The Senior Class wishes to express its deep appreciation and gratitude to Miss Eileen Laffin who devoted so much of her time and effort helping us make this yearbook a success. Pe As gradua- tion day approaches, each of us, as members of the Class of 1964, is viewing it with mixed emotions — happy with the thoughts of future prospects, and bewildered as we think of decisions we must make. The future will reflect these last three years, and it will be up to us to show that we have used them well. Our high school has offered us the opportunities to prepare ourselves, and it was up to us to take advantage of these offerings. We must be able to use the education and guidance that have been given to us if we are to make the right decision, according to our own beliefs. We hope that this year’s ARROWHEAD will be a remembrance of your Senior year, and _ that in the future it will remind each student of some special days at itiieliny Sdicetion | ee : Mu Kueh dui Auth hun iid RUEME UNHEE: SPATES ENOUMEg The Senior Class is pleased and honored to have Mr. Loukas as a class advisor and friend. When he arrived at Burlington High School three years ago, we, the students, were going through a period of adjustment as we were entering the new high school; our surroundings were strange and unfamiliar. The previous unity and closeness of our class seemed to be dissolved. Because of this, school spirit and cooperation were low. Mr. Loukas, recognizing our need of guidance and assistance, rallied to our cause. He began with the Student Council. It was given a greater importance in school activities. He became especially interested in our class and was made our class advisor. Without his help, understanding, patience and influence we would never have been successful in many of our endeavors. We, therefore, dedicate this yearbook to him, who has devoted much time and effort in our behalf. i HKespectful Jribte John Hitzgerald Kennedy In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility; I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it, and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. A D SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS DR. HERMAN J. DUNSEITH To THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1964: Congratulations and best wishes to each of you, as you leave our portals and pursue your interests in the challenging world of today! Whether you continue your education beyond the secondary level, accept a position in business, or enter the armed services, it is my sincere wish that you will be happy and successful in your chosen career. While you were in high school, we tried to offer you wise counsel in a friendly manner. Our services will always be available to you. Do return to visit us so that we may share your suc- cesses with you. As you leave your Alma Mater, may your fondest dreams be realized! MARY L. BILLINGS Director of Guidance M | N This has been a year each of you will remem- ber the rest of your lives: the year you graduated from Burlington High School; the year that witnessed the assassination of the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy; a year occasioned with joy and sorrow. Each student who has attended, is attending, or will attend Burlington High School leaves something of himself, as he participates in the various program activities within and outside the school. Each has something to give, and the giving of oneself is important. All of us need others; all of us are indebted to others; all of us are served by others. We cannot learn without active effort, nor can we develop without partici- pating. It is well to remember that we cannot save life — we can only use it. Time cannot be stretched — we can only stretch ourselves. It is our willingness, our attitude, our gra- ciousness, our strength of character, our capacity and productivity that will mold and build for today and tomorrow the school spirit and tradi- tion that will bring justifiable pride to all in future years. As a graduate in the class of 1964 and as you reflect upon your years at Burlington High School in future years, may you recall many joyous moments and view with pride your accomplishments. HERMAN J. DUNSEITH Superintendent of Schools DIRECTOR OF GUIDENCE MRS. MARY L. BILLINGS leh A Ll The Class of 1964 has a tremendous task to undertake. You are only a small tributary entering the mainstream of all graduates for this year. However, you must do your part to accept significant leadership in the pattern of the accelerating social changes going on about us. These changes have been moving over the past several years and reached a tragic climax in the recent assassination of the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. This act of violence points very clearly toward the need for a deeper understanding by all citi- zens of the large issues that are involved in the leadership requirements which this nation must adopt. Through education we must eradicate all intolerance, bigotry, and hate. We shall have to make very many positive advances to combat those whose thinking leads them either to the far left or the far right. You, therefore, both individually and collec- tively, must accept this challenge to assist in solving to some degree these problems, which are thrust upon you. The dedication with which you approach the acceptance of this challenge will reflect on how well you have learned the lessons presented to you at Burlington High School. The entire Faculty joins me in wishing you great success in all your future endeavors. JAMES M. HORTON Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MR. THOMAS A. MOHAN I} @ IN PRINCIPAL MR. JAMES M. HORTON MRS. We will