Yt., on the seventh day of October, 1841. His parents were the Rev. Orville G. and Aurelia San- ford Wheeler, whose ancestors were soldiers in the Revolutionary XVar. The first years of his life were passed mainly in the town of South Hero, Yt., where his father was for fifty years the pastor of the Congregation-al Church. Here Mr. Wheeler received his first education, in the common schools and in South Hero Academy, of which his father was principal for many years. From this academy he graduated in 1860, in a class composed of seven boys. live of whom, with Mr. Wheeler, entered Ithe University of Yermont in the class of 1864. Among the members of this class were Dr. Edward S. Peck: Oscar Atwood. President of Straight University, New Orleans: Dr. Sullivan F. Gale, Superintendent of Home Missions in tl1e State of Georgia: Dr. F. W'. Page, a former Superintendent of the Vermont State Asylum for the Insane: the Hon. Julian Phelps, once U. S. consul in Germany, and others, all well remembered in Burlington. Wheni, in 18611, the call came for volunteers to serve in the Union Army, a large number of students left the University. Among these was Mr, Wheeler, with six of his old academy classmates. Mr. Wheeler cast his lot with Company A. First Vermont Cavalry. He served as private, corporal, sergeant, first lieu- tenant, and was finally made a brevet captain for meritorious conduct. During his three years' service he took part in nearly all the battles in which the Ver- mont Cavalry were engaged, including Opequan, Hagarstown, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. During the opening day of the Wilderness campaign, May 5, '64, he was seriously wounded and in October of the same year was captured at Mount Jackson, Va., and confined in the famous Libby prison for several months. In the spring of the following year he was mustered out of service, his term of enlistment having expired during his prison confinement. Captain Wheeler returned to the University of Vermont, entering the sopho- more class, and graduated in 1867, gaining membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society. The mere mention of that name re- calls to our memory such a variety of scenes and incidents that we are at a loss to know which are t-he most deserving of mention. In the past three years we have distinguished ourselves not only in the classroom, but on the field of sports. and have participated in all social gatherings with our usual spirit. From the day when we first entered the halls of Old Edmunds and encoun- tered the patronizing and somewhat condescending glances of the upperclassmen. we determined to make a name for ourselves. It is not for us to say how well we have accomplished our object. U The fighting qualities of a part of our class were shown one dark night. when a number of the boys were attacked by a superior force of sophomores. and, though we will not state the result. it has been a noticeable fact that our rights have never again. been called into question. Our first class sociable! What an hilarious evening that was! The mas- culine members of the class were with difficulty enticed within the doors of the assembly hall, where they at last deigned to join in the intricate mazes of drop the handkerchief. Our sophomore year was even more noteworthy than our first year. Sev- eral new elements entered into the life of the class at the beginning of this period. VVe first made the acquaintance of M. Fichot,-and what one of us will ever forget our struggles with qu'est-ce-que c'est ? It was during this year, also, that we first ventured into the realms of circles and triangles. from which we emerged. eareworn but victorious, with a greater sense of our responsibilities t-han ever. One of the most enjoyable events of this year was the class sociable, which was a decided improvement on our first attempt. Our already high opinion of Mr. Donahue was raised that evening by the way in which he directed hot coffee. It was about this time, too, that Peck and Wheeler developed their remarkable propensities for mischief, and they furnished a continual fund of entertainment in room nine. 38 'l'his year tinds us dignified and studious juniors. The manner in which we conducted ourselves at lllontpelier is a noticeable illustration of this fact. Most of our class, especially the students of Civil Government, were so anxious to learn the methods of the Legislature, that even the attractions of the football game, to say nothing of the charms of the city itself. could hardly allure them from the State House. The fall term is a long one and it is no wonder that a few of our members became tired of the steady routine of school life and decided to take a short vaca- tion toward the last of the term. Some of them have even been thinking seri- ously of doing' so again. Not being satisfied with the ordinary plan of a class sociable, this year we determined to outdo all our former efforts and to make our class gathering one of especial pleasure. ,lt is hardly necessary to say that we all enjoyed the ex- cellent supper the connnittee prepared for us, together with the speeches by our President, llliss Moore, and Mr. Donahue. 