Our class officers were Johnny Westbrook, Mary Emma Blanchard, Lucille Balcombe, Mary Ann Jonkheer, and Christine Leimone. Our class had officers in every club and organization in which freshmen could participate. We took pride also in the fact that our class was well represented in all three sports. As a grandfinale to our freshman year in high school, our class boarded the new activity bus one day in the latter part of April and headed for Raleigh. On May 19, 1959, our freshman year came to a close, and three months of long-awaited sum- mer vacation began. In Augustwe returned to our Alma Mater as sophomores. We chose Joe Bryant Newkirk, Hugh Highsmith, Wilma Lee Wright, Johnny Westbrook and Julia Mallard to lead our class. Again this year our class was well represented in the sports field. Members of our class on the football squad were Johnny Westbrook, Joe Bryant Newkirk, Hugh Highsmith, Boyd Benson, Wayne McLendon, David Powers, Alan Jordan, Richard Collins, and Bill George. Sophomores onthe boys' basketball squad were Hugh Highsmith, Joe Bryant Newkirk, Johnny Westbrook, and Wayne McLendon, on the girls' basketball squad were Wilma Lee Wright, Christine Leimone, Ruth Batson, Kay Haynie, Judy Futch, Susie Young, Joyce Herring, and Yvonne Rivenbark. Thus in May of 1960, we completed the first half of our high school career. We began our junior year with fifty-six members in our class. Elected to lead us this year were Wayne McLendon,Johnny Westbrook, Mary Emma Blanchard, Joe Bryant Newkirk, .......,. .........., L.. 4-a......,.... --0-..-......,. f.,,.... -ii: B hill The seniors in Mrs. Futch's homeroom are from left to right, FIRST ROW: Faye Marshburn, Hilda Meadows, Susie Young, Catherine Rivenbark, Kathy Moore, Mary B. We used a western theme for our Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, whichwe all enjoyed very much. As a result of several months of hard work and cooperative effort on the part of the members of the class, we were able to spend a glorious week-end in Washington, D. C. The class raised the necessary funds for this trip by having numerous bake sales, a rummage sale, a barbecue supper, and various other projects. This trip was the highlight of our junior year and a dream come true. Then came our senior year--our last year as a part of Burgaw High School. Elected as our officers were Hugh Highsmith, Joe Bryant Newkirk, Mary Emma Blanchard, Judy Futch, and Julia Mallard. Our Homecoming Queen was Nora Walton with Patsy Deal as her Maid- of-Honor and Alice Mozingo as Senior Representative. On October 31, our class was deeply saddened by the loss of one of our class members, Elna Kaye Best, who was killed in an automobile accident. Our senior representatives on the cheering squad were Mary Emma Blanchard, Patsy Deal, and Joanna Thomson. We are looking forward to the Junior -Senior, the senior play, and then the biggest event of all--graduation! And thus ends our four years at Burgaw High School. We had laid the foundation. Football sea- sonbeganwith the start of school. The team showed great improvement and lots of spirit under the new coach. Homecoming festivi- ties got under way with a giant bonfire and pep rally, followed by the parade and motor- cade. At the big game with Chadbourn, Nora Waltonwas crowned Homecoming queen and Patsy Deal, maid of honor. The season end- ed with a banquet honoring the team and cheerleadersfeaturing Clyde Walker, coach at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, as guest speaker. A highlight for the seniors was getting their class rings. All the underclassmen envyed and admired them. The Future Homemakers of America had their annual initiation day and Mother- Daughter Banquet. Poor initiate s -they practically supplied the high school with candy that day. Christmas would never be c o mp l e t e without the Glee Club concert, and this year was no exception. The music was superb. The end of vacation brought exams and study- ing-even during activity period! With the start of second semester, bas- ketball became the vogue. The teams could play only on Friday and Saturday nights, so everyone went to the games and cheered. The girls won first place in the countyg the boys, third. In addition to the varsity teams, each class had intramural teams which play- ed during activity period. Participants and spectators had a blast. At last the lockers came, giving us a place to keep books and coats. It seemed as if they would never come, but they did. With the coming of spring, the ice cream store became even more popular. It was moved to a new room, and its old quarters turned intoa classroom to be used next year when Long Creek High School consolidates with Burgaw. Almost all of the clubs and classes had projects to raise money. The seniors sold magazines, hemp belts, tickets to the P. T. A. barbeque, and gator pegs g and had a rummage sale. The juniors washed cars and sold magazines. The sophomores and freshmen sold magazines. The Latin Club, the Beta Club, andthe cheerleaders each had bake sales. The Beta Club also had a bar- beque supper. Sounds like a rich school, doesn't it? STUDENT LIFE The J unior-Senior banquet and prom with the theme South Pacific was a big hit. Everyone enjoyed the Senior Play, TIGER HOUSE. All Beta Club members remember the good times at the convention in Raleigh. The end of May brings graduation for the seniors and promotion for everyone else. There are three long months of summer va- cation ahead. Hasn't it been a wonderful year to look back on? 1 4 1 . We, the authors of this Last Will and Testament, for the above reasons, now leave the country. Judy Futch Kay Haynie CLASS PROPHECY TIME: 1980 Hil Here we are at the airport in Los Angeles, California. I am Carolyn Tokoly, secretary to Joe Bryant Newkirk, world famous comedian. We are on our way to Venus where Joe Bryant is scheduled for a performance in a few days. With us is his publicity agent, Mary Emma