always remember the sometimes-hard, treacherous math problems, classes, and shall never forget the enjoyable talks about your family and ours, especially your “Daddy Carl.” You have watched us grow up with this town and have guided us through the many and long years of learning. You have not only guided us in things scholastic, but many of us have to thank you for our future, because without your help and encouragement, we might have given up. We hope that your years here with us have been as enjoy- able as ours with you; that in years to come you will look back and remember all your “Little Guffers.” May your years of retirement be complete with the wonder- ful and happy things you enjoy, and may you be blessed with good health. In Memoriam Let’s take a few minutes To stop and to pray For our dear classmate, Tony, not with us today. Remembered in the hearts Of all his close friends With a memory that lives And shall never end. We take this last chance To show him cur love As we know he is watching From Heaven above. ANTHONY BALESTRIERE January 15, 1961 Class Prophecy While taking a world cruise we decided to look up some of our old class- mates. We hadn’t seen them for 10 years — since graduation night, 1964. Our first stop was Ireland where we saw Vini DeLuca, Frank Battistello, and Al Bartolucci, in the Pisan Club. They had acquired a thick Irish brogue. We were waited on by those sweet Irish colleens: Paula Capozzi, Cathryn Carbone, and Roberta Malatesta. We decided to take a sightseeing tour through the country before leaving. There we were surprised to see in the potato fiields: Pat Woodbury and Aline MacDonnell. When asked how they got a job in the potato fields they answered, “Tt takes brains!” Then we went on to Scotland, where we saw playing bagpipes: Carol Keene, and Charles Thayer. Dancing to the music in their kilts were: Jack Hughes, Rich Boyer, Steve Beers, Jimmy Prindiville, and Billy Pero. It was too much to watch this any longer, so we left for France. In Paris, indubitably, we ended up at the famous night spot, The Marquis, owned by our former classmate, Larry. After sitting down to watch the show, we were stunned to see among the Can Can girls: Kathy Hurley, Joanne Wood, Karen Kalousdian, Peggy O'Sullivan, Gail Leary, Marilyn Lewis, Judy Carpenter, Linda Rowe, and Loretta Sotiros. Seated at the front table enraptured by the performances were: Craig Cooper, Timmy Cosgrove, Kevin Murphy and Howie Graves. The following day, by chance, we were able to witness the racing of the Grand Prix. Some of the participants were: John Biagiotti, Bob Bucknam, Donny Blanchet, Bob Cauldwell, and Albert Gaetani. The winner was a “dark horse,” Eddie Dunton. Standing in the grandstand watching the race were those well known hotrodders: Carol Verbanas and Marcia Litchfield. We tired of France eventually and moved on to Spain. We were greeted at the airport by the newly elected mayor of Madrid, Ronnie Markworth, and his assistant Billy Hayes. He gave us free tickets to the bullfights that afternoon. Dodging the bull was the world famous matador, Lee Baxter. Afterwards we went to a party at his house for celebration. At the party were many world renowned figures, such as the great opera star, Bonnie Jean Joyce, the famous artist, Stephen Furbish, “Queen of the Yakkers,” Carol Yakavonis, U. S. Senator, Richard DiGloria. In a corner we discovered Rita McIntosh eating an apple and Elthera Campbell eating soup. When we returned to our hotel, we entered the elevator, and noticed that the elevator boy was none other than Billy “Low and High” Lowe. The next morning we left for Switzerland. On the train we met Bobby Jacques and Bobby Ingram. We asked them where they were going but they didn’t know. (The last thing they remembered was Lee Baxter’s party and all the fun they had. We wondered what could have happened.) Slight case of amnesia? We reached our destination that night — Zurich, Switzerland. Seated around the fire, at the ski lodge, with casts on their legs were: Richard “Swifty” Garniewicz, Ronnie Burnett and Gil Dashner. We wanted to see where our rooms were and the innkeeper, Bradley Heller, told us where to go. Bright and early the next morning we went out to try our luck on the slopes. We saw many famous Olympic stars there. Among them were those great gymnasts, Linda Crist, Cheryl Osborne, and Terry Mortimer. Also there was that famous track star Linda “Rubber-Legs” Patterson. We soon went to Italy, to see the sights of this beautiful country. First we went to Florence, “city of artists.” While there we decided to have our hair done and who but Mary Serpa was our hairdresser. She told us that many of Europe’s royalty came to her shop to have their hair done. Just recently Margaret “Maha Rati’ Randall was in. Also, among her customers was Jackie Battista, first lady of Cuba. From Florence we headed toward Venice. In Venice we hired a gondola to take us to our hotel. Kenny “The Gondo” Baldwin was our gondolier and Ronnie Given was his pole. Donny Bowers was at the bough. Checking out of the hotel as we checked in, clothed in furs and diamonds and dark glasses, was that international movie queen Flo Amos, made famous by her role in the movie “The Life of Phyllis Diller.” Also at this hotel was the world’s genius of physics, Robert “x?” Heigham. (They said he was there to solve the sewage problem in the city). We discovered there was, in the room next to us, a secret agent of the FBI, sent to Italy to find the international jewel thief “Mugs Manninen.” To our sur- prise, the agent was none other than Chris Palladino. She told us she had been after “Mugs” ever since he stole the crown jewels in London several