Our class officers were Johnny Westbrook, Mary Emma Blanchard, Lucille Balcombe, Mary Ann Jonkheer, and Christine Leimone. Our class had officers in every club and organization in which freshmen could participate. We took pride also in the fact that our class was well represented in all three sports. As a grandfinale to our freshman year in high school, our class boarded the new activity bus one day in the latter part of April and headed for Raleigh. On May 19, 1959, our freshman year came to a close, and three months of long-awaited sum- mer vacation began. In Augustwe returned to our Alma Mater as sophomores. We chose Joe Bryant Newkirk, Hugh Highsmith, Wilma Lee Wright, Johnny Westbrook and Julia Mallard to lead our class. Again this year our class was well represented in the sports field. Members of our class on the football squad were Johnny Westbrook, Joe Bryant Newkirk, Hugh Highsmith, Boyd Benson, Wayne McLendon, David Powers, Alan Jordan, Richard Collins, and Bill George. Sophomores onthe boys' basketball squad were Hugh Highsmith, Joe Bryant Newkirk, Johnny Westbrook, and Wayne McLendon, on the girls' basketball squad were Wilma Lee Wright, Christine Leimone, Ruth Batson, Kay Haynie, Judy Futch, Susie Young, Joyce Herring, and Yvonne Rivenbark. Thus in May of 1960, we completed the first half of our high school career. We began our junior year with fifty-six members in our class. Elected to lead us this year were Wayne McLendon,Johnny Westbrook, Mary Emma Blanchard, Joe Bryant Newkirk, .......,. .........., L.. 4-a......,.... --0-..-......,. f.,,....
