Then comes homeroom period which IS comparatively dull as I have nothing to do except take the bobby pins out of my hair put on hpstxck go to the student store report to the office to see lf my last weeks tardy was excused make a poster on the chief rallroads of the south and help Barbara Mangum memorlze her French vocabulary I do all thls to the extreme horror of Barbara White who mcldentally reacts to the bell as a hunter reacts to fresh tlger tracks That IS upon hearlng the thrilling news that It IS ten minutes txll the bell rings she dashes to her desk closes her books packs them in a neat pile nd starts making plans as to what would be the best way to go to get out of the door Then she sits and tenslng her feet for the spring out of her desk fshe has to spring for with all the books she carries shed never get to her feet otherwise! waits for that sweet muslc to chlme in her ears But when the bell rang today I was readv by some mlracle and Sara Lee Barker and I proceeded down the hall to gether tThat IS every now and then Id see her head bobblng up in front of me somewhere l You see every time I deude to change classes the rest of the school does too for some strange reason and therefore the halls are a l1ttle crowded A little crowded' Thats a scream' Between classes those halls are so crowded that unless you happen to have a PGFISCODE handy or are 9 6 you have no earthly ldea where you are going But the tlde and Jean Klrkman swept me along and I managed to catch up with Sara Lee without any other mlshap than having my new fountaln pen trampled upon and mashed flatter than my latest algebra grade Gee she murmured chewing thoughtfully her bubble gum I crammed so hard fcr that test last night that I think something IS going to pop And those were the truest words that she ever uttered for Just at that moment my llttle blue. compact that I ve cherished and loved and crammed full of Junk decided that enough was enough and practically leapmg out of my pocket hurled ltself dovxn two flights of steel covered steps W1th all the gracefulness of 1 1923 steam roller I shox ed my beloved books fthats a Joke sonl in a corner and chased spirltedly after my fast dtsappearmg powder puff In the meantime some thoughtful soul Tommy Green namely knocked the rest of my books ' n u se grisly steel covered steps and everyone started stand mg around to see what was going to happen n t I to a them what had happened and they in turn told the ones behind them and everybody stood arou a at each other and giving me advice but not one kmdly person offered to help untll some little 5 1 cha e i ed forward and with a sweeping bow began to help a malden ln dlstress by collectmg my history paper 1 ere all xn one pile and certainly not much trouble but with a herolc smlle on his face he held forth a r dness and general good sense all the while he was pxckmg them .xp i I didnt know whet er to han e hlm a txp but I finally discarded the latter idea and murmured MCFCI lots and lo hubl tha uldnt understand thc Engllsh 1f he under forced to put myself in reverse and leap h X s of steel coxered steps and into my chem lstry room vthere I was greeted by the rema uf7 . er tents which nearly knocked me down those darn steps again' fl dont mean to be telhn u b y u ust ad mt lt was horr1b1e'l Goodness only knows how I managed to ha perl but I did and the first thmg I knew there It was time to change classes agaxn S I gra o d ' m book and the remains of my battered compact and headed for the door and my next class which lncldentally was Engllsh Here I was practlcally bowled over by Shirley Baker who rushed out and mformed me that she had it on strictest confidence from someone who had met someone who knew someone m the thlrd perxod class that we were g01ng to have a test and did I know who vxrote H G Wells Outlzne of History? I replied that I thought it was H G Wells and collected my scattered nerves and books and went 1n the classroom Well of course we had a test and of course I forgot who wrote H G Wells Outlmc of Htstory but the next perlod was lunch and 1 figured that nothing mattered except gettmg some Iood to my poor stomach which had been exlstlng on a battered piece of Julcy Frult s1nce elght oclock this mornlng After lunch twhlch mcldentally wasnt half as good as my Julcy Fruity I went to Dramatic Club where Tommy Deloache was beating his brams 191 out 1n an effort to look Shakespearean and Roger Fogleman was muttering Ah Romeo Romeo' Wherefore art thou Romeo' to Sara Garrett when Graham White stuck his head in the door and rudely apprehended Heah ah is chile Ah well tlme passes and so do the people who study now wnere was IP Oh yes I was on my way to sixth period As 1 stood there ln the hall gathermg my thoughts and pieces of compact whlch had dropped again who should I see commg down the hall but Send em Stutts and Beau Balt Ballard' I was so embarrassed to be caught wlth mv nose shmmg that I backed oft into the first room handy and crouched behlnd the door Naturallv I happened to chose the teachers room and whom should I bump 1nto but Mr Rxden hour commg out wlth my history paper under hlS arm' I made a hasty retreat walklng all over Marlon Tlckle on the way and beat 1t over to sixth period room where I sank into the damtlly autographed desk that mformed me that Kllroy had been here and settled down to hear Dolly Ree and Miss Wiseman discuss the pros and cons of resonance mow what in the heck does that mean'Pl Well the last bell rang and so did my head wlth all those ahs and ohs that wed been singing for the previous fifteen minutes but I staggered out tlred but happy' For after all todav was Tuesday and I had four more blissful days to look forward to before Friday came and they made me leave for the week end Whom am I kidding' ANN STAFFORD 82 A ' ' ' '. , .a ' .A ' ' .Il.S. ..
