One must learn to use it effectively because, in this modern civilization, good communication is an absolute neces- sity for all organized cooperative activity. Through the English courses offered at Burlington High, the student gains considerable skill in the mani- pulation of this language and acquires a taste for read- ing some of the great literature of all periods, from the Iliad to Prufrock. Through a basic knowledge of the English language can come knowledge and power, pleasure and profit.

Guidance personnel assist teachers, the adminis- tration, and parents in understanding the needs, prob- lems and progress of each pupil. The counselor’s day in the guidance office is indeed a busy one. Word gets around that the College Board 10 results have just arrived and immediately there are lines of students to hear the word—good or bad. Ap- plications must be mailed, scholarship forms filled out, deadline dates checked, and jobs lined up for the sen- iors. And so it goes, but the members of this department are all very happy that their days are so busy and they hope that their efforts in dealing with the students will bear fruit later, if not at present.
