Along with new cheers and new cheering methods came new uniforms and shakers. All this, of course, took money and lots of it. The girls worked all through the summer on bottle drives, bake sales, and numerous other money raising projects. Undoubtedly, the main summer project was attending the Golden Eagle Cheerleader's School, held at Meredith College in Raleigh. The forty attending squads from all over North Carolina and Virginia were under the instruction of a staff from the National Cheerleaders Association. Head of this staff was Mr. Eddie Goch. The camp consisted of five days of hard work and constant practice. Also, classes were held in tumbling, pom-pom routines, and mass cheers. Blue, red, white, and green ribbons were awarded daily. The Spirit Stick and the Coca-Cola District Championship Award were the main awards and were given at the end of the week. A group of interested students led by Glynnis Fowlkes attended the week long camp and were awarded two green ribbons for honorable mention and one white ribbon for improvement. They also received the spirit stick for one day. The varsity cheerleaders led by Linda Maruska received several distinguished awards as well as daily awards. Among their daily awards were two blue ribbons for superior per- formances and two red ribbons for excellent performances. On the final day, they were awarded a Golden Eagle Mega- phone for pep and spirit, the coveted Spirit Stick , and the top honor, the Coca-Cola District Championship Award. Baby Edith gets a surprise! 72 Wagrub Wow! Was that a risque joke! Who me? What did I do? Being on the WAGRUB Staff is an experience that is not easily forgotten. This was the first year Juniors were included in Wagrub Class. Because the Wagrub Staff is one of the most active classes, it too had its problems. Money was the main one. Due to a lack of student participation, the staff had to have cake raffles and sell candy at the ball games. During March the staff sponsored the Happening, which was really great. A statement often heard in Wagrub Class was — Raising money is a necessary part of producing an annual; without the cash — no yearbook! Another great problem was taking good pictures and com- posing suitable write-ups. Being on the staff means much more than just deciding what pictures go where. Staffers and the editor alike learn to appreciate the problems when they receive the proofs! Wagrub 73 O.K., lets go over this one more time Student Council meetings sure are amusing. The purpose of the Student Council is to conduct numerous activities involving the students of Burgaw High School, to advise the student body, and to devise workable plans for the functioning of activities and student relationships. The Student Council started the 1970-1971 school year with the election of officers and council mem- bers. The officers were elected by the Council mem- bers of the previous school year. They are President, Beulah Crews; Vice-President, Lucinda Moore; Secre- tary, Velma Hagans; Treasurer, Cathie Henry; Report- er, Venessa Nixon; Historian, Bernard McIntyre. There are thirty Council members: one representing each homeroom and two held over from the previous year. Mrs. C. Davis and Mr. A. Merrick were appointed by Mr. Uzzelf and approved by the Council as sponsors of the 1970-1971 Student Council. Homecoming activities, the biggest event of the year, were sponsored by the Student Council. The parade was successfully lined up by a committee chaired by Belinda Johnson. Halftime activities during the game were lined up by a committee chaired by Cathy Gattis. 74 Wagrub That's what we like at meetings - compactness and alertness! STUDENT Cathy finds time to snooze. COUNCIL Wagrub 75 BEACON With the expansion of the school, the Beacon changed too. For the first time, only four issues were published with six pages in each issue. The staff was new and so were the Beacon's new advisors. Miss Henry and Mr. Pendergraft. The business staff really got busy and sold ads, so that the first paper could be bigger and better than ever. The Beacon is the students' paper and this year, it proved to be just that. The staff tried to present B.H.S. as it really is, and it has achieved its goal. Advice from the advisor. Ah-ha! More money for the school newspaper! 76 Wagrub Legs . . . but no ideas! As always, you'll find the modern day Ben reviewing the efforts of the press. On November 3, 1970, the National Honor Soci- ety held its annual tapping service. The nine old members tapped eleven new members. To become a member, a student must have an average of 90 or above and excel in leadership, scholarship, character, and service; and be voted on by a majority of the faculty. Honorees let their lights shine. George lights his entry into the National Honor Society 78 Wagrub “I can't seem to forget you I don't know whether or not I like that! I can't seem to forget you ... SCIENCE CLUB The three raving beauties of the Senior Class. When it comes to arguing with girls. Tommy is at a loss for words! The Science Club of Burgaw High is the largest and most active club in school. The members of this club are interested in all types of science from general science to physics. They have scheduled meetings in the lab where they have speakers or cookouts. Some of the highlights of the year were a trip to the planetarium in Chapel Hill, a big Christmas party, and a visit by Dr. B. Frank Hall. In order to join the Science Club, one must first take the constitution test and then be initiated. This experience is usually unforgettable. Ifllir Here come de judge! Here come de judge! As FFA representative, Barbara receives her FFA jacket. 80 Wagrub FFA AND VIC A Our 1970-71 school year began at the Father-Son Banquet. Our new slate of offi- cers were selected. They took office when the previous school year was completed. First, we had a few summer meetings; then it was time for the State F.F.A. Con- vention. We attended as usual. Our chapter participated at the state level in the Parlia- mentary Procedure Contest and was fourth in the State. The prize money, $50.00, was divided by the team members. The new school year began, and we had the first meeting which our green hands attended. They were impressed by this meet- ing. The club always strives for well ordered meetings; Roberts Rule of Order are fol- lowed. To summarize our club's activities, we participated in various contests organized to promote various fields of agriculture, educa- tion, and leadership. We strive to prepare members for active roles as adults in com- munity life. Rosemary talks to the future teachers about future teaching. The Future Teachers of America was established in 1937 as a project of the National Education Association upon the proposal of Joy Elmer