Blanchard. We are all rather ex- cited because this is our first trip into outer space. We are to travel in one of our newest and fastest rock- ets. We have heard that a lot of our classmates, the twistin class of '62, are now living in Venus, there- fore, we plan to see them before we return to Earth. We haveto hurry now, they are calling the passen- gers to the rocket. As we near the rocket we are sur- prised to see that the stewardess is Barbara Price, a member of our class. She helps us get settled and we are soon on our way. After a few hours, our excite- ment and nervousness is not so great, and we begin to look around at the other passengers. We find that traveling with us are Edwin Pierce and his band. He says that he is playing at the Space-Beat, which hap- pens to be the same place where Joe Bryant will soon entertain. Wetellhim of ourplan to look up our class- mates and he says that one of them is in his band, Johnny Westbrook, his saxaphone player. At this time we see Johnny coming toward us from another part of the rocket. He says that he has been exploring the rocket and has found that our pilots are Charles Wells and Allen Croom. A few hours later Barbara helps us prepare for landing. At last, we are on Venus. We step from the rocket and get our first view of Venus. We have at last proved with our own eyes that there are no little green men living here. We are surprised and pleased to see a very modern city. We immediately establish ourselves at the Hotel Starlight, owned by Miss Deanna Meadows and Sue Wooten. While resting from the trip we glance through anewspaper. We notice that it is owned by Susie Young. Her editor is John.ny Paluck. At this time Lucille Balcombe enters the hotel lobby. We greet her eager- ly. She says she is searching for society news be- cause she is society editor of Susie's newspaper. We ask ifsherknows of any of our classmates living here. She says that Catherine fliittyj Rivenbark and Mrs. James Casteen, the former Betty Brown, are happily marriedand Living near her. She also says if we read a little more of the newspaper we will see another familiar name. We look on the next page and see Christine Leimone's advice column. This does not surprise us because she was another Ann Landers while still in high school. The next day we plarmed to explore the city. We decided Main Street was a good place to start. The first store we see is the Joanna Shop. We go in and find our old friend Joanna Thomson. We are pleased tofind that she is now Mrs. Boyd Benson. She tells us that Boyd has a men's clothing store right next door. We leave her and continue down the street. We then see a Lan ier's Beauty Shop and stop in to see Pauline Lanier. She welcomes us while styling some of the newest space-age hairdos. As we leave the beauty shop the sound of music leads us to the doors of a dancing studio. We wander inside and soon find that the danc- ing instructors are Mary B. Narron and Kay Haynie. They are presently teaching the latest dance sensation, the cosmic hop. PLACE: Planet Earth We stop at the Johnson 81 Johnson Tea Room for lunch and of course find J onnette Johnson and Glenda Johnson. Their waitress are Katie Rae Carter and Kathy Moore. We comment on the good food and are told that Carrie Rowe and Joan Wooten are the cooks. As we leave the tea room we see a large modern school across the street. Since the children are out to lunch recess we decided to look for the teachers and see if we know any of them. We are surprised to find so many of our friends. Sherrie Sherman is teaching the first grade. Judy Futch is teaching math, Julia Mallard, home economics, Patsy Deal, English, and Carol Winborne is the piano teacher. Anita Marsh- burn is the school librarian and she tells us that her sister, Faye Marshburn, is the librarian at the city library. Ruth Batson and Joyce lSamJ Herring are physical education teachers, and David Powers is jan- itor and friend of all the students. Wayne McLendon is the principal of the school and his wife, the former Alice Mozingo, is his secretary. While talking with the teachers we learn that our senior class president, Hugh Highsmith, has recently been elected president of Venus, andtonight a party is being given in his hon- or and we are all invited. When we leave the school, we continue our tour and stop at the hospital. As we enter the quiet cor- ridors, we hear the intercom calling a Dr. Wooten. We stop a group of nurses, who are Nellie Vdovich, Yvonne Rivenbark, and Nora Walton, and they tell us that this doctor is our old classmate, Jerry Wooten. We are now on our way to the party. We want to get there early so that we can speak to the guest of honor before the crowds get to him. The caterers have just arrived. Their boss is Richard Collins. He says it's the best way to get to all the big parties. Working for him are Stoney McCoy and Gary Foy. His bartend- er is Jimmy Spender. At the party we see Bill George, who is a morti- cian. We are glad to see him but will not promise to give him any business while we are here. We find that JohrmyKraynickhas become a stock car driver and he says that to keep in good physical condition he goes to Alex Meeks's Gym. This is the night that Joe Bryant is to perform at the nightclub, Space-Beat. As we enter the night club, the owner comes to greet us personally. He is Bradford Rowe. He leads us to a choice table. While sitting. there before the show Janet Blake and Patsy Flynn en- ter and cause quite a stir in the audience. Both are quite well known. Janet as an authoress and Patsy as a model. We leave for the planet Earth immediately after the show. We buy our tickets from Hilda Meadows and check our luggage with Pearlie Watkins. Our steward- ess on the way back is Gayle Powers. We arrive home safe and sound. We enjoyed our trip to Venus and the renewal of our old friendships, but we are glad to be home. by- Joe Bryant Newkirk Carolyn Tokoly 3 . l Y . . v .11 3 , .
