Editor Biword e 8 As we, the class. of 1958 leave Burlington High School, we are filled with the memory of many wonderful friendships and experiences. Many of these experiences we have in- corporated into our, yearbook so that we may look back upon them in future years. Knowledge is accumulative. What we have learned here is just a beginning. We learn something new every day of our lives, whether it eomes from books, observation, . or actual experience. We, the class: of 1958, truly believe in our motto — “For- ward to Success.” Message PO BT Superintendent TO THE SENIORS: To the class of 1958, I offer my heartiest congratulations. You have impressed me as a class with a wonderful cooperative spirit, eager to make a success of any undertaking. If you, as individuals, carry this determination into your future fields of endeavor, your life, I feel sure, will be a successful and happy one. In return for your many favors to me, feel free to call upon me for any assistance I may be able to render. JEROME J. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools meme, $ F € essage from the cincipal Many new developments have occurred in the twelve years during which the class of 1958 has been in school. Probably the most spectacular of these developments have been the satellites which have been put into orbit about our planet. For several months, we in the United States have heard comments from varied sources that in order to compete with foreign powers we would have to concentrate our education in the fields of mathematics and science. It is necessary, however, for us to proceed into this new age with caution. The people of the United States have developed leaders in other fields, also, through the years. We must not neglect these areas while we concentrate on one. Our future depends on development of capable persons to become leaders in government, art, and business as well as in science and mathematics. No one subject field is all important. Through the development of our curriculum, we have attempted to place all items in their proper perspective. We attempt to cover subject matter for the development of culture as well as for the development of the practical. Our aims are to instill in the pupils the habits, attitudes, skills and ideas which will aid them in becoming well rounded citizens of the future. We know that only a small percentage of our people are equipped mentally and socially to become pure scientists. Through our counseling and testing, we try to locate and identify those who have these capabilities in order to guide them into fields suitable for their talents. The remainder are therefore guided into other phases of possible employment. Some find that high school terminates their formal education and they go directly into the business world. Others will continue in further education and will become nurses, technicians, engineers, and teachers. Whichever of these is your choice, the faculty of the Burlington High School wishes you great success. JAMES M. HORTON Principal whicntion The senior class of Burlington High School wishes to dedicate its yearbook to Mrs. Mary Niles and Mr. William O'Connell. Both of these teachers have always been willing to listen to our sorrows and have helped to solve our many pressing problems. To both of them we owe a debt.of gratitude. — SENIORS Chase ficers Fromk Gregory 7 LU) es icks erect eee ree nag ee Cai Edward) Cass 003i ee ee ee VICES Eee miei Catherine Stack ....... ‘Secretary Kathleen Dalton .. Our childhood days are over, And we're knocking on life’s door; For the time has come to pass When these walls see us no more. Now put away your childish airs, Your toys and foolish games; Before that door comes many stairs To climb to meet your aims. Life is but a challenge, And this we all must meet, Yet with Faith, Hope and Charity Your days can be complete. Deanna Simonelli John Sarjeant Gi S Aad (To the tune ‘Far Above Cayuga’‘s Waters”) Fair and noble Alma Mater haven of our youth; Symbolizing highest standards of fairness and of truth. Standing out so staunch and bold ‘gainst a sky of blue, To all those who know and love thee, glorious to view. CHORUS Sing out now our saddened voices, Loud her praises tell; Hail to thee our Alma Mater; Burlington farewell. Friendships here we'll ever cherish, memories fond and true, Of our happy, carefree school days we shall keep life through. But this year’s team had that extra something that transforms an average team into a hard-hitting, well- coordinated machine. That extra something was the desire to win. As any coach will tell you, desire is an all important factor in football. Without it a team cannot hope to be successful. The boys combined this desire with ability and hard work to produce the best season that Burlington has ever had. This year’s team sported not only a 7-2 record, but also the second highest scorer in the state. We were edged out of first place in the con- ference by a flashy Chelmsford team, but finished in an undisputed second. With all the experienced potential left on the team, we look forward with great expectations to the future teams of B.H.S. The four departing seniors wish the boys all the success possible. Appearances at rallies, football and basketball games, and the organization of a pep squad were part of the program to carry our teams on to victory. Another activity of the squad was marching with.the band in the Woburn Halloween Parade, and in the dedications of the new American Legion Post and Post Office. We were fortunate enough to attain our goal of again placing in the Ashby Girls’ Tournament, and came in second place