X-x fl Toasf fo ffze Scfzool The sweetest memories in the life of the average person are the memories of high school days. Our intimate associations and comradeships bring us into a closer alliance with each other. XVe have a better understanding of the trials and hardships that eaeh student undergoes during his high school career, which naturally leads to mutual friendships. 'lfhere is a tie which binds us to each other that we cannot understand. There is a feeling in our hearts toward one another that cannot be explained. We through cooperation and mutual responsibility, have learned to love one another, and though we live to a ripe old age, even three-score years and ten we shall not forget our associations and comradeships in dear old B. H. S. To our instructors, we wish to pay our tribute. W'hether we leave these walls for higher institutions of learning, or for simple home duties, or for the business world, we shall go with a spirit that will never die and which will never let us forget our dear .-Xlma Mater. lVe shall forever cherish her dear name. XVhy should we wait until we have gone out from these halls, some of us probably never to return, to pay our tributes to those who have taught us, and whom we love so well? XVhy not throw our bouquets now? Vlfe pledge to thee, O Spirit strong, That through the years hast led Our feet thy paths of truth along And hope with virtue fed. lflast shown new beauties in the scope Of dnty's toiling way: Xlfe pledge to thee, our life, our hope In this glad hour to-day. lts banner fair our cleathless aim, Wie shall not fail to pay. X-.e X Sefzior Clays ffzlvtofly September l0, 19.25, a call was issued for recruits to train for the First Crusade, to conquer High School. A large number responded to the call and Regiment '29 was organized. The following ollieers were elected: Carlos Pennington, Colonelg john NVhitley, Lieutenant-Colonel1 and I-Ielen Fowler, Regimental Sergeant Major. The Generals, Miss Webster, Miss I-lolton and Mr. MeBane, saw that the training of the raw Recruits was properly carried on. The Recruits were trained in knowledge and athletics. ln the struggle with Latin, Science, Algebra, Civics, and English many were victoriousg others, unable to stand the strain, left the training field. At the end of nine months drilling the Recruits were given a furlough of three months, Nearly all the recruits returned after their furlough and started their second Cru- sade. They were promoted to the rank of Private. Miss McQuarie, Miss Carroll, and Miss Shepard were the Generals this year. The officers elected by the Privates were: John W'hitley, Colonel: Frank Holt, Lieutenant-Colonelg Harold Trollinger, Major. Under the eliicient leadership of these omcers and the guidance of their able Generals, the Privates were able to accomplish much, They took an active part in athletics, some winning varsity letters. They ran a close race in the Inter-Class Athletic Contest, After the second nine months training in scholarship, club work, and athletics the Privates were again granted a furlough of three months. At the opening of school September 4, 1927, the Privates returned and were given the rating of Corporal. This time the Regiment determined to accomplish more than ever. The Generals were Miss Shepard, Miss Kernodle, and Mr, Rhodes. Under its efficient olheers, Allen Mebane, Carlos Pennington, Edwina Laws, and Sam Wlarlick, the Regiment progressed rapidly in athletics, scholarship, and club work. To raise money for the ,lunior4Senior Banquet, the Corporals gave the Junior Party on Hal- lowe'en Night. On this occasion the hardships of educational discipline were forgotteng an evening of fun and inerriment was enjoyed by the Army of B. H. S.: and the neces- sary funds for the coming banquet were secured. An outstanding achievement of Regiment '29 was the junior-Senior Banquet held at Fisher Street School, The Corporals entertained their superiors royally. Many members of the Regiment participated in athletics. Some received varsity letters, while others made varsity squads. Hy the skill and cooperation of the entire Regiment in the Battle of Athletics the Corporals succeeded in winning the coveted Inter-Class Cup. in June the Corporals ended a successful year. Now that they were well trained Etsy hoped the furlough would soon end for they were anxious to make their fourth rusade. September 4, 14723, the surviving Corporals entered High School for their last time. They were now non-commissioned officers with the rating of Sergeant. As Miss Mor- row was unable to instruct the Sergeants, Miss Wlalters and Mr. Leonard were the Generals. They were not as many Sergeants as there had been recruits. Some had dropped out because they could not endure the hardships, while a few preferred other training and enlisted for service on the Sea of Matrimony. The remaining undaunted Sergeants eagerlv looked forward to victory in many fields. Under the command of its able officers, Allen Mebane, Elizabeth Sellars, Edwina Laws, and Franklin Overman, the Regiment proposed and carried out many projects. It undertook the dillicult problem of publishing a year book called Doa-XVAi-I-JMR, This book was dedicated to Miss Morrow for her faithful services to Regiment '29 in former Crusades and for her untiring service and loyalty to the Army of B. H, S. The Inter-Class Cup is now in possession of the Sergcants and they are looking for- ward to winning the Rattle of Athletes the second time, thereby keeping the trophy. Manv Sergeants have won varsity letters. The Regiment also selected and successfully presented a play called Green Stock' ings. The Sergeants were greatly honored and graciously entertained at an elaborate banquet given them by the Juniors. The success ot' Regiment '20 in the four Crusades to conquer High School has been due largely to the fact that its members have tried to live up to their motto, XVe're not on top, but climbing. After victory' over High School they are looking forward to winning even greater victories on the larger field of Life. Our dear Netta Cook: VVhen Allen Mebane, President of our Class of '29, invited us here for a reunion, our lirst thought was one of joyful anticipationg our second, one of deepest regret that you could not leave your teaching in thc Philippines in order to he with us. Since you cannot hear our good wishes individually, let us say that every member of the Class of '29 wishes you the greatest success and the best o' luck. , It is wonderful here in