Here, every absence is systematically reported, checked, and approved or disapproved according to the judg- ment of its head, Mrs. Marion Suhr ia gentle lady disarming in appearance, but the possessor of a phenomenal memoryl. Each illness is re' ported to the State Board, and a complete record of each studentls absence is kept on file. lt might seem that all would run smoothly, but such is not always the case. Mrs. Suhr may expect any- thing during the course of a day and usually gets it. From morning rush hour with the usual wild excuses to afternoon closing time with a few stragglefs still pleading their cause, life for he: never has a dull moment. TA .Din It n runmmi or '51 rm BY Fndiiunii , lf The year was one of change on the local as well as national and international scene. The ten- sion of the rapid expansion and consequent building programs of the high school district left their mark on the health of Superintendent William Van Voris and necessitated his taking a leave of absence. In midyear Burlingame's prin- cipal, Thomas Reynolds, was elected to fill the vacancy, with Karl Loefiler as acting principal. Vic Mangini was drafted as dean of boys. Judy Campbell capably handled the dean of girls post. In the teachers ranks Burlingame bade farewell to Thomas Hardwicke, who left because of the controversial loyalty oath, and urged Vera Maple, who left at the close of the fall semester, to hurry back. Welcomed to the high school were new teachers Joe Zieminski, Albert Fine. Eliza- beth Clang, Myron Newman. Phyllis Strickland, Curtis Woodruff, Leo McCarty, and Robert Ewing. l is 'Q gf: Campbell fu Wim 1 Q in -. r.:-N sa-vb e ,ir ,r-Y7.f'7 .' I-W I A f ,L . , rj! 'vw 'ff -X552 W--41. Burlingame's freshman class is typical of most freshman classes throughout the country-wide eyed, eager, and enthusiastic. The channeling of their energy to useful tasks fell to their class advisors, linguist Muriel Antonacci and biologist Larry Haseltine, and their class president, ,lim Messinger. In their attempt to use this enthusiasm, a freshman mixer dance was held a week after the beginning of the school year. This was a rather stiff and boring affair, but after two months of xwkl ln spite of faculty aid few of the new freshmen ven- furecl on fo the gym floor at the frosh mixer. familiarizing themselves with the school, the freshmen held a barbecue, with homespun en- tertainment following it. The added two months of experience showed a very marked improve- ment, with this one termed a rollicking suc- cessf, By the time the second semester had begun the frosh,' had elaborate plans under way for the freshman assembly, an annual event typi- fied by classical piano solos and the almost com- plete absence of Ucornf, After the senior as- sembly, this is usually a welcome change. Freshmen girls sit shyly in the bleachers waiting for the boys to break the ice. With a record of three wins and live losses, the Panthers ended in a tie for fifth place with San Nlateo. High- light of an injury-riddled season was the Bling- ums, win over the Bearcats from San Mateo in the Big-Little Game. Three BHS backs, Crisafi, Dawson, and Peterson. ran wild to rack up a final score of 19-12, with the Red and White on top. The injury bug seemed to be the main plague of Coach Elmer Schaake's squad, as practically every Panther hrst-string player was sidelined at one time or another. The only BHS initial team members not. hit hy the hug were co-cap- tains Fred Aurel and Harvey Koepf. Main hurt to Panther hopes was the loss of scatback Chris Vlassis after onlv one game had been played. The 'Imighty mitew was out for the rest of the season with a broken leg. Guard Stan Harrop suffered a broken wrist in the sec- ond game of the season. that -put him out of the running for awhile. Wallace and Peterson suf- fered broken ribs. Wells got a broken ankle in the South City game which henched him for the rest of the season. Then came the San Mateo game. The Panth- ers. sparked bv a 12-6 win over South City. were really feeling high for the contest. With only two days to go until the Turkey Day Classic, BHS learned that starting halfhacks Terry Moore and Jerry Boss were ineligible to compete. But the Panthers went out and won anyway. The Blingums hit a new low in scoring when they lost a 52-0 contest with Palo Alto. In the final game of the season they lost to a surpris- ingly strong Willow Glen team by a 51-6 count. The Blingums were honored in the All-P.A.L. selections by having one player on the first team. The All-P.A.L. Panther was guard Fred