in the cheering com- petition. With the loss of four seniors there will be openings to fill, and we wish to extend our best wishes for a successful and happy cheerleading year to next year’s squad. A few years later we advanced to the “Big Building,” where gradually we each earned the honor of doing a favor for our prin- cipal, Miss Blanchard, and were able to please her with our stage debut in playing the part of yellow daffodils or a multi-colored shadow. Our last year in Grammar School was climaxed by a picnic day at the beloved Johnson's Grove, although a number of “measle- stricken’’ classmates had to be left behind. Our most confusing year came next—that of the seventh grade — when we were faced with selecting courses, remembering locker combinations, and steering clear of detention halls. Then came 1954, the ninth grade, and the realization that we, too, would become Seniors some day. To attend school dances became an unwritten law in our lives. Our Junior year probably holds the most lasting memories. We purchased our class rings, held our first Prom with all its floating remembrances, saw our boys shine on the grid-iron and our girls on the basketball court, with the cheerleaders ever yelling in the background, took our first exams for college entrance, and followed our first leads to a job. Soon we shall also think of our Senior year as history but always remembering those boisterous class meetings, constant need for money and our friends. The rocket, christened the ‘Red Devil,” is’ carrying that glorious class of 1958, Burlington High. The chief pilot, General ‘Smiling Jack Sar- jeant,”” has just descended from the Red Devil to investigate the rather unusual surroundings. Finding everything quiet and peaceful, a con- dition soon to be changed, he signals for all the passengers to follow him. The passengers have much to talk about for they recognize in themselves many changes in appearance and personality. Our most honored President, Frank Gregory III, will greet and interview our passengers during this tenth reunion. Glancing about him he recognizes the noted news commentator, Miss Dee “Simmer” Nelly. As President Greg approaches her, Miss Nelly is busy taking pic- tures of her éminent classmate, Miss “Lola” Merino and her famous coiffure consultant, Sir Matthew Newcomb. Meanwhile Greg interviews that outstanding actor, “Megaphone” Newton, wko has just completed his latest motion picture, ‘The Speechless Man.” To the left of Megaphone stands Barbs Bennett, better known to all as “The Red Hot Mama of B.H.S. Some of her most famous torch songs have been composed by such artists as “Elvis’’ Poley, ‘Farmer’ Brown and his Seven Chicks, and John “Andy” Sun. Next in sight we see “Low Rane” Jones, “Zsa Zsa’’ Puleo, Eddie Heminsway, and “Heda’’ Van Ramsdell, who are ardent mem- bers of the newly formed ‘Big Peoples Club” of Fifth Avenue, New York. This club has done wonders to promote the vast sale of Short Shorts and the latest creations of J. “San- forized’’ Wolons. In the distance we hear the great jazz band of Ed “Cass-Bar’” blowing up a storm. He is accompanied by such well known musicians as Jeannie “Sachmo’ O'Connor wailing on her trumpet, Jane “Knuckles” Given on her baby-grand, Gene “Spike’’ Cahalane onthe washboard, and last but not least ‘Hank’ Raynor on the Bongo-Bongos. What GEMS!! During all this fun a messenger, who ar- arrived from Earth by the Milky Way Express, handed a telegram to President Greg. It stated that Miss Sophie Dobbins and Miss Leona Van Smithers could not attend because their con- tract required that they finish their latest T.V. series, ‘The Adventures of Sophie and Lee in Shangrila!” We. all bid farewell to the “Big Cheese” and his friends as we start back to the rocket for our big banquet. Time sure did fly and we all hope to visit here again real soon. Well, here we are in the .Oxygen Room of the Red Devil awaiting the delicious meal pre- pared by the famous dietician, Miss “Elsa” Skelton. She was assisted by those jolly French chefs, known the world over, “Jacque” Schwab and Sahara “Antoinette” Peterson. Ooh, la la! C'est Magnifiquel!! Daintily nibbling on a “Hors D’oeuvre” is that graceful ballerina, “Twinkle-Toes” Mala- testa. Seated next-to her is that colossal Charlie “Atlas’”’ Kennedy, who recently ac- quired the title of “Golden: Gloves Man of the Hour.’ He is being served a cup of tea by our own staggering bartender of the evening, Hic-cups “Don't’’ Long. We are fortunate to have Hic-cups with us for our reunion as he just flew in this past week from New Hamp- shire, where he has been building cabins for that great corporation, ‘‘Hal’s Contractors and Sons.” Dessert is to be provided by Dick “Howard” Johnson and ‘his 28 flavors, who are popular caterers of Hollywood, California. “Clarence” Hurley and ‘Mortimer’ Shea, Comedians of the stage and screen, are the first to sample Johnson's Moon-Beam Special. They describe this as being ‘Out of this world!” At this time our President is observing how many in the class of ' ‘58’ remained in Educa- tion. These attending this gala affair are Miss “Mopsy’’ Lynch, Superintendent of the “Lil Girls’ Nursery, Miss “Lou-Ella’ Seminatore, who had just been awarded the Nobel Prize for her best-selling novel, ‘‘Goosie’s Gander,” | and Mademoiselle ‘Estelle’ Melendee, who is now professor of French at Boston University. We also find that many of our girls have been quite successful in the business field. Those would include Miss Katie Dalton, Treas- urer to the President of the United States of America, Miss ‘Carolee’ Towse and Miss Kay “Bay” Stack, who own and manage