A MOST UNFORGET TABLE IWAN For any school to be great, for any institution to survive, it must have a leader. He is a man who can make the hard deci- sion and be responsible for it, the easy decision and laugh about it, the quick decision and admit the mistake if necessary. He is a man who is friendly with everyone, but after walks alone, who is willing to discuss your problems, but must after solve his own without advice. With a leader a school survives and pros- persg its present is happy, its future assured. Joseph Crotty was such a man. Burgard can look back with pride to having had him as its leader. 5 TODAY Here at Burgard the faculty is deeply QM TOMORROW The last twenty years in American education has witnessed a .qgamatic accent on academic and college preparatory pursuits. the demands of society have put greater and greater schools for the improvement of its youth, this neglected the development of skills. by an ever expanding at Burgard this is given full the automobile and avia- . What you are stands over you the while, and thun- ders so that I can not hear what you say to the contrary . 20 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS-Fl. Bucci, Treasurerf J. Smith, Secretary,' A. Walton, Vice-President, V Franko, President, A. Jamieson, Sergeant-at-Arms. SENIOR PERSPECTIVE When your last year of High School rolls along, you are faced with the dif- ficulty of making a decision that means your whole future. We, the gradu- ating Class of 1971, feel that Burgard has done its best in fulfilling the re- quirements of our decision. For the previous four years, our dedicated teachers and administration have given us all they were capable of, sharing both their knowledge and personal experiences. As Freshmen, we were faced with a period of adjustment. Our whole lives were placed in a new environment where so many situations played against each other for priority. These were trying times. Then too, there was the death of the highly respected member of the faculty, Mr. Thomas McCarthy. Upon our return to Burgard for a second year, things seemed to change almost like magic. The summer months appeared to give us that extra bit of confidence we needed to face school once again. There were changes with- in the structure itself, the moving of the printing department to McKinley. As Sophomores too, we experienced another Burgard first , for that was the year of the winter carnival. Our Junior year entailed a lot of growing up. We reached the realization that half of our high school career had been concluded. Our last year was extremely darkened by the loss of our beloved principal, Mr. Joseph Crotty. His patience guided us through so much. After spending four enlightening stimulating years at Burgard, we find very little regret, and can only hope that subsequent graduating classes find this fine school as rewarding. 21 ADAMSKI, RUSSELL ALEXANDER, JOHN ALLEN, RICHARD A VIA TION A U TOMOBILE AUTOMOBILE Aviation Explorers 1 Automobile Explorers Rifle CIub1 AUDA, DAVID BADER, CHARLES BADER, DENISS AUTOMOBILE AUTOMOBILE AUTOMOBILE 22 BASS, KESSLER AUTOMOBILE Cafeteria Monitors Student Council J. POS T GRADUA TES The Post-Graduate program at Burgard is de- signed to give students who return, a more in- tricate understanding of aviation. The students who attend this fifth year and complete it, re- ceive their Tickets , or their airframe and pow- erplant mechanics license. This year the program has 28 members, ea- ger to work their way to succeed in life. These young men, some former members of Burgard have chosen to return and further their knowl- edge. After completing their fifth year, the PG's take an A.F.A. exam. 48 OF 1971 lf they pass the written exam, they take the other parts of it such as the oral and practical parts. This year the PG's were honored by being able to wear Blue Jackets, which are also worn by the teachers in the Aviation Department. The student body has now become accustomed to seeing these men in their blue jackets. Thanks to this year's 1970-71 PG's, future post-gradu- ates of Burgard will wear their Blue Jackets with the pride and dignity of these men. We of Bur- gard wish to YOU, the Post-Graduates of 1970-71, our hope for your success in the avia- tion field. 49 Left to Right, Top to Bot- tom-ROW 1: T. Stellrecht, Ft Caccotti, G. Mingle, D. JUNIGFK CLASS HISTORY We the Junior Class of this year 1971, know that we have been through a great deal since 1968. We have gone through our Freshman and Sophomore years in wonder as to how we would be treated by teachers and up- perclassmen. We were treated as upperclassmen, as we wanted to be, by our action and behavior. The years have passed and we the Juniors of 1971 can be in wonder no more. For we are now upperclassmen. Now we look forward to the year of being the upperclassmen of all up- perclassmen a. , .SENlOFl! 51 , K H. 5- H , , , 1 .1 ' Q 'if' gt at gf y 1 t g- lay, ji ,X . . K- 4. ROW1: R. PoIIanz,T. This is our first year at Burgard Vocational and as in preceding Freshmen classes everything about this school is still strange to us. We, like the Fresh- men classes before us feel that we are on the bottom of the pile, we feel that we must serve our term as the new members of the Burgard Family. We are also very proud of them, and many other students l'm sure have learned from their interests and dedication to the school. Rooks, knights, and checkmates are terms which don't mean a lot to some, but to some of our aspiring in- tellectuals, the game of chess brought as much keen competition to the par- ticipants as some of our sports. Mr. Klimchuk was the king this year. The chess team under his tutelage was checkmated and checkmated a number of schools. Among them were Bishop Turner, Seneca, Hutch-Tech, Canisius and Kensington. Club members were exposed to the use and operation of many