the hills. Allen's beautiful home and its surroundings present a charm- ing and inspiring scene that all of us will remember for years to come. The large stone house, overlooking the beautiful terraced lawns, lovely gardens, and a blue lake would do your heart good. From where we sit on the shady porch we can see Allen, who has made a lucky break into the lnternational Shoe Co. and is now on the Board of Directors, strolling in the direction of the lake with a certain young larly, whom we recognize as our fashionable society leader, Dorothy Sellars. Hy the way, Pot is taking J. B. Pegram along as secretary. You remember he knows so much about foreign languages. VVe hear a voice behind ns. The conductors of the trip were Miss XYelJster, Miss fllasson, and Mr. Ushorne. lYe selected as Captain, Cliarles Holt: and as his crew, Doro- thy Sellars, Fletcher Moore, and lithel Qualls. XYhile on the first part of our journey some of our meinhers were swept overhoarcl hy the waves of Latin. Algelira, and Science. During this time, too, we were saddened hy the death of one of our heloved passengers, john Hinsdale. Before starting on the second phase of our voyage we anchored for three months in order to rest. On Septemher 7, l927, we resumed our journey guided hy Misses Scar- horough and Carroll. This time we elected Thomas XYhitley as Captain, and lflrinson Rouse, liflna Bryan, and Margaret lloland as his assistants. Sailing proved to he difficult and in spite of mnnerous Detention Room slips the waves of Biology, l.atin, and .-Xlgehra caused some of our passengers to be left hehind. ln -lune we reached port for another three months vacation he- fore starting on the third part of our voyage, and it was during this anchorage that we were deeply grieved hy the death of :Xlvin Cable. French and tleometry made the journey rough and hazardous, hut, heing more accustomed to such disasters, due to our long experience on the Ocean of lligh School. we thought less of our perils and more of amusement. It was dnrine' this period of our journey that we gave two charming enter- tainnients: our llallowe'en Party and the junior-Senior Banquet. At our Halloween l'arty we presented two plays, Red Carnations and XVho VVas Scared, which were pronounced a great success. ln .-Xpril we gave a delight- ful hanquet at Maple .Xvenue School in honor of the Seniors. Thomas XVhit- ley, our distinguished toastntaster on this occasion, directed us through an enjoyalile evening just hefore we again came into port, our last rest before setting out on the final and most interesting part of our voyage across the Ocean of llieli School. l.oUtsi3 l'ltftRNlER, llxoi. 'T 'l7 xx 'rx Zltibs Enezwaiyilatk . .X BW Scout Pafro! Dug In December the question of the school pupils' walking on the railroad tracks was brought before the student body. Interesting talks on the subject were made by several of the pupils and Mr. Halfacre. It was proposed that thc High School pupils refrain from using the tracks as a thoroughfare, not only because of their personal danger, but the example that was placcd before the younger children. One hundred percent of the students voted to use the underpass and not the railway grade crossing. The Boy Scout Club consented to sponsor a movement to take in charge the patrol- ling of the crossing at various places along the track. This movement has in a large respect helped to keep the students off the tracks and avoided possible accidents, Hzfgfz Sofzool Ladies Hosiery af Tea One of the most delightful social events of the season was the informal tea given Friday afternoon at 4:30 by the lady teachers of the high school faculty to the high school girls and their mothers in the high school auditorium. The seats had been removed and the entire hall was gorgeously decorated with floor baskets, vases, and jarclinierres of dogwood and red-bud, with a few potted plants, and vases of wisteria. the entire effect being most spring-like and lovely. Chairs and settees were placed about and the guests lingered and chatted and listened to splendid music rendered the entire time by the high school orchestra, under direction of M. Z. Rhodes. Mrs. C. C. Haworth and Mrs. VV. D. Halfacre sat at al large table and poured tea. Mrs. Bradley had charge of the tea and sandwiches, which were served by the members of the Hostess Club of the high school. The teachers receiving and entertaining the guests, besides those mentioned, were Mrs. Patil jones, and Misses Lolita Cox, Emily Young, Attrice Kernodle, Florence Rutherford, Gertrude Shepard. Annie VVebster, Marie Scllars, and lda Walters. Copied from liiwlingtoii Nectar. Issue of April 9, 1929. Tfze fHllZ.07'-S67lZi07' Banquet It is agreed that the greatest social event of the school year is the banquet given by the juniors in iionor of the Seniors. The Class of '30 certainly maintained this standard, when they entertained on April 12th for the Class of '29 and the members of the faculty. On this occasion the cafeteria of the Maple Avenue School was beautifully decorated in rose and silver, the Senior Class colors. Places were laid for one hundred and seventy guests at the rectangular table which was lovely in the soft light cast by numerous rose candles. Quantities of swcet peas, the Senior Class Hower, were used on the table and the place cards carried out the same motif, A bounteous four course dinner was graci- ously served by girls from the Sophomore Class. Thontas Wbitlev, president of the Class of '30, served as toastmaster. Senior Hz'- Y Social One of the most enjoyable social affairs of spring was the Senior Hi-Y Social. :Xt this time the members of the Senior Hi-Y Club were hosts to young ladies of their choices and the junior Hi-Y members and their girl friends. The social was held in the High School auditorium on the night of May 3rd, The sponsors of the two clubs and their wives were chaperones. A very interesting program that reflected much credit on the participants was rend- ered. The nature of the talks showed an earnestness on the part of those who spoke. After this part of the program games and stunts were enjoyed. These were under the able direction of Miss Gertrude Shepard. The refreshment committee fulfilled its part in contributing to the success of the atifair, Pie a-la-mode and fruit punch were served. Men Afro Hosts to Boys .X real stag party was held in the High School auditorium on the night of March 15. 11129. At that time the men of the faculty were hosts to the boys of the student body.
