The girls basketball team, under the direction of Mrs. A. W. Pleasants, began the season by defeating Downing High School of Lexington, Virginia. Since this was the first year of basketball at Burley, there were many persons anxious to participate in this sport. Miss June Washington was chosen by popular vote as Miss Burley, to reign at the Western District Basketball tournament March 1, 1952.
