Classmates: We, the class of 1961, have reached the end of our high school days. We are about to step out into a world filled with untold new adventures and offering unlimited and challenging opportunities. Although we are anxious to step out into the new, we are reluctant to leave the old. We should like to remember Burlington High School forever as we leave it today and for the many close friends we have made. It is the purpose of this book to keep these many delightful memories alive. It is the Editor’s fond hope that in the years to come you will turn to these pages and recall the excitement of a basket- ball game, the pleasures attached to a prom, the hilarity of our senior play, some of our classroom adventures, and maybe memories of a friend you have not seen for years. ROBERT GIVEN at ined Biers We, the Senior Class of 1961, respectfully dedicate this issue of the Arrowhead to Mr. Charles L. Nugent. All of us sincerely appreciate his help and guidance both as math teacher and as counselor. Message TOM the Superintendent To the Seniors: To you, the Class of 1961, | offer my heartiest congratulations. As a class you have achieved well scholastically and have impressed me with your wonderful cooperative spirit, eager to make a success of every undertaking. If you, as individuals, carry this determination into your future fields of endeavor, your life, | am sure, will be a successful and happy one. As you take leave of us, be assured that we of the School Department stand ready to counsel and advise you in any way possible. JEROME J. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools. saps fhe MH Nfice To The Class of 1961: A new day is dawning. As you go forth into a world distraught with indecision and upheaval, it is most important that you apply sound judgement and critical thinking to formulate wise decisions. While you have been students at Burlington High School, the Guidance Department has tried to direct and prepare you to face the complexities of adult life. As you leave your Alma Mater, it is my earnest hope that by following our counsel, your fondest hopes will be realized and that each of you will have a most successful and happy future. Congratulations and good luck! MARY L. BILLINGS Director of Guidance Sa dea fo The Class of 1961 will be the last class to grad- vate from the present high school building. This will be the 22nd class and it will be the largest. Burlington has had many changes during these twenty-two years with the most startling of these within the last twelve years during which you have attended school. The complexion of the town has changed from a small, rural suburb to a large munic- ipality having a tremendous influx of industry. A great many of the industrial plants located in the town are involved in making products which had not been invented when you started the first grade. In order to cope with these changes, the municipal officers of Burlington were fore-sighted to develop plans for the expansion of the facilities involved in the operation of town government. The School Committee, especially, has built three beautiful ele- mentary schools and under construction we have the new high school which will be occupied next Fall. In addition, there is another committee formed to build still another elementary school. The major problem to be faced in the immediate future is that of the junior high school aae students. MRE rincipal You, as the graduating class, will now take your places in the town as citizens and upon your shoul- ders will fall many of the burdens of the operation of government. We of the Faculty sincerely hope that you have learned well your lessons in order that you may be enabled to perform your duties in an outstanding manner. The entire Faculty and | join in wishing you good luck in all of your future endeavors. JAMES M. HORTON Principal MR. THOMAS MOHAN Assistant Principal Miss Grey Mr. Fogelberg Me Puente! (Ee roph aa This is WBHS on your television screen telecasting from the 50-yard line at the 1970 annual Luti Charity Game. The players are just emerging onto the field led by Bruiser Finn. Not far behind is Muscles MacDonald followed by Crazy Legs Puleo, the crusher duo, Mel and Billy Smith, Bowl-em-over Strout, Chubby Stott, Bull-dozer Doyle, Bill (The Tank) Bushee, Killer Sanchez, Hurling Hurley, Grease Pit Peterson, and finally rolling out onto the field with his usual graceful jaunt comes the captain, Twinkle-Toes Howell. Down along the sidelines we see the field manager, Don Peterson trying to straighten the chalk lines he drew last night. To his left we find the head official Honest Steve Springer and his assistants, Call-em Right Roebuck (who’s still working his way through high school), and also Pat Hyde (the girl with the built-in whistle) and Rough-House Hinckley to provide the women’s viewpoint. And to their left trying to untangle themselves from the water buckets they dropped we find the tape and gauze