FOREWORD This marks the close of another school year at Burkeville High. For some it will be the last. It is our sincere wish that especially for them this 1961- 62 Bearkat will bring back fond memories of the events, teachers, classmates, activities, and classes of this year. As you look through this annual your thoughts may be sober or humorous. The familiar landmarks and faces will always have a warm spot in your heart, we are sure. Whatever the situation or mood we hope you will enjoy reminiscing through this book. As editor and business manager of the annual, we hope that the 1962 Bearkat will always be one of your most cherished possessions to help you relive your 1961-62 school year. I Joy Skelton Butch Choate TABLE OF CONTENTS TITLE SENIORS FOREWORD JUNIORS CONTENTS SOPHOMORES DEDICATION FRESHMEN STAFF ELEMENTARY MESSAGES FAVORITES BOARD OF EDUCATION ATHLETICS FACULTY ORGANIZATIONS EMPLOYEES ACTIVITIES ADVERTISING % DEDICATION To a friend and competent administrator the Annual Staff of 1962 proudly dedicates this volume of the BEARKAT to Mr. W. B. Miller. Mr. Miller has worked 28 years in the Burkeville School system. He has devoted the major portion of a lifetime to his home community for it was within the bounds of this school district that he was born and reared. Mr. Miller has worked diligently to promote the welfare of the Burkeville School. He has exhibited characteristics that have resulted in success. He has been VERSATILE. He has held the position of teacher, principal, vocational agriculture instructor, and the superintendent of this school. In all places he has been COMPETENT, LOYAL, and PROGRESSIVE. From his guidance and direction have come an enlargement of the school district, a modern school plant, and an effective school curriculum. Contributions of such lasting value speak for themselves. Every student will always experience a feeling of gladness when they recall Mr. Bill. Thou shalt be served thyself by every sense Of service which thou renderest - Elizabeth Barrett Browning BEARKAT ANNUAL STAFF STANDING: Herbert Dickerson, Assistant; Sharon Lewis, Assistant; Diane Skelton, Assistant; Judith Clark, Assistant; Mrs. Veigh Miller, Sponsor; Linda Mann, Assistant; Jeanette Marshall, Assistant; Dorleen Boyd, Assistant. The Annual is a record of student life in the Burkeville school. It is a book of mem- ories. I trust that your experiences have been such that you can point with pride to the year's activities. And to you who have graduated, may you look back over the year with great satisfaction. My best wishes are for all the students of our school. Your opportunities are many and your responsibilities great. I encourage you to serve your community with distinc- tion. Sincerely, W. B. MILLER MRS. LEONA CHOATE Tax Assessor and Collector Secretary to the Superintendent h PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE There are many treasures in this world and the world be- yond. There are many roads and pitfalls that lead off or ob- struct the straight passage to the treasures. Travel the main roads carefully, cautiously, and the treasures shall be yours. Always remember that you, an American, have been blessed with a heritage equaled by no other people upon this earth. I sincerely hope you will try to leave a better world behind you. If you do, God's blessings will be along your road of life for you to enjoy. Sincerely, BURDETT PULLIAM BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. W. B. MILLER, Superintendent MR. CALVIN SMITH, JR. MR. D. K. SHADDOCK.
