Academic Subjects Mr. Archie Rouselle Assistant Principal Seniors, you are about to enter the field of your chosen trade or further educa- tion. Always remember that loyalty is the best reward you can give. Through your loyalty to humanity and the training in your trade you are now charged with pro- viding a service, a service to your fellow man so that each individual whom you serve may be happier. May you each be reminded that what is important is not only the performance of the service with the skill and loyalty, but the spirit in which the service is given. LOYALTY TO ALL - SKILLFUL PERFORMANCE AND SERVICE TO GOD AND COUNTRY. THIS IS THE MOTTO OF BURGARD. 5 E l fi fir 1 Peter Koschtschuk Edward Zielonka Treasurer Sergeant-at-Arms lack Martin Marty Hill Vice-President Secretary loseph Kedge President 35 We the graduating class of 1972, take great pride in re- miniscing both the happy and sad moments that we have spent here at Burgard. Our Freshmen year was a year of learning, and as time went on we became more interested and involved in ourschool. The second year marked greater participation in var- ious activities. Bv this time we had all blended into our individual trades, and dis- covered the amazing feats we could perform with our newly gained knowledge. Later in the year our princi- pal Mr. joseph F. Crotty felt ill and the school came un- der the direction of Mr. Archie Rousselle. We leave the school looking for a new 84 better form of education. We are proud of taking a part in the school achievement and helping the school to have a ho- nored name during the past 4 years. We will always re- member the good times we had at Burgard. This school will remain on our mind with the faculty and new friends that we have met during the years we have attended here. We want the underclassmen to keep the faith and stay in the fight and always remember the years of 1971-1972 be- cause, those were the best years the school has ever experienced. K M ff? We remember what we were like and wha we did. Then we look up, at th senior class. There we see what we will be next year. After three years at Burgard we realize that we are in a positon to take the responsibility of the senior class when we step up to that their place on Moving Up Day. 49 Group 301 Row 1: Piatowski, 1, Mann, R5 Aldridge, C5 Mc- Dougled, D, johnson, G. There are only two years to go and hope- fully it will be a happy transition to a new and different world. Gone will be the days of who is first in the cafeteria line or who is first to gym to shoot hoops. We began realizing that those childhood days are now passing and work, education and skills are much more important. 61 ROW 7: Zitnik, A, Burton, T, Ayers, D, Christian, R, Bell, O, Browning, W, Battaglia, S. The task of recording the school's activities dur- ing this period lies in the hands of the yearbook staff. Editor james leffers, facing the problem of inexperi- ence in the system of a new company, sought a staff able to build anew. This enormous cavity was over- come by a coltish desire for work. Organization and education in the fundamentals of producing a year- book, layouts, lithographical typing, and correlation of theme constitute the foundation upon which future girders are erected. Likewise, Business Manager Mr. McPartland and assistant Paul Faltyn were confronted with obstacles which were surmounted through excel- lent organizational blueprint. I'll see your 10 and raise you 15. By winter, the staff had matured under the able hands of Mr. Peters and by spring, more than one snivelling worker had been victimized by severe nervousness and writer's cramp. By mid-March construction was finally completed. This book is an attempt to give the reader an eyewit- ness report of the complicated stages of construction. The report progresses from birth, the Freshman, through growing pains, Sophomores and juniors, to foundation fixtures, extracurriculars, and at last to the finished product, well rounded Seniors. Q X A If this work has instilled a greater awareness and appre- ciation of a high school institution, our building has been successful. J Hm-m-m-mf W -fm. WMM., .. Headed by Mr. Knier, the club held weekly meet- ings, at which time fishing and camping techniques were dis- cussed. A winter hi-lite was the weekend spent at Chataqua Lake, where the club enthusiastically indulged in ice fishing. In May the club went to Scout Haven for a weekend of splendid trout fish- ing. The club at the time of this writing had seventeen paid mem- bers and all members then be- came members of Explorer Post 316. Band The band fell on some hard times this year. Last year's loss of some fine seniors have hurt the club. Yet with the presence of this or- ganization with the assistance of a trained instructor, it is a shameful indictment of the many students who fail to take part of this oppor- tunity. The pur- pose of the council is to discuss prob- lems and develop solutions that effect every city school. This year Burgard was the host school for some meetings. Par- ticular recognition is given to Marty Hill who was elected Inter-High Treasurer. Student council A student council can be a real and practical lesson in democratic govern- ment. The representatives are chosen from each of the roll calls. Their term is for one year, A student chosen by his peers may be proud of his distinction. This honor incidentally, is recorded on his permanent record. Council activi- ties provide lessons in parliamentary procedures as well as other activities vital to an American democracy. Stage crew T Next time you are in an assembly notice the smooth running order of the assembly operation. However the team always gave a good account of itself and morale was always high. The team had a few bright spots. Ron Harge received All-High recognition and Calvin jones ended the season with the distinction of having played for all his four years at the school. Certainly despite the teams weak performance these two men as well as the entire squad receive our endorsements of having put forward a fine account of itself on and off the field. Special considerations is given to Al Freeland, who played inspiring football, despite losses. It was he who led the team to its near stunning upset of mighty Sene- ca. Then how would you explain this, After School Program An ever growing number of ambitious students are attending Burgard's after school program. Not only limited to Burgard students, the program draws boys not only from other high schools but the elementary as well as the parochial schools. Courses are offered in such varied areas as welding, collision work, engine maintainance and repair, electrical repair, engine tune-up and many others. The program is not only limited to the immediate after school students. There is an adult education program in basic and advanced auto repair. Course offerings are of a very practical service with the ever rising auto repair bills. Interestingly, there are some college graduates taking courses. This past summer a program was conducted, which was a significant success. Besides the auto repair courses, a popular course was the motorcycle repair course. An outstanding course was offered to some enterprising students by Mr. Robert Redfern. The aviation course, prepared students for the written portion of the private pilot's examination. Upon achieving success in this test,a student was well on his way for obtaining his pilots license. Thus it should be said that Burgard offers students many outlets for creative ambitions, desires and energies, and students applying themselves can learn many practical and beneficial skills now and in later life. ll ' PS5 as' 'X 5? The first Mr. Coe was a former teacher during the 1930's and 1940's. He was very instrumental in developing and maintaining the aviation program in Burgard. Aviation at that time was not heralded as it is today, so Mr. Coe was far- sighted to realize the impending significance of the aviation field. Mr. Clabeau was one of our beloved substitute teachers. At a time when youth is being served, it was good to see an elderly man as Mr. Cla- beau have such magnetic appeal with both teachers and students. Mr. Lang meanwhile was known by most students. He too will be sorely missed. A metic- ulous man in his instructions and assignments, Mr. Lang was deeply interested in seeing students suc- ceeding. Often they didn't realize how much he was interested. For example Mr. Lang conducted the program among faculty members in sending stu- dents to witness the Golden Gloves matches. All three will be indeed missed among our ranks. As part of this book's feeling, we ask students to stop and reflect for a moment on their lives and to learn from them how we can better understand our own lives.
