ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SENIORS SPORTS ACTIVITIES Dedication To Mrs. Jellison, the Class of 1965 owes a debt which it shall never be able to pay. In September of 1963, our class, as an organization, was practically nonexistent. Our treasury was extremely low and, worse still, we had not yet learned to function as a class. We were without an advisor and, when the call went out for volunteers, Mrs. Jellison accepted this challenge and brought with her a host of new ideas for class projects. Throughout our Junior year, even when the outlook for the future of our class seemed dim, she retained her natural optimism, a quality which has proved to be most helpful throughout the past two years. It is, then, with a great deal of pride that we dedicate this, our yearbook, to Mrs. Jellison as a token of our deep appreciation for her service. What is Burlington High School? This is a difficult question to answer. To be sure, Burlington High School is a building, composed of bricks, cement, steel, and glass. However, to us as graduates this school is more than the physical structure. It is rather a spirit—one which we shall carry with us for the rest of our lives. We have just completed twelve of the most important years of our lives: years of growing, years of learning, years of preparing ourselves to meet successfully the problems of adult life. For many of us graduation from Burlington High marks the end of our formal education. Others will seek to further their education in a college or a business or a trade school. But whatever the case, the significance of our years spent at Burlington High School will prove itself many times in the years to come. We, the members of the Arrowhead staff, sincerely hope that this yearbook may be a means of remembering the peo! years we have spent at B urlington High. nyt Dace er Pg DSR ieee te Ey pamemmeniak nat Te ; (aif osc ET AE ABTS “od AND FACULTY School Committee Graduation is the climax of twelve years of hard work and accomplishment. You have com- pleted the prescribed courses of study and you are now entering a new phase of your youthful life with unlimited opportunities and challenges awaiting you. But no matter what way of life you may elect to travel, you must understand that your goals are not reached by wishful dreaming. Your chances for success are improved only through preparation, planning, self appraisal, personal de- velopment and effective work. Above all, have faith in yourself. With faith you need have no fears for your future. It is the fervent hope and prayer of the School Committee that Almighty God grant you the strength and wisdom so necessary to meet the challenges of adult life. Thomas J. Kelleher, Jr. Chairman of the School Committee Dr. Herman J. Dunsieth For each of you, graduation from high school is but a beginning. The quotation, “begin and the rest is easy” is oversimplified but full of wisdom. Many in- dividuals waste time and opportunity, not deliberately, but by not beginning, not getting up and doing. Begin to move and follow through. Automation, the loss of some positions from the labor market, development of new positions, will cause many to assess their positions in the economy more than once. A requirement for success is the determination to succeed. There will never be a time when you can give up learning. Learn- ing and doing are important to you now and later. B egin . . . now. Success to each of you will come, the last opportunity has not been presented, nor has all the effort been put forth to have successfully found the ultimate answer. Opportunity will be present for each. Be prepared. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1965: ay a ee hae se 6 8 8 6 Sethe tetets =e we = - —e - Mr. Thomas Mohan In his capacity as assistant principal of Burlington High School, Mr. Mohan is essential to the smooth functioning of the school. Maintaining discipline, act- ing as a liaison between parents and the school, and formulating student course programs are but a few of the many tasks that occupy his day. Often one of the first persons to arrive in the morning and one of the last to leave in the afternoon, Mr. Mohan always seems to have time to help any students who need it. His understanding of students and their problems and his fair treatment have won him the respect of all those who have ever sought his assistance or needed his guidance. Mr. James Horton The successful operation of any school de- pends largely upon a capable administration. The services performed by the administration range from keeping the school on a sound fiscal basis to encouraging students to pursue their education further after graduation from high school. In his capacity as principal of Burlington High School, Mr. Horton is the key figure in the ad- ministration. In trying to meet the needs of a growing student body, his tasks are many. How- ever, during the many years he has held his posi- tion, he has always been available to give assist- ance to anyone who needs it, whether student or faculty member. His contributions to Burlington High have indeed proved to be invaluable. ee H Hh i i 4 Mrs. Billings Department Head Miss Fallon Mr. Horgan Mr. Mullany Guidance Department So many times the question is posed, “Just what is Guidance?” One of the main functions of this department is to assist all pupils in making appropriate and satisfying personal, educational, and vocational adjustments and plans. Guidance personnel assist teachers, the adminis- tration, and parents in understanding the needs, prob- lems and progress of each pupil. The counselor’s day in the guidance office is indeed a busy one. Word gets around that the College Board 10 results have just arrived and immediately there are lines of students to hear the word—good or bad. Ap- plications must be mailed, scholarship forms filled out, deadline dates checked, and jobs lined up for the