The Foreign Lan- guage Department, through its three-year courses in Latin, French, and Spanish, seeks to impart to the student not only a mastery of the language itself, but also a basic understanding of the various cultures of these peoples. During the first year, the student masters the funda- mental linguistic structure of the language, with some reading and an introduction to the spoken language.
