Handi- capped by a lack of experienced players. the hard work which the team put forth failed to accomplish much in'the way of winning games. but it was not without results-never once was the Bobcat tradition Burley teams may be beaten but never whipped broken. Whatever else may have been lacking, it cannot be said that they were deficient in that most important asset of any athletic team-fight. No matter how big the score or how had the breaks against them. a game was never over 'till the final whistle. In the opening game of the season. Coach I-ljort's boys were victims of inexperience in a contest which ended with Qakley on the long end of a I4-O score. The Big Ten Conference season opened on Burley's home grounds when the Bobcats tangled with the Buhl Indians in a thrilling contest. Burley first showed in this game flashes of the power that was theirs, After pushing Buhl all over the field, the team emerged with but a 6-6 tie. The Bobcats fe'll before the onslaught of the powerful Pocatello Indians in the following game by a score of 39-0 The same story was repeated when Burley was again defeated by a one-sided score. 34-0 this time by Twin Falls In a nip-and'-tuck battle with the Blackfoot eleven. a game in which breaks played an important part. Burley's hard-luck team came out behind by a score of 12-6. Having yet to win a game, the Bobcats, entered the American Falls fray with a determination to succeed. and by dint of hard work and heads-up ball success was accomplished. The final- score was Burley 13. American Falls O. In the following game the rejuvenated Hgiortmen overpowered the Kimberly Bulldogs I4-0. in a non-conference battle. i l nn i H nn I lg CHARLES WARR Then came the season's climax, the annual Armistice Day game between those arch-rivals of Idaho high school sports-the Burley Bobcats and the Rupert Pirates. Both teams were rated as equal at game time, and a battle was in store. The pep and enthusiasm of both factions reached its highest point. The day was perfect. a wildly-cheering crowd flooded the bleachers, and partisan spirit ran riot. The two teams met under perfect conditions with fight as their watchword-it was. in short, a sportwriter's paradise. This struggle between traditional enemies proved to be a combination of thrills and heartbreaks far overshadowing any of the season's previous games. The game began with a bang as Burley gained possession of the ball and marched goalward. only to be turned back on the very threshhold of a score. Again and again during the entire contest the Bobcats penetrated within scoring distance, and each time bad breaks or a fighting Pirate defense forced them back. In the second quarter Craven. Rupert's halfback star, broke away for a few seconds for a long run which spelled defeat for Burley's team. Burley completely dominated play for the rest of the game, and stood out in every depart- ment of play. as the result of twelve first downs to three for their opponents and 230 yards to llO from scrimmage indicates. But when the game ended. they were behind in the all-important result-the score of 6-O. Both the team and Coach Hjort should be commended for the hard work and spirit shown throughout the season. Letter-winners this year were: Lavern Bell. Ernest Craner, l.aMar Staker. Norman Nielson. Charles Warr. Deloy Taylor. Ralph Cioold, Donald Redfield. Lloyd Allen. Murray Walker. George Burton. Jack Higgins. Meredith Lambert. George Crawford. Denny Pace, and Leo England. Lavern Bell was elected honorary captain for the vear. Following the idea of increased participation in athletic events, Burleys second stidng. composed of a large number of boys, played various games with surrounding teams during the season. lf nu sm Il :mil Vl:RN Blil,l. f , ANECOIZCJ UECU72 r 22151 SQUAD ,. fx. After having won the South Central District Track an'd Field Meet and placing second in the lnterdistrlct Meet. making the most successful season in years, Burley's 1935 team entered three men in the State Meet. who amassed a total of ll points for their school. One of these men, VJillard Mainord, put his name down permanently in the Idaho athletic hall of fame and that of Burley High when he broke the state record for the broad jump. a record which had stood since 1921. with a leap of 22 feet 713 inches. He also took a first place in the high jump, after failing by the narrowest of margins to establish a new record in that event. Ernest picked up a fhourth place in the pole vault to complete Burley's total. Lavern Bell was the other Bobcat qualifier for this meet. Under the tutelage of Coach Hjoit. over fifty boys reported for work each night as the 1056 team was being rounded into shape, Vrfith such a large turnout, the Bobcats should have a good team for this year and for a couple of years to come. During the regular season the Bobcats won I5 games and lost 9. Their conference record shows seven wins and six losses. giving them a Class A standing of fourth place. They avenged all but one defeat. being beaten twice by one opponent. The climax of the regular playing season came in the final game with Oakley. this year's district runner- up, After a close fight during three periods before the largest and most tense crowd seen in the Burley gym- nasium in years. the Bobcats were trailing Z3 to l9 mid- way in the final quarter. Then with their characteristic last-minute spark. the team dropped in baskets from all angles to win by a 27 to 25 score. PHILIP ACAITURRI The Bobcats entered the district Class A tourna- ment with l avern Bell. lfrnest Craner. Philip Acaiturri, Charles NVarr. David Keaton. Bob Lynch. Ray Powers, and Elwood Rich as regulars. l.eo England as alternate. Their first encounter was with the VJendell Trojans. the team which proved the giant-killers of the tourna- ment. After three periods of close play in which Burley couldn't seem to find the hoop. XVendell gained a slight advantage and by careful stalling during the majority of the final period managed to pull through with a 28 to 26 victory over the Bobcats. ln the second game the Bobcats met the Kimberly Bulldogs In a better fighting mood this time. the boys showed' flashes of their pre-tourney power in the final half of the contest. The game started slowly with neither team able to hit the basket with any degree of consis- tency. Burley led at the quarter 3 to O and at the half had increased the margin to 6-2. Then led by Dave Keaton. the Bobcats swept over the surprised Bulldogs with a barrage of baskets'which left them with a lead of Zl to IZ as the third quarter ended. Coach Hjort's boys met their nemesis in a band of Rupert Pirates. who. far exceeding all expectations. reached their peak in tournament play and proved the surprise team of the series. Functioning smoothly throughout. while the Bobcats seemed unable to get started. the Pirates rang up a 6 to 4 lead at the quarter and a l6 to l0 lead at half-time against the hard-fight- ing Burley team. Then in the third period Rupert cut loose with shots which couldn't seem to miss and went as if propelled by magic to- increase their lead to a 30 to- I4 advantage. Led by Craner. the Bobcats fought back hard in the final quarter but the game ended 40 to Zl. and Burley's hopes were shattered. David Keaton led Burley scorers in the tournament with 25 of his team's 79 points to his credit. He stood third in points per game average in the tourney. Ernie Craner followed by ringing up 22 points. Both Keaton and Craner were given honorable mention on all-tourn- ament selections. Lavern Bell.
