Panthers Finish ilr1 The Burlingame football team went undefeated in league play this year, the first time since 1968. Well-coached by Bob Booker and his staff, the team had a very fine overall season record of 7 wins and 3 losses. Perhaps not coincidentally, the last time he was head coach Booker's leadership resulted in an M.P.L. Championship in 1976. There were many highlights over the season. Dan jackson's designation as M.P.L. Co-player of the Year and County Player of the Year was certainly one of them. A highpoint that the whole team will remember was the game against Hillsdale when the Panthers trailed 7-6 with 1:06 left to play and they faced a fourth down situation on the Hillsdale 19 yard line. Sophomore kicker Eddie Ramirez came in to at- tempt a 36 year field goal. You could feel the pressure on the young sophomore. When the ball was snapped, no one took a breath. Eddie kicked it: lt had the height-the length-and it was good!! The Panthers had beaten the Knights 9-7. The team had many standouts, such as Dan jackson, the leading rusher in the league and first in the county, who made All-league and All-county teams. Other All-league players on first team offense were Matt Hesselgren and Greg Barton. Defensive players who made the All-league team in- cluded jeff Fraser, Mark Walen, and Mark Alioto. Greg Bar- ton and Mark Alioto also made the All-county team. The team's season was capped by a crushing victory over rival San Mateo. ln post season play, the team represented the M.P.L. in the C.C.S. playoffs. They faced a tough Saint Francis team who won 17-0, and who later became a C.C.S. finalist. 'pa Lashing out with a fury of sheer desire and deter- mination, the Burlingame frosh-soph football team opened the season with a 12-6 victory over host Crestmoor. But this was one of only two victories the Panthers were to obtain this year, the second coming against Aragon. It was the kind of year that can only be described as frustrating, as Burlingame lost two close games to Capucino and San Mateo. However, no one can say the frosh-soph lacked ex- citement. ln their first offensive play of each game the Panthers fired the long bomb. They were also the only team to execute the shotgun offense, and they varied their attack with fake punts, on side kicks, double reverses and the halfback pass. The Panthers were powered by all-league players Steve Schenone, Tom Bryan and lon Wornick. Ad- ditional force was provided by jeff Bussani, Lloyd Giron, joe Couto and Eric Howell, who were awarded honorable mention.