sen- iors. And so it goes, but the members of this department are all very happy that their days are so busy and they hope that their efforts in dealing with the students will bear fruit later, if not at present. Mr. Fogelberg Department Head Mr. Connor Mrs. Dooley Mr. Hall Miss Laffin Mr. Macione Miss Murphy Mr. Murphy Mrs. McVea Mr. O’Brien Mr. Smith Mr. Yore English Department The English language is a living dynamic force. One must learn to use it effectively because, in this modern civilization, good communication is an absolute neces- sity for all organized cooperative activity. Through the English courses offered at Burlington High, the student gains considerable skill in the mani- pulation of this language and acquires a taste for read- ing some of the great literature of all periods, from the Iliad to Prufrock. Through a basic knowledge of the English language can come knowledge and power, pleasure and profit. Mr. Nugent Mr. Brosnahan Mr. Curtin Department Head Miss Flynn Mr. Perry Math Department In today’s world, where there is an ever-increasing demand for mathematicians, physicists, and engineers, the role of mathematics in the school curriculum has become extremely important. The Math Department at Burlington High offers a full program ranging from arithmetic, through algebra and geometry, to trigo- nometry, analytic geometry, and principles of calculus. The pace is constantly being quickened in order to include even more advanced studies in mathematics, so that students coming from Burlington High have an ex- cellent background in this area. Mr. Harrington Miss Cyran Mr. Pars Mrs. Tarason Mrs. Bernstein Mr. Contardi Mr. Loukas Department Head Mrs. Burt Mr. DeMasi History Department Capitalism, Communism, Collectivism, Mercantilism, Socialism,—names, isms, enough to baffle any student. These and many more confusing terms burst forth from the Social Studies rooms in “B” corridor. Whether it be the discussion of retailing and monopolies in economics or of national and world problems in Prob- lems of Democracy, it is ever the pur- pose of the department to preserve and translate into greater effectiveness the ideals of American democracy. Anatole France once defined the art of teaching as “the art of awakening the natural cu- riosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards.” Truly these words typify the attitude of the Social Studies Department in their struggle to lend a deeper appreciation and aware- ness of the world about us. Mr. Jay Mr. O’Doherty 13 Mrs. Lazerson Mr. Roach Mr. Long Mrs. Tyman Mrs. Wadsworth Mr. DelDuca Mrs. Dwyer Department Head Foreign Language Department Mr. Eaton 14 Mrs. Finn Mrs. Romay (missing) Language is the most fundamental means of cultural expression within any civilization. The Foreign Lan- guage Department, through its three-year courses in Latin, French, and Spanish, seeks to impart to the student not only a mastery of the language itself, but also a basic understanding of the various cultures of these peoples. During the first year, the student masters the funda- mental linguistic structure of the language, with some reading and an introduction to the spoken language. More advanced grammatical structures are learned in the second year, along with considerable reading and oral work. The third year includes advanced work in composition, both oral and written, and the reading of several literary works. Foreign language students have a distinct advantage in having the use of the excellent language laboratory. Mr. Twomey Mrs. Bruce Librarian Library An integral part of school life is the. library. Here, an excellent collection of books, magazines, and pamphlets is made available to students. For the stu- dent preparing a term paper, collecting information for a science project or doing independent study, the library offers a wide range of reference material, a well-trained staff, and an atmosphere conducive to learning. Industrial Arts Department Industrial Arts is an essential phase of general edu- cation that involves the preparation, growth, and guid- ance of the individual for modern living. It is not de- signed for specific occupational preparation, but for Industrial Arts in Burlington consists of two sec- tions: the Technical which is an educational program similar to the college preparatory course tailored for the student planning to enter a two year technical the exploration of industrial knowledge and methods, and the development of such attitudes as will enable the youth to adjust more adequately to the duties and responsibilities of a democratic society dominated by the works and products of industry. Mr. Leslie Department Head Mr. Hedemark 15 school after graduation; and Practical Arts, a course offered to the student who plans to terminate his for- mal education with graduation from high school, and seek his fortune in the industrial world. Mr. Pimentel Mr. Lucente Mr. Peterson Business Department The business leaders of tomorrow will come from today’s classes in Business Education. Special instruc- tion in business skills and techniques is given through the use of such equipment as the adding machine, mimeograph and typewriter. Whether it be balancing a budget, digesting courtroom procedure or developing good work habits, students are offered a well-balanced program tailored to meet the increasing needs of the world of business. Mr. Keon Miss McCabe Mr. McLaughlin Mrs. Niles Mr. Russo Miss Smith 16 Miss Cronin Department Head BAbRAAAbBA: “ eee anaaaaaaaaaaaae a BERBSAA Miss Kilgore Department Head Mrs. DiNapoli A ‘ Mrs. Marvin Music Department The Music Department has several different offerings by way of courses and extra-curricular activities to fulfill the students’ needs. For those who wish to study music as a major subject, special courses are provided. Students who enjoy singing may join the Gen- eral Chorus or the Girls Glee Club. Young Thespians