Aurel. Tackle Harvey Koepf was named to the second team, and Ridley, Sullivan, Leider, and Moore were given honorable mention. BLINGUM KITTENS DROP CHAMPIONSHIP IN HARD-FUUGHT PLAYUFF This year's frosh-soph football season marked the return to coaching circles of Principal Tom Reynolds, after a lay-off of ten years. Reynolds made his comeback a good one, as his team ended up in the second place berth of the PAL. This yearis squad operated out of the single- wing and proved to be a power-house in junior varsity football circles. With Lowell Weight, Hank Loumena, Joe Cairati, and Norm Nord- ling sparking the back field, the Panther Kittens racked up wins over every team except Sequoia, the club they met in the title play-off. Usual players in the line were Ed and Dick Hanson at the ends, Bill Bull and Ron Turner at tackles, George Cantaloub and Augie Tassen at guards, and Jim Vlassis at center. Ken Persons came in to bolster the line when the club was on defense. ,fv- FROSH-SOPH SQUAD--Firsf row: Mgr. Umland, Glasgow, Biggs, Dodd, Riley, Cairati, Persons, Staples. Second row: Hansen. Fry. Anyone who witnessed the Big-Little Game will certainly agree that the Panther heavy-weights could real- ly play ball when they wanted to. Although the Panthers won only four games out of eighteen all season, they made good show- ings in all league games and most of the practice games. However, not one member of this year's squad will ever forget the Hrst few games, when the team was still green and scores were large against them. Sparked by diminutive Chris Vlassis, the Panthers really rambled against San Mateo and Sequoia, although they were defeated in both contests. Vlassis was the only senior on the first team, so if statistics mean anything, next year's squad should be a good one. Juniors on the initial string were Lee Johannson, Fred Biagini, and Bruce Thomas. Once again, as in past seasons, the always- good Palo Alto and Sequoia tank teams seemed to be the powers of the league. But the Burlin- game thirties gave the Viking and Sequoia thir- ties a run for their money in that division. Top men for the varsity were Ronnie May in the 50 free. The orange team, strong in hockey. proved its all-around ability by winning the intra-mural games in basketball. Captains of the first teams were Lois Polson, Barbara Williams, Doreen Patsel, Patsy Grace, and Margaret Valinga. Miss Moore capably coached the team, with Gail Faust as manager. With basketball finished, the girls turned to volleyball, a game not as strenuous as basketball, but equally exciting. The evenly-matched color teams played each other in a series of hard-fought games for the championship. Competitions with nearby schools were also arranged, pro- viding a good test of Burlingame girls ath- letic prowess. With warmer weather. the gym pool was opened for after-school swimming and lifesaving. Participants were taught not only the basic strokes but aquacade forma- tions. The big project for the swimmers was the presentation of an aquacade for open house during public schools week. MUSIC IS SUMETHING IN BURLINGAME Prof.,' Brose's bands have merited the high- est ratings in annual competitions so regularly that any lesser honor would probably require an explanation. His consistent success appears to be due in part to an esprit de corpsi' which is developed in the band members. For weeks prior to the San Jose band festival, they willingly ap- peared at 7:30 a.m. for practice. Their annual community concert with the San Mateo band, also directed by Brose, always plays to a packed house. ln addition, the band is a vital factor in that elusive quality, school spirit, which is so neces- sary for a successful school. The band contribu- ted to the color and excitement of games by pepping up the rooters with school songs and by marching in formation on the gridiron during halves. A pep-band, consisting of the first few students in each section of the band, was present at rallies to spark the event. 51' IN SURROUNDINGS conducive to the playing ot fine music. Although the group does not com- pete with other nearby organiza- tions in contests, its excellence is demonstrated in the two annual programs it presents. The Christmas concert is for- mal and impressive, with the em- phasis on heavier classical music. Somewhat lighter and more popu- lar is the spring concert. in which several student soloists are en- couraged to participate. Conductor Elmer Young, an ac- complished violinist but rugged individualist, is the man responsi- ble for the top quality of the or- chestra.
