CLASS I-IISTCDRY We, twenty-two uncertain boys and girls, booked passage in 1943 on the great airliner, 'The Freshman,' for a four-year trip with Graduation Island as our destination. During the first year this trip did not seem necessary, but when we changed planes and boarded 'The Sophomore,' we were eager to complete our trip. We glided smoothly along on this grand plane. We worked hard and soon gained passage to another airdiner, 'The Junior.' This was an exciting plane. We became better acqdainted with our fellow- mates and had parties, banquets, and other exciting entertain- ments, but this new excitement was soon over. Monday morning, September 2, 1946, we met at the airport, Burkeville High School, for the last lap of our journey. When we settled down in the most magnificent plane of all, 'The Senior,' flashing its emblem, the gladiola, on colors of aqua and gold, only fifteen of our classmates were present to complete the trip. We were all proud of our progress and worked harder than ever before. The banquet on April.18, given the Seniors by the Juniors, was one of the outstanding events of the journey. Our visit on April 25, a dark stormy night, to 'Spooky Tavern' was an event which will long be remembered as a mystery hard to solve. Now we have reached our destination, Graduation Island, which wc have worked for all these years. As our plane glided into the airport each passenger of 'The Senior,' for the first time, realized that the parting moment had arrived and that 'Its not the square miles but the square people that make a nation great.' x ACTIVITIES DON EVANS - Choral Clubg F.F.A. JACKSON Sponsor , an , HOMEMAKING DEPARTMENT The first half of the term was devoted to the study of foods, and nutrition, meal planning and table service by both groups, Sopholores and Freshmen. Since space permits such a short summary of the year's work only the outstanding features will be recorded. After the Freshmen had made a study of the Breakfast Unit they were granted permission to teach a nutrition class in Grammar School to grades from one to seven inclusive. They prepared lesson plans, posters, and other illustrative materials on 'A Balanced Breakfast for a Child.' The young teachers held the interest of the children to the extent that they were urged to repeat the project. The Sophomore group made a study of luncheons and suppers and planned, prepared, and served a Thanksgiving luncheon on two occasions to the faculty and members of the Board of Education. They also enter- tained the local P.T.A. Chapter with a service of coffee and cakes which they had made as a class project. The clothing classes were most successful. The Freshmen girls made an intense study of color combinations, weaving, materials, seals, button holes and finishings, adjusting and fitting patterns. This group completed two very attractive cotton frocks each and a set of stuffed 'Cats' which were given to the school to provide an entertainment for the annual Halloween Carnival. The Sophomore girls completed a pair of hand hemstitched and drawn worked pillow cases, two dresses, one cotton and one silk. Each girl made and dressed a large size character doll. Dolls were sold and funds will be used to add new equipment to the department. Each sophomore girl made a set of kitchen towels with fancy stitches for decoration. The department has been equipped with butane gas, a large butane heater, and two butane Tapin ranges. The School Board certainly did a great favor by supplying this fine equipment for class work. A dinner set, service for eight, was also purchased for the department with funds obtained by the Homemaking Girls. As a whole the work with the 1946-1947 Homemaking classes was s very pleasant task. The students were very cooperative and interested in their work. May we look back and say, 'This has been our best.' Nonia L. Jackson Hosesahing Teacher va ..nvH..w-v w vi un 'w- was W. B.