'l'ime runs on apace and nearly three years of our lliggh School career are finished. We have been well represented on all the athletic teams, the names of some of us have appeared on the Editorial lloard of The Registerng those musically inclined have lent their talents to the lllusical Clubs: while the dramatic ability of a few of our classmates was shown this year in the presentation of the comedy-drama, 'HX Scrap of l'aper. .llesides the learning we have acquired from books, we have formed many friendships during' our stay together in old ll. ll. S.. which will intluence our lives long after our knowledge of algebra and Latin have become obscure in our memory. These friendships will become more precious as the years go on. and we may well say, with Dr. Holmes :-- 'l'li'a11lcs to the gracious powers above, from all mankind that singled us, And dropped the pearl of friendship in the eup they kindly mingled us, And bound us in a, wreath of flowers with hoops of steel knit, under ity- Nor time, nor space, nor ehanee, nor change, nor Death himself shall sunder it. To write the history of the Class of 1907! Really, if we ever made something out of nothing by means of our pen, we must do so now. For, after much deliberation, we have come to the discourag- ing conclusion that to write anything like a history of the class in question would be next to impossible. For stirring events, favorable or otherwise, are neces- sary to make a history, and, unfortunately, the career of the Class of 1907, up to this time, has been unusually quiet and undisturbed. ln your first year, 1907, the mere mention of a trial at arms with the class above you turned you pale-a weakness which has followed you through your second year. In fact, it is due to your inactivity in this direction that class scraps in the school are a thing of the past. For doing away with them you may be praised or censured, in our opinion, with equal justice. At any rate. the school world will never know what you could have done when brought to a crisis in a hard fisting match with your rival class. As you have deprived yourself of the fun of class fighting, so have the School lloard deprived you of the pleasures the lower classes have hitherto de- rived from their class sociables. Thus far you have not been allowed to hold a class sociable. VVhether those who have restricted you in this way think you too young to successfully manage such an affair, or whether too much school sociable dissipation on the part of the class directly above you has made it seem best for you to go without your sociables for awhile, wfe do not know. lint we sympathize with you, and if, when you become seniors, you show any inertia in the doing of the many duties, outside of your studies, which will then fall upon you, we would excuse it to some extent, considering that for two years you were deprived of your sociables, which are the only means yet discovered in our school by which a class is given confidence in itself and its own powers, and by which the members of the class are mingled together and given that feeling of social good-will without which no class, as a class. gains much more than the reputation of being a set of grinds. 44 lint after all, still waters run fleepfl you know, and that you have not disturbed the peace of your sehool by riots and scraps, and the peace of your parents hy dancing, at least once a year, in the assembly hall until the scandal- ously late hour of ten-thirty, does not mean that you are in any way weak- minded. Un the contrary, if we read you aright, you are merely biding your time until you become seniors or juniors, when ample opportunity will be given you to prove your true worth. Meanwhile you are quietly nourishing in your midst several fondlings whose mere names, in the distant future fshould we say far distant?l will totter this old world to its depths. You have a Lyman, patiently awaiting the time when he shall he King Coal of the earthy a Dodds, who bids fair to rival Professor l'etts as a dancing masterg a Howtes, to becomie a full-blooded Greek: a Lessor and a Tuttle, both to till Sousa's shoes: a Ferguson, who is to have his per- petual grin preserved in Consumer's lee Company's ice and make his fortune by selling it in chunks to all the leading Sunxday papers, for use in their weekly l,ulu-Hooligan-lluster-Butt-in-0-How-Foolish insults to good taste: and last, but not by any means least fin his own estimationl you have as a daily com- panions a Clapp, who is destined-but since he himself has not wasted any thought on his future. it would be presuming for us to foretell it here. llut we cannot trust our pen any further in this catalogue of future great- ness. The mere mention of such noble personages moves us to the heartis core. XN'hat Il- Did you speak? Did we hear you ask whether the Class of 1907 is all boys? llless you, no! The largest and best part of the class is girls. Nllhy, even the boys themselves run to girls! And such girls! There is Miss - lint we haven't the space to name all the girls worthy of mention. lf we did we would have to name all the girls in the class. For they are all, as lloag would say, 'feorkersf' lint our pen demands a relief from this sort of work. So we will close, advising the reader, for a complete -history of the deeds of this most illustrious elass, to read the Senior Editorial in Tllli Omiap for IQO7. 