Spirit is that intangible something, a quality, an at- titude of mind, which at its best makes one go on when he can go no farther. Makes one continue to give his best, cheerfully even when he can't win. The word connotades vigor, verve, whole- heartedness in doing and in being. It is a highly prized asset of'an individ- ual and of a group for it measures the difference between lively participation and unimaginative acceptance, be- tween initiative and dull pedestrian- ism, between existing and living. Spirit is not visible, but evidence of it can be both seen and felt. Strangers entering our building have commented on the air of purpose and direction which prevails throughout the school. We have tried to make a repre- sentative collection of real evidence in word cmd picture. Through the efforts ofthe County Administration we have our new school building which they have plan- ned and financed They also keep our .rcliools running smoothly by hiring teachers, custodians, principals, and by budgeting the schools' finances, providing transportation for students and selecting our Curriculum. i'Mr. Carlson, our principal at the head of the high school administra- tion, sets the tone for learning and fun. His wonderful personality vi- brates throughout the school, He is assisted by Mrs. Blauer, his secretary, who gives much of herself to the school and helps us in many countless ways. We are very privileged to have Mr. Franks and Mrs Darrington, our counselors, who have listened patient- ly to our problems and given us help and guidance in solving them. Quite different from the freshmen are the well-adjusted sophomores. They have adapted themselves to the daily routine and are having fun while patiently awaiting next year when they will become uupperclass- men . Between the sophomore year and the junior year there is an amazing period of growth both mentally and physically. The juniors are Well on their way to the adult world and life takes on many new meanings. One's junior year is nearly always a very precious one to remember, The seniors have finally reached the year which they have been wait- ing for. To be a senior in high school means to have almost completed twelve marvelous years of training and preparation for' life. The boys urged on by shy, interested glances which they translate 'come hitherf summon enough cour- age to ask a sweet young girl to the dance. The halls buzz with girls comparing notes on what to wear, how to fix their hair, new dresses, new hairdos and the usual female chatter. The boys add to the confusion by discussing which dances to trade, borrowing dad's new car, and the ever present problem of money. At the dance a marvelous transition is seen. Girls are transformed with upswept hairdos, their prettiest frocks, and wobbly. heels, Looking hand- some and dashing are the boys with slicked-down hair and polished shoes. Starting out the season with tive unexperienced mem- bers, they have Worked and practiced together once a week to perfect their playing. With Dr. B. V. Although you weren't aware of my presence, I helped influence some of the decisions that were made concern- ing where to go on your field trip, who would decorate for the formal, and when new members would be installed. Some think that it's the extra- curricular activities that really make school life. Of course, it is a matter of opinion, but we must agree it plays ar. important role. Not only have you, the students, gained closer association with class- mates and society, you have gained skills in leadership and the ability to carry responsibility. Perhaps our most lasting impression was that 14-12 score on Veterans' Day. Basketball too, did its share in carving events to remember. These sixteen girls were chosen in the spring of 1957 through consideration of their pose, prancing ability, ease, legs, and co- operation. The Stepperettes held weekly prac- tices throughout the summer months to learn further in their marching and drilling and to perfect their baton and flag twirling. Each girl learned' to work with the baton, flag, and pom- poms thus they could perform with a larger variety in the halftimes. Under the direction of their captain the girls Worked out their own floor plans and drilled to the music of the Pep Band. Highlights of the Stepperettes' first year were leading the school band in the fair parade and marching at the halftime of the Twin Falls-Burley tournament game. This group has Worked completely Without supervision and has received recognition from people through- out the valley.