months ago, along with his gun moll, Carol “Sticky Fingers” Cleaves. On towards Africa. Our first stop was Cairo. They were having a slave girl sale. One by one, the girls were taken out and sold. To our astonishment among these poor, helpless “bargains” were Pat Flory, Dawn Fenwick, Almira Bayliss, Lorraine Duggan, Eileen Gillis, Janice Glynn, Rita Roderick, Cheryl Lorenzetti and Angie Siriani. After the sale we headed downtown. We saw an approaching snake-charmer who we recognized as that famous jazz musician, Jimmy “The Pied” Piper. In the center of the city, sitting on spiked mats were: Harry Powers, Danny Hurley, and Billy Bussell. They said something about who would say “ouch” first. When we left a crowd was gathering and placing bets. From Cairo we went to the jungle on a safari. Our guide was Vincent Reynolds. We were startl ed to see above our heads a man, swinging through the trees. Our guide told us it was Tarzan Feather, “Lord of the Jungle,” but he resembled our former classmate, Danny Healey, a great deal. Then we were captured by a group of natives. We were taken to their leader, George Bennett. He told us they were really not natives, but actors who were there to make a movie. He then took us to the set where we saw the filming of the movie “Why Elephants Wear Green Sneakers.” Harry Cooper played the elephant and George Rawson was the commentator for this great, true to life movie. John Giamo was the choreographer fer the natives and Arthur Graves was head of the wardrobe. Judy Milwood took care of hair-dos (for the lions). We moved to another part of the jungle where we found a tribe of cannibals. Some of the tribe’s head-hunters were: Bob Flaherty, Dennis Dyer, Eddie Smith, and Billy Owen. Meanwhile back at the village, Sharon Boudreau, Theresa Cormier, Shirley Fortes, and Pat O’Leary were busily preparing “people-stew” in the large pot. Bubbling in the pot were found: Elaine MacEacheren, Joni Malo, Elaine Smith and Mary Petrone. Before eating, the village witchdoctor, Carlson Pian, led a ceremonial dance to drive away the evil spirits of the village, such as Sandy Murphy, Leslie Lacey, Debby Johnston, Franny Doyle, George Bornas, and Kenny Ramsdell. Among the dancers were: Sue Cameron, Janet Cain, Lorraine Graves, and Carolyn Pergamo. Banging on the drums were: Diane Napolitano, Ellen Genova, Sue Ann Carrigan, and Karen Bevis. Leading them was Janet Murphy. The chieftess, Dolores Cuozzo, said she would like to have us for dinner. Fearing for our lives, we hopped a swift elephant and fled to India. Howie Strachan, the marharaja of one of the villages, received us warmly and introduced us to his beautiful wives: Janice Feeney, Janice Lindley, Kathy McCarthy, Charlene Brooks, Judy Smith, Sue Donahue, Nancy Cogan, Sue Mason, Sue Ellis, Dottie Brooks, and Connie O'Leary, etc. As you well remember, in high school, Howie was always quite popular among the women folk. We visited one of the larger cities of India, where we were asked by the mayor Jim McCarthy, to participate in the ground breaking ceremonies of the Bob Bannon Industrial Center. Carried away with our digging, we dug ourselves clear to China. There we took a ride on a rickshaw, driven by Danny Krupkoski. In Hong Kong we visited many shops. In one of them we met a number of our old class- mates who were also touring China. They were: Donna Roach, Sally Stewart, Bob Li, Tommy Covert, Eddie Freeland, and Jane McCullough. As we turned around we saw two policemen, Bill McNamara and Maurice Pelissier, arresting Lucien Pouliot, Denise Filiatreault and Sandy Hebb, for shoplifting. Next we visited a novelty shop owned by Carolyn Wing. The salesman, Eddie Savje, tried to fast-talk us into buying “a statue of a lady with a clock where her stomach ought to be,” which greatly resembled Linda Finucane. This master- piece was created by Jeanne Doane. Because we had spent all our money in other shops, and we loved the statue so much, when the salesman turned around we stuffed the statue into one of our bags and trotted out the door. Almost imme- diately we were arrested by Eddie Surette, who led us to the city jail. In the cell next to ours we hear, sawing away at the bars, Sheila Murray and Ellen Field. They had been taken in because Sheila treasurer of the Sandy Oliver Corporation, was jiggling the books with Ellen as her assistant. Kathy McKim, who had been run in for starting a riot in the rice paddies, was placed in solitary confinement at the end of the hall. Well, here comes the wardens, Brian Manser and Gregory Gibson. Now off to our twenty years in the rock pile. Din mMAaAQ The purpose of the Varsity Club is to promote within the athletic groups the highest type of spirit, and to encourage inter-scholastic activities. Also, to promote within the school and the community a spirit that will exemplify the highest degree of sportsmanship. The Varsity Club sponsors many activities in order to raise money to buy sweaters and awards for deserving athletes. Among its fund raising activities are: the concession stand at the football games, the Alumni basketball game, and the selling of key chains. This is the second year the Varsity Club has been in existence. This year 1963-64, the Varsity Club made its greatest stride forward in lettermen, and money raised and spent on the athletes of Burlington High School. This was the first year that two individual award banquets were sponsored by the Varsity Club, one for fall sports, and one for winter and spring sports. With the growth of the school and athletic program, we look to a bright future and continual growth of the Varsity Club. aseball Back row: Coach Curtin, P. Hiltz, T. Mangan, F. Ricker, T.
