Wfe are the first GOLDEN MUSTANGSH of Burges High School. Wc rcmembcr that only a short while ago the space now occupied by our school was barren desert disturbed only by small whirlwinds and heavy sandstorms and the tiny trails made by mini. ature creatures that live among tumbleweeds and cacti. We are able to visualize the first shovelful of sand and dirt preceding the great earth movement projects by machines, for then came the bulldozer, the grader, and the laborer. The sand dunes were leveled, the desert animals left in fright, and the foundation was set. The framework was erected, and the great piles of steel, bricks, and bags of concrete soon grew in-- to this magnificent and modern building, con' taining gymnasium, laboratories, library, and classrooms. May Burges High always be an inspiration to the students who come and go ind 1 credit to our community. The Editor

IN MEMCRIAM.. . XVILLIAM H, BVRGES IVOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND Wfilliam H. Burges, for whom the Burges High School was named, was a true man of the Southwest. He was tlte type of man whom Texans admire in that he did great things in a most humble way. He did not have the opportunity for secondary education that most students hay e today hut through private tutors and self-styled education he pre- pared himself for college. Mr. Burges was graduated from the University of Texas in 1889. After graduation, and before coming to El Paso, he worked on a ranch, a time at which Indian encounters were not uncommon, Mr. Burges came to El Paso in the early 1890's and his fame as a lawyer became widely known while he was counsel for a local refining corporation. From early childhood he was interested in the improvement of education through and by the institution of better library service to the people of El Paso. lt is hard for a community to pay due respect to one who has done so much for his fellow men, but El Paso is proud to have a new high school named in honor of MR. XVILLIAM H. BURGES. Principal, Burges High School
