Our Childhood days had been spent looking eagerly forward to that day. So much happened in the years which followed that time of uncertainty, that it will be necessary to state only a few outstanding cherishable incidents which we will always remember. Our freshman year was spent in becoming accustomed to the rules and activities that were to be the making of our progress in high school. As sophomores we really began our adventures as competitors of other folk like us over the country. We had begun to look for a certain aim for which to work. Then again was that feeling of anx- iety, looking forward to the time we could make our own plans as juniors. By the end of '46 we were well on our way as juniors. That year we had the Faith,Phun, and Food Pheast as the Junior-Senior Banquet. Then came our play, the hilarious Birds of a Feather. Among the favorites, we won F. F. A. Sweetheart and Carnival Queen. We had short programs like Hollywood Canteen. It was quite an exciting year. And now, to the year of years and to the things we are leaving behind, we proudly salute the Senior year of '47 and '48. We won the following school favorites of the year: Best All-around Boy and Girl, Most Attractive Girl, Most Popular Boy and Girl, and Co- Sweetheart of '47. On April lwe had our Kid Day. Alibi Bill, our play of the year, came on April 15. The Junior-Senior Banquet of April ZZ was closely followed by our Senior trip on April 30. Now our chief aim is Not merely to exist, but 'to amount to some- thing. We would like to express our sincerest appreciation to the tea- chers, who, throughout the years of school life, have shown and helped us down the trail and stayed by us in all times, both in fes- tivity seasons and disappointment. We will never forget our years in Burkeville High School. 0 cucsszo Dr 4: as 90 A Q-4 04 We . T. A. The Bur'keville-Wiergate Parent Teacher Association is the most beneficial organization for promoting cordial relations in the community. Its program each year teaches its members a course in cooperation in its various phases. The finance programfurnishes needed equipment for the school which would otherwise not be obtainable. Its study pro- gram teaches members how to deal wisely with their children. Its fellowship activities fosters friendly relation between parents and teachers. Some of the factors which make the Burkeville-Wiergate P. T. A. an outstanding unit in District 1544 are: 1. A large membership each year. 2. Yearbooks on hand for each member , the first regular meeting of . the year. 3. A special feature of pupil presentation at each meeting.. 4. Worth while projects chosen each year. 5. Fathers' Night held each year. 6. Night meetings in order that the fathers may attend all regular sessions. 7. Study courses sponsored each year. 8. Striving and obtaining a high rating from the State Office each year. 9. Efficient and willing workers. 10 A high percentage of teacher attendance. Most credit for the P. T. A.'s success goes to its efficient officers: however, no officer can be efficient without the support of good member- ship. The most outstanding success of the current year is the largest membership, of 138, in the past five years. The P. T. A. has purchased the following for the school this year at an approximate cost of 5700: 1. Black curtains for Visual Education. 2.. Provided a music room for Elementary School. 3. Provided a First Aid Room. 4. Purchased an opaque projector, a wire recorder, and a filni strip projector. 5. Purchased sweat suits for the basketball girls. 6. Purchased Rhythm Band instruments for the primary grades. The foremost goal of the P. T. A. now is to reach more parents through regular attendance to its meetings. THE HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL The Halloween Carnival of 1947-48 was one of the most exciting events of the year for the 'Burkeville School. The funds derived from this affair went to the P. T. A. to support the projects for the year. Preceding the Ha1lowe'en Coronation, the girls assisted with the decorations for the Royal Court. The first year foods class concentrated on The Breakfast. The culminating activity was centered around planning, marketing for, preparing, serving, acting as hostess or guest, and cleaning the dining room and kitchen after at least one complete breakfast of the light, medium, or heavy type. The second year girls entertained the high school faculty with an informal luncheon, through which they gained experience in planning, cooking, and serving a meal. The clothing classes were especially successful. The Freshmen girls made an intense study of color combinations, weaving, materials, seams, button holes and finishings, adjusting and fitting patterns. This group of girls completed two very attractive cotton frocks each, and one piece of kitchen linen. The Sophomore girls completed three dresses, two cotton and one silk. The members of the Future Homemakers Club honored their Moth- ers witha very colorful banquet which was financed with the c1ub's earnings from serving an oyster supper to members of the P. T.A., making and selling candy, and sponsoring a handmade gift bazaar. The girls have enjoyed using and caring for the high quality equip- ment furnished the department by the school board. We feel that this privilege has developed in each girl adesire to own and care for better equipment in better homes.