45 Sophomore Diroctorv Oiliccrs Gaonm: THOMAS . . . ....... . . .President Miss HAZEI. A few svenes from As Yon Like lt, the whole of She Stoops to Conquer, and other plays were read at these ineet- ings, whith were generally followed by an informal sing in the assembly hall. These meetings 1-nltninated in the presentation on Marr-h the tenth ot' the tlirev- uc-I t'0Illt'tly-tll'Z'lIllZl. On a pleasant afternoon of the second week in November, the Club boarded the afternoon train bound for Cambridge. .lust as the train is starting, the figures of Mower and Prime are seen strolling leisurely down the line. The train is stopped and waits for these two to get aboard. Mowers benign countenance shows no mark of surprise, but wears its usual platonic expression. A large majority of the musical tribe install themselves in the smoker. Smoke- stack Riley passes around the cheroots. As they approach the other end of the car, at groan of delight is heard t'ron1 the reclining figure of St-rouge, Speed declines with one of his impressive smiles, as do Allen, Gebhardt and Deacon Rose: the rest enjoy a good smoke. Soon the voices of Mower, Fuller, Prime and llcssor are heard, as they gather about two intoxicated men, who are telling wild stories of their child- hood. Through the smoke at the other end of the car are seen the figures of t'onr boys playing cardsstlates, Soule, Wheeler and Rose. The game is highly exciting and the air is blue with something besides smoke. The train moves along slowly and with dignity. The t'ellows need a little something to wake them up, so they indulge in a song entitled Hay Mow, led by the excellent tenor voice of Speed Fuller. Two verses are sung. when, with a whistle and jerk. the train arrives at Essex Junction and the song is postponed. l.essor jumps off and runs ahead ot' the train to see if there are any cows on the track. He is picked up an hour later, having forgotten about the speed of the train and ran ahead too t'ast a11d far. After about three hours' ride the train comes to a stop. Thinking that it must be tlambridgc, all grab their potato bugs ami banjos and prepare to pile off: but seeing nothing but a t'arm house and a barren wilderness. Allen, the only cool headed man in the crowd, seeks the conductor for info1'1nation, who politely informs him that the train is making one of its regular stops tnot scheduled, to save expensei to carry a can of milk and a dozen eggs to the next t'arm house. Thus squelched, all retire into the train, where they give forth a delightful melody in the form of the third verse of llay Mow. Receiving an encore from the entlnlsiastic occupants of the car, they are compelled to give their grand lihubarb selection. Thus passing the time, with a short intermission when the Bills, Rose and lrime, attempt to free the train boy from a portion of his burden. In the course of a t'ew more hours, the bunch tall awake with the exception of Gates! arrive at the city ot' Cam- bridge, where they are met. by the prosperous looking hotel proprietor, a lantern, and a small black dog with a little curly black tail. This trio leads them through the busy streets and avenues of the fair city of Cambridge, past. rr store. ri brwbev' shop, a 'meat nlurlfct and finally between the very portals of the American hotel itself. When all had arrived and given vent, to their hungry feelings by lusty shouts, Wheeler suddenly discovers that three of his tribe, Soule, Gebhardt ami Gates, are cither lost or stolen. He immediately sends the whole crowd to look for them, offering a reward of three cents for their capture. Thus induced, the boys, actompanied by the little black dog with the curly tail, brave the brilliant lights of Cambridge and search for their lost brothers. Naturally, Speed. being the longest ot' limb, returns first, in an exhausted condition: and in an excited state ot' mind he recounts how he had come across the lost ones, their noses stuck to the plate glass windows of the store, eagerly debating whether or not they should invest. in an elegant necktie which was being offered at the extremely low price ot' nineteen cents, Gebhardt and Soule were in favor of jumping at such a bargain, but Gates said no, that he had seen a. tie, which was just as good, hanging in the window of the Red -tti not over a year