EDW, PRCHAL 5 x . x-Q 4 fi Q la .I .-ae. .KJ Hear ye! Hear ye! 'XR I'm the bulldog, mascot of Burke High. I haven't gotten arounx uch since the old school bus was sold. I have my own place in the boys locker room and I've just stayed there and listened to the boys. This fall there was a lot of talk about the changes in Burke High and I got curious. The fellow they call Bumstedt took me on a sight-seeing trip. Boy, did I find changes! The re's a brand new home ec depart- ment. The old band room is the kitchen--pretty as a spottedpup at a dog show. It's all shiny white porcelain, and pink and charcoal from tile floor to dishes and as modern as the cover design of this book. The old ag class room is the sewing room fitted out with cup- boards and fine sewing machines. One has a lot of gadgets and does everything but sit up and bark. The band moved across the hall into the old shop. You won't believe it, but that place is all cream and blue from floor to ceiling and dainty as a French poodle. I coulda buried bones in the old shop and never found 'em again. The new shop is different, believe me. It's down town now in the old light plant building. After a doggone lot of work it's a place the whole town is proud of. It's all here in the book and some of Bumstedt's cartoons besides-funny enough to make a dog laugh. So long for now. I've gotta see a dog about a boy. I'll see you 'round. The Bulldog-- P. S. --I don't mean to complain, but I am a little hurt. I read the story of the A team very carefully--nice Story-but I didn't find even one word of praise for me. Doesn't a mascot get ir! credit? B. After the ex- penditure of much sweat, mus- cle, and time, they finally got the '26 Ford to run. It made a deafening racket, but no one came running to see what had happened. Working on it afford- ed the boys much practical ex- pe rience and no end of satisfac- tion when it finally chugged a- round the block. Many rnothe rs, sisters and girl friends are the proud possessors of cedar chests assembled and finished in the shop. w ax., To the freshman high school was all new and different, but to the upper classmen the changes were almost unbelievable. The firstfew weeks of school the girls stood in the new home ec rooms caressing them with their eyes and trying to realize that their dreams had conie true. In the kit- chen they gloated over ev- e ry stove and sink and cab- inet, every gleaming pan and colorful dish. The new tables with their formica charcoal tops and the pink and white chairs seemed too pretty to use. Surely any one should be able to sew beautifully on those new machines set into their polished cutting tables . When you're a senior, it's different. You get it, and you get it now or else there's no cap and gown for you, brother. That's a thought too awful to contem- plate, and you know Mom and Dad would look on the idea with even less favor. You're think- ing about some Sort of college course, and you ask, Why didn't Somebody knock some sense in- to nie when I was a freshman? But you don't wait for the an- swer because you know that you didn't listen to anybody then. Now you buckle down and slave away at bookkeeping, and you really try to learn to type. Perhaps knowing how to type will earn the money for college. Shop has a lot to offer too. Especially now that there are so many new tools in the big new shop. Of course , you still horse around a little, but underneath you're really pretty serious--at last. And besides, scien- tists have to eat don't they? Cooking a fish is much pleasan- ter than disecting one, espe- cially when there are four beau- tiful new kitchens to work in. To girls the taste of a fish is more irnportant than what makes it tickg boys, on the other hand, take delight in his interior de- corations, and get even more pleasure if they can torment a girl with pilfered portions of his pickled anatomy. The two half backs, Lowell Tolstedt and Larry Zimmerman were elected co-captains. The team loses 7 sen- iors, so prospects for next year are only fair with 6 returning letterrnen. After only an average record the Bulldogs began their string of upsets in District Z8 with a 38-36 win over the Fairfax Broncs. Going into the Region 7 tourney, Burke, the underdog, blasted a tough Armour team 58-43 and upset Scotland 56-55 in an ove rtime victory. The win put Burke in the B Tournament in the Huron Arena. Burke reached the semi-finals by tripping the Canis- tota Hawks 47-46. The road grew tougher as the Bulldogs were matched with a giant Cresbard team. Outclassed but never out- fought, the Bulldogs' victory march had ended. Burke took fourth after losing 58-55 to an Alexandria team, rated second in the A P poll. Lillibridge was a unanimous choice for the State All-Tourney Tearng Kelso received honorable mention. Tolstedt, Frank, Locher and Klug played good ball all year and deserve equal credit for the successful season.
