n 4y e i tBl Our - ' ' School Industrial Arts Clark Field House WW Our Memories Soft, thuddmq teet are slowly keeping time to the strains of our school song as we march along, together for the last time, on ihis our graduotion day. Just three years nqo, these same feet were timidly entering Ihe corridors of Burlington High School. Our steps became more confident and self-assured alter we had elected our first student council representatives, for this gave us a new feeling of belonging at the school Our junior high days seemed even niore distant by the time we had experi- enced our first high school Homecoming As the weeks and months passed, we became more involved m the regular school activities There were club initiations, formals and plays m which many of us partici- pated In the spring there were concerts and the tnp to Dubuque for the annual music festival thrilled many of uc Climaxing our Sophomore year was the Ten Honor Point P.cinquet A big event of our junior year was our class party, the first one planned by our own class officers Then came our class play. ' ' -g O ' My Heart , well-iemembered by all of us We finished the year with the usual flurry of concerts, formals, and ban- quets Our Senior year, marked by such happenings as our class party, the winning of the Little Six Championship in football and our close play, passed all too quickly On of our classmates distinguished himself by writing the words to a school alma mater :5ong. The Senior banquet and Baccalaureate services highlighted our last week of r.chool How, at graduation time, we must ossume new burdens and turn our steps from our well worn paths to explore new trails. THE EDITOR. We Dedicate Our Book to . Outstanding in music aclivities. she plays first stand cello m the orchestra. On the stu- dent council this year, Louise acted as chairman o[ the assembly commiltee, and as another Senior hon- or, was elected Dolphin Queen. Throughout her years of BHS she has maintained a high scholastic stand- ard. Scribblers and Y-Teens have kept her busy, and yet, with all these responsibilities, Louise finds time (o indulge m tennis or swimming and in playing her large and varied collection ol records Her gay and sweet manner has won her many friends. LOUISE CLARK Active in declam, dramatics, journalism and mu- sic, Wayne Danielson has no lime on h ' s hands . Much of his energy has been put into the field of dra- matics, since he had leads in both Junior and Senior class plays and in several one-act presentations, Danny also won several top rankings in boys ' de- clamation contests. His greatest responsibility was his position as editor-in-chief of the P G and his notable achievement, that of promoting and direct- ing the Eiretat, France Reliel Drive He has been con- sistently at the top of the honor roll Wayne will long be remembered as the author of the words lor our Alma Mater song. i - WAYNE DAfilELGOIJ Many honors have come to Boibara McCollom during her high school years. In her Junior year she was a member of the student council and president and vice-president of the class. Bobs devoted much ol her time to music, being first chair violist and a member oi the girls ' sextet during her second year As a Senior she was secretary of the student council, class treasurer, associate managing editor ol the P G. ond — biggest thrill of all — attendant to the 1948 Home- coming Queen Her first toste o[ dramatics came this May with a part in The Seven Sisters . Sports has been one of Al ' s main interests in high school He received several ma)or letters ior his work in basketball, (ootball and track during his Junior and Senior years Basketball, how- ever, was also an activity for htm as a Sophomore The selection of Al for All-Conference football, first team, gave him recognition for his fine work in that sport. He worked in the cafeteria this year and in- variably greeted all with a friendly smile His happy- go-lucky nature has made him a favorite A ALBERT MOt GAN Blond Evangeime Swanson has had a series ot lun and thrills in BHS Several honors came her way as a Sophomore which is very unusual. She was chosen to reign as queen over the annua ' class party and also during that year was a member ol the stu- dent council Vange served as Junior treasurer and secretary for the first and second semesters respec- tively. Undoubtedly her crowning glory came with her selection as the 1948 Homecoming Queen, the dream of every Senior girl A member of both GAA and Y-Teens, she was always busy Her personality and cute gnn will be remembered by all of us A VANGE SWANSON One ot the most active boys in high school has been Richard Nelson A member of the varsity de- bale squad, Dick won the degree of distinction giv- en by NFL As a Sophomore, he was in the boys ' quartet He held several responsible positions dur- ing his second year as president and vice-president of the class and as a member of student council Again in his Senior year Dick was elected class presi- dent. Yes. these are our clubs — Some of Ihe most valuable services and contributions which have been rendered to our school during the year were done so by these clubs. Always hard at work Ihe Scribblers sell at the games, making enough money to purchase something which the school needs Without the valuable assistance of the Hypatias and the Stagecraft there could never have been so many play productions The Hypatias also assisted the well-known CDC ' s in making the Homecoming a most successful one this year The Sophs have the Alphas and Philos to thank for their grand party, The Shamrock Swing this year The Trigons were seen ushering at all of the games, plays and con- certs. Certainly the Y-Teens drive for Etretat was ol a great deal oi value, while the Hi-Y Community Chest wo;; a complete success We need no explanation of clubs such as Firesquad, Radio, Pro)ection. Art for we all realize how essential they are to the school The GAA ' s were striving the whole year making their club more interesting and en- tertaining to these girls interested in spoit- The members of these clubs should cer- tainly be proud of this year ' s work! Signing up in 19C5. he took on ::ev- eral commercial cou.ses and coached the extemporaneous spea- kers. Really putting himself behind contents he turned out several state champions in typing, sho.thaad and speaking. Then came the big blowup and Mr Slonehocker made a trip up to Camp Dodge to lulHUl an appointment made by the local fate sealers. They sent him to air corps OCS (met his first snag there by wanting to blow his nose during drill) and gave him an intelligence job with a lighter squadron. He spent nearly three years in the Pacific, a few months in Washington with the Department of Labor and then back to Burlington, His job back here had and still has plenty of headaches The junior college broke all enrollment records. )ust about tripling the normal paper work required under normal circumstances Then pile all the VA work on top of that and you have one big job. People run short on hours, records are misplaced, students want to know why about everything, teachers have special requests and they all end up on the dean ' s desk for final action. In spite of all this he takes an hour off three times a week to leach college psychology A busy schedule that would run most people into a rather ragged condition But if a student is in a jam or needs some advice the dean is always willing to drop the )ob at hand and take over someone else ' s headaches He manages to maintain a close working relationship with all his students and keeps their interests in his mmd Very few students have ever been told to come back later because the front office was too busy to fool around A fulltime backer oi education, Mr Stonehocker has managed to work a lot of schooling in on his own record. He took his iiist two de- grees from Coe and Iowa and has since put m plenty of summertime work at the Universities of Chicago, Colorado, Southern Cal and two more summers of grad study at Iowa U His )ob as a Dean of the Junior college puts him right m touch with the J C. situation and he is firmly convinced that this type of training is excellent training either as terminal education or as a preliminary lor senior campus work. They say that the junior college will drop by the roaj v hen the vets pull out but D Doyle Stonehocker is intending to pull a tew sur- prises out of education ' s hat when things get to looking bad Sophomores ANDERSON.
