VVell, I'll tell you about my experience just like I told Judge Wall. judge VVall, I says, 'LI couldn't help what I did to that patient of mine. I don't care what you say, judge, I couldn't help it. Why, all at once, on ,Iunember 33, 1953, she started having terrible pains. I just couldnlt imagine what was hap- pening. That is until Doctor Manley Campbell finally examined her. I guess the reason was because ofthe morning be- fore. What happened to me? Hell, that morning, ,Iunember 32 it was, I got up early so I would be sure to be the very first one at that sale at VI'addell's Dept. Store. Where is II'addell's? VVhy, your Honor, you know right across from It Pays To Be Ignorant Library. Gosh, that reminds me. Ilve got to pay my book I-ine. Ida Mae Norris has sent me three cards already. Good book though4 I'hat Algebrais Got Me' by Pat Decker. Oh well, Illl drop by tomorrow. Why, your excellency, l'm not off the subject. It,s like I said. Waddellls is across from the It Pays To Be lgnorant Library and who should beat me to that sale but Bobbie Batchelor. Finally, the manager, Raymond Petrea, opened the door. Mercy mc, what a bevy of people, there was Margaret Allen, Roberta Grigg, Ann Blackwell, Muriel Hines, Ifar- lene Brown, Dorothy Huff, Virginia Carter, Betty Leach, Ruth Wheeler, Katherine Hoyle, Margaret Moser and lirnes- tine Mansheld and last but not least Illeanor Martens. Well, I was finally in the door and making very little progress. I took the path ofleast resistance and paused a while to take a full advantage ofthe colorful mob before me. On my right was a diaper sale and in the midst of it all stood jo Craft Stafford, Annie Dare Foster, jo McIntyre Barett, and Faye Kivctt Bowen with their bevy of 'jacks In jill's 'n joes 'n Bills.' Then on my left just beyond the dry goods table upon which were perched: Alyce Creech, Martha May, Haze- Bryan, Hilda Temple, Pat Horne, Jessie Mae Terry, Virginia Latta, and Betty Rae Rudder carrying on a long-winded conl versation, there was an 'livening in Petersburg' perfume sale. Peggie Vikmodburn, Doris Blalock, Peggy Fogleman, Willie Faye Christropher, jean Hamilton, Betty jones, and Billie Stuckey were stacking up the stuff. just beyond was the men's department where I decided I would purchase my Sweetie-Pie a surprise. Realizing a red pair of dotted swiss Suspenders would be just the thing, I stepped aside to regard Howard Fogleman, Bill Gross, Harry james, Carlton Mangum, Gordon Farmer, and Jimmy Whitsell busily attending to the job of clerk. As I timidly stepped from the store to the street, I ran slam-bam into Bob Baxter and Chester Baker who are still caddying for Nancy Cook and Lacala Wilkins at the Golf Links. 'KI-Ioping at least to make it to the next stoplight, I was however stopped by, yes, judge, yes, it certainly was Bill Small, Gerald Pickler, Bob Stutts, Bobby Curl, Bud Pickard, Ed Ballard, Hal johnson, Bill Barger, Carson Leach, Vernon Maness, David Wilson, and Earl Wrightenberry taking their morning exercise with a mild run from Carolina to Burlington and bringing up the rear were Nancy Huffman, Bootsy Stafford, Camilla Spikes, and Deloris Willis cheering them on! I was really tired, Judge, so I decided the best thing to do was to go into Tutterow's Drug Store to get a 'pause that refreshesf Millard Denson, Don McPherson, Deward Baldwin, Wade Dodson, Fred Harvey, john Frank Nicholson, 36 I. re.. ia. L. at so - and jerry Splawn were 'jerks'-soda jerks, that is!! In the booth beside me were Clara Yarborough, Emma Lee Nichols, Carnell Vleadon, Annie Laura Talley, Cornelia McDaniels, Eleanor Peele, Fetner Parrish, and Helen Steel. Hjust as I had really begun to compose myseli there was a horrible noise. I ran to the street where james Cooper, johnnic Mae Fvans, George Houston, Marie Hawkins, john Campbell, jean Boswell, Whitley Arwood, Pauline McKin- ney, Louise Yarbrough and james Trollinger were standing in a huddle, and who do you think was lying on the pavement, your honor, yes sir, Bill VVilliHmrd. Seems Roy Clark had ignored a stoplight and you know Roy. 'Keep-at-Em' Clark had ignored Bill, too! As l stepped aside to let the ambulance attendants through, I noticed that they were Victor King and Bobby Powell and Coleen Crenshaw and Annie Lemons, who came along for the ride. 'llfully fatiqued I decided to take in a movie, so I went to see 'l'he Show Ain't No Good But The Star is Terrific' starring Katherine Fesperman and Leo Boliek. Taking up tickets was Eleanor Ball, and the ushers were W A. Neesc, Harold King, William DeVVeese, Donald Brooks, and Hurley Hinshaw. It was really a boring picture but I saw loads of my old pals: Catherine Coble and lalarl Massey, Betty Poteat, Daphine Durham, and jeanne Cash, Faye Anderson, Peggy Harris, and Betty Harden, and jane Slate and Murphy Alexander. Wlihe newsreel was fairly interesting though. Seems that Louisa May has been elected Miss America with Marie Knight, Virginia Coble, Peggy Wicker, and Carolyn Moore as attendants. Birdeye Black, Floyd Foster, jimmy Moore, jack Troutman, Thomas Kinney, Norman Burke and Al Cheek were judges. Interesting work! HBetty VViles, jean Miller, Sharon Black, and Martha Burch are appearing in the opera LCarwomen' with Blake An- thony leading the orchestra, which is composed of Rufus Apple on the tuba, and the violin section consisting of Harris Andrews, Richard Ifvans, Herman Coley, jack Gwyn, Carroll Neese, and j. P. King. The brass section includes Hubert Lee, Don Paul, Lloyd Lewis, Gene Thomas, Elwood Lcwey, Othal Phillips, and Thomas Nash. lt was pouring in torrents when I left the movies, and as I hailed a taxi, I saw Trew Gurley and Allen Morrison prod- ding along in their best Sunday suits. uSince I was to go on duty at three o'cloek, I went straight to Painfeel Memorial Hospital where I met Bettie Vllard Nancy Martin, Gladys Copeland, Lorene Turner, Mary jean Teer, Iris Stanfield, Carolyn Fonville, and Catherine Carden scurrying around like 'Angels of Mercy., g'Gosh, judge Ykhll, canlt we step this thing up? Look at that jury. They look bored to death, and Virginia Beck is waiting to go shopping with me, VVhy, I know those people in the jury: Marion Andrews, Roy Dameron, Gladys Coble, Iidith Holt. Gilbert Fuquay, Banks Gross, Mary Kelley, Glenn Bolick, Harold Cheek, Hazel Barker, Lindsay Blanchard, and Beverly Hargrove. And look at those spectators out there. They have to go home, too. VVhy, therels Lois Boles, Betty jo Hiatt, Nellie Lowe, Nancy Miles, Becky Neely, Violet Rhew, Ernestine Vkalkins, Marcelle Toney, Hilda Stan- lield, Gertrude Roach, Betty jean Neesc, liula jean VValker, and jeanette Nicholson.