the ‘Ace Models Enterprizes. ’ Some of her most famous models are “Margo” Berrie, Helen “Irresistible” Haines, “Phoebe” MacDonald and ‘Sweet Rosie’’ Campano. These lush girls are often modeling the newest Sack Creations seen in New York and abroad. As departure is nearing we see in the corner Miss Nelly taking some final pictures of Chief Justice P. J. Cassidy, Senator of Massachusetts Gene Dalton, and the foreign Ambassador to Italy Edward De Marco in order that Dick Shepherd may publish them in his “Flock of News,” of which he is Editor. This journal is . a hum-dinger and is enjoyed by everyone. The time has now arrived when we must leave this planet and return to Earth once again. We have thoroughly enjoyed our 10th reunion and will be looking forward to the DexteOue, LORETTA SEMINATORE ESTHER MELENDY DRAMATIC CLUB OFFICERS Sitting: Mr. Fogelberg and Mr. O'Connell Standing: J. Sarjeant, President; P. Cassidy, Vice-President; C. Skelton, Secretary-Treasurer A recent addition to our extracurricular activities at Burlington High School is the Dramatic Club. During its:‘two years of existence it has been a credit to our school. In order for a club to progress and be a credit to its school, there must be two factors present, good leadership, and good mem- bers, each having a sincere interest in, and co-operating wholeheartedly with the club. We have been fortunate enough to have these qualities present in abundance and the results speak for themselves. If it had not been for the unselfish efforts and interest of Mr. O'Connell, Mr. Fogelberg, and Miss Murphy, and of course, the co-operation of the club itself, these results would not have been possible. There is a bright future for the Dramatic Club in Burlington High School and we feel sure that its future results will be summed up in one word — “successful.” JOHN SARJEANT, President Ws oocved Chhds A new organization, the Record Club, initiated by the Sophomore Class and under the careful supervision of Miss Cronin, has been a great success. The participants in this club enjoy listening to all popular songs, such as Rock ‘n Roll and Rhythm ‘n Blues. They also listen to some of the Classics. The records that are bought help to make the dances at B. H.'S. more enjoy- able. We are also planning on purchasing a new phonograph, which will serve our dances. The funds are raised by the payment of dues. We feel that this activity is interesting to those who are musically inclined and we hope that this club will grow stronger year by ‘year. Without the complete cooperation of everyone on our staff, we could not have com- pleted this work. SS ip Society The National Honor Society is now a recognized organization in our school. The rules for membership are as follows: 1. That students must obtain a. grade of B for at least two full terms to become a member, and if a member should get a C in any subject, he will automatically be dismissed. 2. That if a member should receive a B—, he has the next term to bring it up to at least a B. 3. That Sophomores: may only serve as probationary members until they become Juniors, when they become full-fledged members. Here is truly a magnificent opportunity for all students of Burlington High School to receive recognition for their academic work: And for a member who hopes to go on to college, this society is extremely helpful because all colleges recognize the implied quality of such an organization. We hope to give a scholarship to some senior at Graduation this year, just as we did last year. Dances and basketball concessions are helping us to raise funds for this purpose The Senior members wish to thank Mr. Mohan for his excellent guidance work with the soci ‘ety, for he has helped us immensely in planning our activities. Without his help, we are sure we could not have succeeded at alll. CHARLES KENNEDY (Honored Member) FRANK GREGORY III (Treas urer) — { a f 4 As ; % Fee First Row: G. Skelton, Secretary; E. With money that has been acquired, a scholarship of $50 will be given to a deserving senior and a sports trophy to be presented at the Varsity Club Banquet has also been inaugurated. For the purpose of making money to carry on its activities, a dance was run and school supplies and other articles were sold by council members. The purpose of the Student Council is to act as a mediating body between the student body and the faculty. One thing accomplished this year through the Student Council was the moving of the Basketball games from the Memorial School to the High School. I know in the future the Student Council will be more important in school functions, but this can only happen with the help of the student body as a whole. EDWARD CASS, President. And if the members of this dignified organization have lately had sore feet, it’s because they have been learning to march with the help of Mr. Bettencourt. Our Merry Music Makers have enlivened football games, the Armistice Day Parade, the Woburn Halloween Parade, the Dedication of the Nike Site and the New Post Office, at our numerous school assemblies, and, of course, our inevitable commencement exercises. In the Spring of ‘58 the band will play three performances in a Music Festival, one at Tewksbury, one in North Andover, and one in Burlington. All the smaller school bands will join together for a massive show. The Junior Band, for students in the lower grades, is Burlington's supply of up-and-coming music personalities. Through these we hope to expand and improve our “morale-boosters” for the future classes at Burlington High School. JOHN ANDERSON First Row: J. Blais, L. Malatesta, K. Fay, P. Hyde, M. Carlin, S.