types of cameras as well as the operation of dark- room equipment. Special problem solving sessions were held when the club went on field trips to near-by locations. This years club membership held the interest of several underclassmen and shows promise of capable participation for years to come. VOCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL CLUB OF AIVIEFIICA The Vocational Industrial Club of America, VICA, is a national youth organization Preparing youth for Lead- ership in the World of Work. The primary function of the Burgard Chapter is to render services to our school and to the community. Projects such as our annual toy drive in connection with the United States Marine Corps and our display on narcotics are two of our more recent accomplishments. In conjunction with the Industrial relationship, members participate in three or four planned field trips each year to actually observe the Wheels of lndustry in Motion. There are several fundamental principles and pur- poses of our organization. They are, as quoted from the official guide and handbook, iiTo unite in a common bond all students enrolled in trade and industrial education. i'iTo develop leadership abilities through participation in educational, vocational, civic, recreational, and social activities. i'To foster a deep respect for the DIGNITY OF WORK. ifTo assist students in establishing realistic vocational goals. 92 ifTo help students attain a purposeful life. ifTo create enthusiasm for learning. ifiTo promote high standards in trade ethics, work- manship, scholarship and safety. ifTo develop the ability of students to plan together, or- ganize and carry out worthy activities and projects through use of the democratic process. ii:To foster a wholesome understanding of the functions of labor and management organizations and a recogni- tion of their mutual interdependence. ii'To create among students, faculty members, patrons of the school and persons in business and labor a sin- cere interest in and esteem for trade, industrial, and technical education. TTO develop patriotism through a knowledge of our Na- tion's heritage and the practice of DEMOCRACY. Mr. Dominic Catalano should receive special thanks for his many accomplishments. VARSITY This year, once again the Burgard Bulldogs played a hard fought season. Although the team didn't win any games, the team gained experience. Our first game was against East High School. Following a scoreless first half, East came up with a touchdown late in the third quarter. But Burgard fought on and scored a touchdown. Score: 8 to 6, East. Once again Burgard pushed on and scored, Score: 12 to 8, Burgard. Then with 54 seconds left to play East scored a touchdown and won the game 16 to 12. The next game was against Tech, and the Bulldogs came out on the short end again, 12 to O. After two losses, it was hoped we would jump up annd surprise the opposition, but as it turned out the strong Bennett team defeated us by a score of 30 to 0. Our next game was against our rival Seneca, who were also the defending Harvard Cup Cham- pions. Burgard lost a bruising battle, the score was 46 to 14. With four games lost, it seemed that maybe we wouldn t disappoint the fans after all. But once again the Bulldogs lost a terrific defen- sive battle against Grover Cleveland from League I The score was 16 to O. Our last game, against Kensington was hard fought, but in vain, we lost. The score was 26 to 6. As in seasons of the past the football team wishes to thank all those who attended games. Mr. Garcea and Mr. Banas who were the coaches would like to thank everyone for coming and watching the games. Coach Guariglia's team ended their season with a no win-eleven loss record. The cause of this was mainly due to the fact that we were overpowered by the competition's fantastic running ability. When the season started, stated Mr. Guariglia, we were hurting so much for candidates, we almost didn't have a team to enter in the first meet. With the upcoming season coming up, Coach Guariglia hopes to see some eligible candidates coming out for the Cross Country team. Lets not disappoint Mr. Guariglia all you eligible runners. Go out there next September and pour it on. Show the world Burgard Vocational High School is still the best. 113 THEIR LAST LAP As it is usually the case, a team can not have the same men running forever. This is also true in the case of our Cross Country team. This year we are loosing three hard working and hard running individuals. These men are H. L. Lewis, Jr. Graham, and R. Bucci. The sound of cletes striking home plate were far and in between on last year's Bulldog baseball team. The runs were just not there much to Coach Guariglia's chagrin. Howeverthe team should produce more effectively despite last year's won one, lost eight record. Building on an upcoming nucleus veterans and some energetic first year men, the team should be much im- proved. We'd like to see this year's team become the Grand Slam! 116 '5 f fi fi kxxh Vzghy Eig ixyl L:'Ll i i .. , If i , E y n,w'1f'mn X- , i +2 ,M-, My Y ' ,fl hifi K I f ive is E 'i 3? y 11- n... is R a is' if 1 V -' -gig-'-.M .if .2-Q15-ggi : ., n,kM,,,k my , W at ' wi H V V I did not know they played in a cage. . ...I , - I 'F I E L X 'Sf 1 uf' 4. Because most of the candidates were newcomers this year, the team did not chalk up many wins. Although the team had plenty of enthusiasm, they were hindered somewhat by the lack of inspiration by their fellow stu- dents. The discouraging, but the boys refused to give up. Mr. Banas, the team coach, feels confident that a larger turnout of tennis candidates would have meant victory for our team. He hopes that more Burgard students will join the squad in April 119 X X XX X fx 'QN 'X' f N KX X ,f !-'f XX t X, X 5 Q Xffaqv f N ' , w X' W Q X Xff?iQJ fV.XAf A ff XR XXV4' X X1 3943!