ago, for only seventeen eents. How- ever, they are finally induced by a t'ew of the more hungry members to put. off the matter until the following morning and all march off to supper t?i While a few are preparing for the dining 1'oom, Gates and Gebhardt, their thoughts still on that tie, display excellent talent in decorating the register book so 97 1 that all the citizens of Cambridge might know that the B. H. S. Banjo and Mandolin Club had stopped there and thus honored their city. At length a faint tinkle announces that grub is ready, and a mighty roar of welcome announces that every one is ready for grub. The members of the club all have different opinions concerning that supper, varying according to the size of their appetites, but all agree that it was good-what there was of it. After their hearty meal, the crowd take a stroll, to get a closer view of the buildings, and some one discovers a post office in a corner of the store. At length it is time for the concert. At 7.15 the manager takes his stand at the box office. Soon three men appear, then an old lady and two children. A rest of half an hour ensues before tl1e next victim arrives, and finally the boys secure ten people by passing out complimentary tickets. The crucial moment having arrived, the curtain is raised to the tune of America, The scenery of the stage is a little peculiar, a scene in the woods and one in a drawing room showing at the same time, owing to some mistake of Stage Manager Gebhardt. llowcver, all goes off well until Gebhardt lets the curtain tdiameter of log, ten inchesj, down on Gates' head, and .lohn's tongue becomes loose at such treatment. The second part of the programme goes off all right, until the last piece, when tl1e manager appears on the stage and announces that, This piece will conclude the piece and the next piece will be a dance. The applause which follows this speech is the principal feature of the evening. Soon the dance is under way, the music being furnished by two of the club. Four couples finally decide to dance, most of them well into the middle ages. They request a five-step, which is played, and at its close they accuse Allen and Soule of playing a waltz for a five-step. Finally, John gets his eyes on one of the youngest looking of the fair sex present, braces up to her, and they cut. a few figures on the floor together. Allen and Speed finally screw up courage to approach two others and soon make things lively. At'ter the dance Allen and Speed proceed to nab the only two females that didn't live near by-and were not seen again until two A. M. The manager then withdraws to settle 11p his accounts and has so much money to look after that he finally calls in Gebhardt to help him, and they finally get it counted. After two hours they announce the amount to be 52.50. The manager then procures a shot-gun, and he and Gebhardt take turns guarding the hoard until the small hours of the morning, when all are asleep or, at least, quiet. Unknown to the two guards a mouse got into the sack of ten dollar bills, while they were both dozing, and the shotgun is discharged immediately upon hearing the suspicious scratching among the bills. The noise brings out the whole bunch, thronging the hall in their night shirts. The card playing and general uproar goes 011 steadily, with the exception of about at dozen interruptions and threats from the proprietor, until about three A. M. At this hour all were in bed with the exception of Prime, Mower and Gates, who dirln't go to sleep at all and continued their musical selections until breakfast. All goes well until Allen and Soule, feeling rather lonely in their great, big t?J bed-room, go in search of some of their brethren, but, unfortunately, make a mistake and enter a room occupied by two bald headed travelling men-with the result that they got out P, D. Q. A little later Mower's little t?J feet patter down the hall and enter the money room without being shot by Gebhardt or Wheeler, both being awake at the time. He holds a whispered conversation with them, and soon three pairs of feet are heard pattering down the hall. The boys procure a glass of cool water and, at a given signal, it is all thrown through the transom onto the sleeping forms of Tuttle and l.essor, who immediately send forth a blood-curdling yell which reaches the ears of the proprietor down stairs. At once a fourth pair of feet are heard pattering t?J up the stairs and down the hall. Upon hearing this unwelcome warning three pairs of feet disappear. 98 Now 'FII1 111111 1.11ss111' 111'11 11111 11111111111111: 10 1111 1111111111112 0115121151111 1111' 111'0111'1111111's w1'11111y 1'0111c1 lblll' 111111 111' 01111 111' 1111111' 11l'1'1111'1'11. 11111y svixv 21 11ll'1I1' 11111'11111' 01' w111111 1L1111 1101111 11 11111 01' 11111 11'1111s0111 111111 1111111 11111 111'11111'i111111', 1111111 1,1111 1'1'S1111 111111 11111111 was 11. 11'111 111'0110s1111111 HI'0lll111 111111'1- 11111 5011111 1111111.