boys, Narramore and Harvey. The band members are taking their places across from us. They are led by a truly superb musician, Swinging Bart, alias Vincent Bartolucci, accompanied by Cool Connors, Trombone Chambers, and that jazzy drum beater, Fontaine DeLuca. We have quite a program set up for you today, Ladies and Gentlemen. Between the halves we'll have Twirler Guertin, Legs Lundgren, Torrid Torres, and More More Mortimer leading the world famous Devilittes. Our star reporter Shutterbug Shea has scheduled an interview with the opposing coaches Give-up Given and George (Fumbilitis) Mosnicka and in order to give you those thrilling aerial shots we have planted Chancy Nancy Pratt atop the flagpole. We've really gon2 over-board to supply the viewers with close-up views of the players in action as you can see by our two reporters swinging from the goal posts, Faker Fay and Rubber Goodrich. The concessions will be sold by O’Leary, O'Leary, Russo, Russo Company, those famous connoisseurs of bad food who have employed a veritable army of hot dog throwing, mustard slapping venders such as Half-a-dollar Harff, the hot dog boys Herby and Ronny Johnson, Dick Russell and those queens of the popcorn stands Ellis, Jackson, Anderson, Ramsdell, McKinnon, and Skelton. Some of the top officials of the state as well as many of the most important per- sonnages in the country are at this game today. Up in the box seats you see the Governor, Lucky Lacey, the Attorney General, Bull-dog Keene, and the Treasurer, Lily Liljegren. Right next to them incidentally is Machine-gun Masciocchi and his gang, Blue Beard, Gentle Gentile, Clutcher Hutch, Mugger Matthews, Trucker Jones, Prindiville, (the Mata-Hari of the under-world), Lombardo, (the Mad Bomber), and Manninen, the purse snatcher. However, our most frequent patrons, the bookie firm of Guido, Penny, Caterino Hogan are missing today du e to the diligence of our local constable Chuck Newton and his deputy “Chester” Small. Over in the celebrity section we see glittering with jewels La La Moore and her secretary “Ma” Griffin, who is working in order to support her large family. With her are those belles of Society, Snooty Seminatore, Money-bags Morgan, and under all those furs, Mal Cunningham. Down in the grandstands we find several well-tanned natives, fresh from vacations in Hawaii (John Fortes, Ruth Kindred, Dick Healey and Gayle Swett) as well as Judy Pareseau who has just finished a dancing tour of Paris night clubs. The game is just about ready to begin. Our cheerleaders, Agnes Allen, Judy Chase, Barbara Roberto, Nancy Richardson, Betty Pazeretsky, Jan Goss, Cathy Van Germet and Edna Watters are just leaving the field. Our time keepers, Stop-watch Kimball and Ticker Kelleher are giving the signal, our chain bearers, Jorgenson, Ulson, and Lovejoy are set, and our camera operators Lens Tobin and Spotlight Duncan are focused on the ball. Twinkle-Toes kicks one high into the air. And now a few words, on the fine qualities or our sponsor, Petunia’s Inc., by our flower experts, Winchester and McIntosh. Sorry you missed the game due to our extended commercial, but you wouldn't have liked it anyway. Much of the success and pleasure found in these future fields will depend upon what we have accomplished in the past. That past with which we have been most concerned has been our high school years, because it was here that we acquired the definite feeling that we were no longer children. Our four years in high school were full and eventful ones. As Freshmen we acquired new privileges, such as being allowed to attend school dances, new responsi- bilities such as following the traffic rules for the stairways, and new friends with whom we shared our new and trying responsibilities. Our Sophomore year was filled with continuous battles between divisions to see who would go on field trips. One of our most eventful years was our Junior year. We received our long- awaited class rings and sponsored our first prom, “Fantasia.” This was an important year for planning our future careers, at least that was the idea impressed upon us by our counselor. And finally, the most difficult, exciting, and mixed up year of our school life became a reality. We were the Seniors of Burlington High School! We received our graduation pictures, held the ‘Harvest Hop,’’ which proved very profitable, and had a Christmas Semi-Formal. Our Basketball Team reached the semi-finals in the Bay State Tournament. ‘You’re Only Young Once” was a great success. We spent many after- noons preparing our yearbook. The last event of our Senior Year was our prom, “Wonderland By Night.” We will be leaving, with the distinction of being the last Senior class to graduate from this school. Sit up and take notice, World. Here comes Burlington High’s class of 1961! At ypreciation C00 NJ The class of 1961 wishes to thank all those patrons, industrial firms, and business establishments who have made our yearbook possible.