Morgan, then editor of the NEA Journal. In 1957, the Future Teachers of America, which served both high school and college students, was divided into two organizations. The college program was named the Student National Education Association, while the secondary school program retained the name. Future Teachers of America. The T.T. Murphy Chapter of the Future Teachers of America was founded on our Campus by Mrs. E. C. Futch in 1956-57. Through the years the organization has grown rapidly. The members sell calendars, observe American Education Week, make posters and Bulletin Boards, observe Teach- ing Career Month, and award the Teacher of the Year Trophy each year. Wagrub 81 Sometimes, I just don't know why I joined this club. DRAMA Hum, maybe we could just chop that scene out! The Drama Club is organized for the self-expres- sion of students. It helps to develop potential dra- matic talent as well as talent in other areas of dramatic production. Of utmost importance are those who work with make-up, costumes, and staging. Not to be forgotten is the faithful fellow who pulls the curtain. The climax of our successful year was the award- ing of trophies and placques to outstanding members of the club. Is Mr. Faison blushing at Beulah's sexy pose? Oh yeh, that's what the copy says! 82 Wagrub They're having too much fun to be just singing! Open your mouth and let the sound come out . . . GLEE CLUB This year the Glee Club consisted of seventeen members: five boys and twelve girls. Under the direction of Mrs. Linda Hobbs and part time accompanist Merle Martin, the Glee Club presented a Christmas program for the P.T.A. and as the '71 Wag- rub was put to bed, a spring concert was planned. Merle is known around school for his ability to play the piano. Wagrub 83 LIBRARY This is the only way I can watch my soap opera without being disturbed. Library assistants' chores are simple but numerous. They do such things as help other students check out books, file magazines, record circulation, put filed books on the shelves, and keep the library straight. Our biggest task is trying to keep peace! The librarians are Wanda Wilson, Mary Holmes, Vickie Johnson, Debbie Yount; Edith Moore, Robin Moore, Cathy Newkirk, Ann Trainer; June Swann, Cathy Mercer, Glynnis Fowlkes, Susan Sherman; Kathy Bannerman, George Peay, Bill Holloman, Alton Peay, and Charlie Rivenbark. These library assistants are assisting themselves. George tries hard to look like a library assistant. 84 Wagrub Those smiles may turn to frowns when they really become homemakers. Busy at work these girls are learning to be very economical. The Future Homemakers of America were repre- sented at the Homecoming Football game by Geral- dine Heath whose escort was John Fedoronka. On Wednesday, November 11, the F.H.A. girls held their initiation. They were dressed as little girls with red skirts and white blouses, carrying out the F.H.A. colors. They also wore white aprons with FHA monograms and big red bows in their hair. All old members wore the F.H.A. emblem. The new mem- bers were asked to say the creed and sing the FHA prayer song. They weren't allowed to speak to boys all day long and if caught had to pay a penalty. The day was climaxed by a cookout in the student park. Their advisors Mrs. Mary Faison and Mrs. Yetive Davis accompanied them. Also invited were Mr. Rich- ard Uzzell and family and Mr. William Jordan and family. Gather around children; time for our bedtime story F.H.A. Sherleen tackles the dress making problem. Some times we pay attention and sometimes we don't. MONOGRAM In order to become a member of the Monogram Club, one must first earn his letter in one of the sports played at BHS. To earn a letter is no easy task. It takes hard work, many hours of practice, and much determination to do one's best. The members represent BHS both at home and away and are a shining example for our school. And he was so-o-o-0 dreamy Carol finds time to gossip even at Monogram Club meetings. Monogram Club gathers for another meeting. 86 Wagrub Praying fpr a victory. The couple that cheers together, stays together. Although the Pep Club was not officially active, there were evidences of it almost everywhere around BHS. It's members were active students who had a deep concern for our school. Despite a lack of funds and materials, they worked with the cheerleaders to assure the teams of signs for the games. Pep Club members could be spotted literally yelling their heads off at athletic events. Their many hours of hard work were often rewarded by the fruits of victory. Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Wagrub 87 You do just what I say and everything will be just fine! BUS DRIVERS Bus Drivers play an important role at B.H.S. Without bus drivers, many students would not be able to attend school. Being bus driver is a large responsibility. A driver must provide safety, not only for himself, but for his other passengers as well. A bus driver must have perseverance to get up each morning and patience to trans- port those noisy, noisy students. He must complete several troublesome re- ports each month, but come pay day, his efforts are well rewarded. Patricia tries to beautify her bus. 88 Wagrub From dust thou art and to books and pictures thou shalt return! Poetry and poets are not known to excite the usual high school student. Carl Sandburg is an exception. Especially since the State Board of Education has made live performances of Sandburg's work available to North Carolina high schools. Every fall for the past seven years the Flat Rock Playhouse's Vagabond Players have toured 60 of the State's high schools with a shortened version of The World of Carl Sandburg. Sandburg lived in Flat Rock for many years, and his home was near the Flat Rock Playhouse, a theatre he personally encouraged. It was officially designated the State Theatre of North Carolina in 1961, and in 1962 the company staged the original production of The World of Carl Sandburg, a dramatic presentation of the poet's works. More than 300,000 students have seen the production since it began touring North Carolina high schools. Included in this year's itinerary are two schools in Pender County. The play was presented at Burgaw High School on Wednesday, November 18, at 1:30 p.m. The World of Carl Sandburg, written by lorman Corwin, toured the United States for a year with Bette Davis and Gary Merrill. The program included excerpts from Sandburg's poems, stories, and a collection of folk songs. The yearly tour is coordinated by Ray Rhodes, director of athletics and school activities for the State education agency. The tour is sponsored through funds made available to the State Board of Education by the General Assembly. HI I Excedrine headache No. 2,180.
