SE IOR CLASS ' . 1 - The class of nineteen hundred and forty- l'li.XRI.. lilflyxli. VINXRK. lll'X'I'lNli'I'lDX 441459 one has been an unusual class. Yet, since the time of its induction in Burlington High School six years ago, our environment-this world-has been unusual. For six long years the world has been on the brink of a crisis. For six short years our class has been on the brink of Cl different crisis--would that criti- cal day in june ever arrive? Now it is here. Are we ready to take our place in this world? Despite the graxe situation that confronts us, we know that the world is a generous adversary. Sooner or later it yields its prizes of independence and honor to those who merit them. There are those today who are directly responsible for the dark conditions that we face, men unsuited to hold those ranks of authority. IOR CLASS a citizen. Our education and opportunities give us unusual influence in the community. XVe cannot escape the responsibilities of citizenship, and we will accept these with the realization that the years in high school have given us sufficient preparation to enable us to do so. XVe have learned through our experience and observation that the only real and lasting enjoyment in life is to be found in work. Everything which we create decays when neglected, but nothing in the world goes to pieces as fast as a man in idleness. The con- ditions of real development in health. happi- ness, and mental, moral, and physical vigor are found only in the full exercise of all our powers to the limit of their capacity. This class is like the locomotive always running on the upgrade. Ambition is the engineer: Hope. the fireman: and the sta- tions where it stops to take on fuel are Athletics, Band, THE REGISTER, Operetta, the Senior Play, and many others. Our school provides us with these stations. It also has given us room in which to study, games that have taught us real sportsman- ship, libraries for research, and instructive courses that provide us with the best of preparation in countless fields. Those are the essential reasons why we feel that we are ready to step out into the world. W'e should feel proud of a country and this city which have given us a school of such high standards and character. Far- sighted energy and enterprise have made Bur- lington High School reach FAR in scholastic accomplishment. XY'hether we succeed or fail, the friendly associations. many of which will be ended this year, give us one asset upon which no sheriff can levy. and one which no fortune could tempt us to part with. .45-3