demonstrate their talent in musicals sponsored by the senior class. Instrumental students find their place in the School band, or spe- cial groups such as the Dixieland Band. Thus music, “the soul’s own speech”, finds its many forms of expression within the department. i Fine Arts Department The art program of Burlington High School stresses creativity, visual percep- tion and self expression. The program offers five courses of study which are conducted in a relaxed studio atmos- phere. The program endeavors to de- velop a keener awareness of aesthetic values and to provide an opportunity to explore personal interest and aptitudes. A study of art history is made for further understanding of cultures past and pre- sent. The program strives to develop a sense of selectivity in the use of art at home, in the school, and in the commu- nity. For those students who wish to con- tinue in art or its allied fields as either a vocation or avocation, courses offer a basis on which to build. Mr. Deechan Department Head Mr. Lussier Mr. Wood Mrs. Granfield Department Head Miss Lufkin Mrs. Pollack a cv Mr. Garraboto Mr. Dunn Mrs. Macione Mrs. Nowicki Mr. Welter Mr. Zollo Science Department Microscopes, Bunsen burners and test tubes are but a few of the instruments being used by our science department. The budding scientist inhabiting the labs of the “C” corridor employ such equipment in seeking to learn more about the nature of the world about us. The preciseness of measurement, the excitement of a Mr. De Martinis Specialist 18 chemical reaction, the curiosity of a dissection—each of these factors helps to lead the interested and sincere student to a more perfect understanding of the organ- ization of the universe. With the increasing emphasis of the sciences in to- day’s modern world, the Science Department has be- come an integral part of B. H. S. Visual Aids To make learning a more stimulating experience is the primary function of the Audio-Visual Department. When students can view slides of Renaissance art or listen to actors perform a Shakespearean tragedy, new dimensions in education are achieved. Thus, by offer- ing a wide range of instructional materials this depart- ment helps to give students a keener appreciation of the world in which we live. The ideal combination of a strong body with a strong mind is the aim of the Physical Education Department. By use of ropes, rings, parallel bars, trampo- lines, mats, etc. students develop their own physical fitness. Health classes stress current trends in Mr. Cahoon Miss Maciel Mr. Knight Department Head Mr. Verzone Miss Somensini Physical Education first aid and their practical application. Intramural sports teach fair play and good sportsmanship. Top athletes are honored at the Sports Banquet which represents the climax in interscholastic athletics. Future Plans: College, become a success in life, and live out West. A university is not a birthplace of poets or of immortal authors, of founders of schools, leaders of colonies, or conquerors of nations. It does not promise a generation of Aristotles or Newtons, of Napoleons or Washingtons, of Raphaels or Shakespeares, though such miracles of nature it has before now contained within its precincts. Nor is it con- tent on the other hand with forming the critic or the experimentalist, the economist or the engineer, though such too it includes within its scope. But a university training is the great ordinary means to a great but ordinary end; it aims at raising the intellectual tone of society, at cultivating the public mind, at purifying the national taste, at supplying true principles to popular enthusiasm and fixed aims to popular aspira- tion, at giving enlargement and sobriety to the ideas of the age, at facili- tating the exercise of political power, and refining the intercourse of private life. It is the education which gives a man a clear conscious view of his own opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, an eloquence in expressing them and a force in urging them. It teaches him to see things as they are, to get right to the point, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is sophistical, and to discard what is irrele- vant. It prepares him to fill any post with credit, and to master any subject with facility. —John Henry Newman 64 JOHN SIRACO, Valedictorian of the Class of 1965, has been an honor student throughout his four years at Burlington High. During his senior year he has been the president of the National Honor Society, in which capacity he acted as host at the Second Annual Regional Conference of the Eastern Massachusetts Association of National Honor Society Chapters. Student Council The Student Council is the most important agent of student government in Burlington High School. It is comprised of repre- sentatives from each of the five classes in the school. The chief purpose of the Student Council is to promote harmonious relations throughout the school; provide a forum for discussion of school problems and policies; to stimu- late interest in student activities; give direction and financial aid to student activities that need as- sistance; and to act as liaison be- tween the student body, the fac- ulty and the administration. The size and the importance of the Burlington Chapter of the National Honor Society have increased considerably this year. Eligibility for membership is based on scholarship, leadership, service and character. The Society sponsors activities during the year to raise funds for the two one-hundred dollar scholarships given at graduation to deserving senior members. The most significant project of the Bur- lington Chapter this year was the Regional Conference of the Eastern Massachu- setts Association of National Honor Society Chapters, which was held at Burling- ton High School on Saturday, February 6, 1965, with sixty-five high schools having chapter members in attendance.
