You are America's seed. Your education has been part of your growth care. As Hedglings and young adults, the time for new decisions by you has reached a culmination point. Reflect if you will on some possible aims and goals. Join up with the militant protesters, cast your lot with the non-vocal majority or seek desired changes through legislative channels via your elected representatives. In these days of rapid-fire movements how can one predict in November what influences will be active in June. Catch words and phrases have always appealed to the masses. Shall we support MLaw and Order , Peace and Tranquility , uSearch Out and Destroy , Revolt and Overthrow . Where will your course lie? History records periods of chaos out of which emerged leaders. What are their titles? Tribal chief, king, benevolent despot, dictator, tyrant '? What are their names? Pharoah, Richard III, Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin ? Your government, imperfect but elastic, provides for orderly change by due process of law. Tread carefully lest your youthful impatience and frustration lead down a path to anarchy and then tyranny. Strike a blow for the dignity of all men, equal opportunities, truth in govern- ment, pronouncements and actions, elimination of favoritism and waste. Oust the rascals. Upon entering Burgard as freshmen we faced a com- pletely different phase of learning. The atmosphere of a new school, new teachers, and new subjects made our fresh- men year a very trying one. The tragic event of the death of the Automobile Department Chairmen, Mr. Rob- erts left our freshmen year at a tragic note. In September of 1967 we returned after the short sum- mer vacation with a little more confidence than in our freshmen year. The surroundings were familiar to us, the expectations of the teachers, the courses and ourselves were becoming more familiar and we began to set our goals on 23 what we wanted to do in the future. As we returned in September for the Junior year we were all filled with the spirit and felt the pride of being upper- classmen, This year was the first year for the annual Winter Carnival, which everyone enjoyed. Later in the year our esteemed principal Mr. Joseph Crotty felt ill and the school came under the direction of Mr. Archie Rousselle. Finally we are Seniors, and the leaders of the school. We all look back and realize how much we have gained at Bur- gard. We look forward to graduation and to reaching our goals that we have worked hard to get. The Graduating Class of 1970 would like to thank the faculty and each of the many persons who have contributed to making our days at Burgard happy and successful. The Post Graduate Program at Burgard Vocational High School is a fifth year course of study for those aviation students who wish to get their Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic's License . We the Junior Class of Burgard Vocational High School feel that we have come a long way since the Fall of 1967. In September of 67 we came to Burgard with timidness and sometimes fear of what high school life would be like. The school, teachers and upperclassmen added to this anxiety and gave us the feeling that we were in fact the babies of Burgard. When we returned after that long lirst year we felt that we were on more solid ground. We had many friends, the building was familiar, and we knew many of the teachers, but before we knew it our high school career was half over. Now we our Juniors-upperclassmen at last. We are begirming to see the light at the end of our four year high school career. We feel that we are ready to take over the leadership of the school. One way of completing this task is to offer the students a variety of organizations whose purpose it is is to give the student who is willing to exert himself a chance to learn something other than in a classroom situation and also a chance to contribute to the atmosphere of Burgard. It is on the shoulders of the Craftsmen staff that most of the responsibility lies. Led by able and qualified Seniors, these boys spent innumer- able hours working on this yearbook. The people who have worked on this years yearbook deserve the appreciation of the entire school. To speak of one boy is unfair, but every team has its heros. Ervin Cummings, while a very active student in other fields always held his responsibility of yearbook leader- ship above all other activities. As Editor of this years yearbook, Ervin Cummings a third year man has done an excellent job in both the development and the ac- tual work behind it. Douglas Goston, also a third year man on the staff, served as patron editor, besides pa- trons he did a fine job in the guidance of the new members. Walter Shannon who participated in many varsity athletics, was a great help to our Sports Sec- tion. Casey Czamara was the typist this year and should look forward to the years to come. Gary Von Hasseln a freshman, did a terrific job on the layout of the book. These are only part of the staff and other boys deserve as much recognition John Juskiewicz, Ed Manhart, Harold Hicks, David Magara, and David Gorzynski contributed to the production of this book. The Yearbook Staff also had a group of faculty members whose time and effort were indispensible. Under the guidance and great supervision of Mr. McPartland, we frantically met the deadlines to Hnish our work with the satisfaction of making a contribution to the school. There are eighteen band members this year and this puts a lot of pressure on all eighteen members. Burgard is proud to have an All High Band member in the band CKenneth McClurej. We also have band members who have been recommended to play in the All High Band, Donald Crawford, Steven Daniels, Eijah Pratt, and A. C. Grable. The Burgard Band is made of many Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. So in the future years this band should be one of the best around and with the support of Burgard students and teachers there is no reason why this should not happen next year. We here at Burgard feel that we offer a wide variety of sports so that every student large or small can participate in our Sports. Although the boys on the team did their best, the injuries and other problems proved to be just too much for the team. One factor which added to the failure of the team this year was the poor attendance at the games. If more students would come to the games and cheer the team on, the team would have more reason to win. Although the Bulldogs were O-6 we would like to thank the football team for a tremendous effort. A special vote of thanks for Coach Garcea and Coach Banas who year after year try to perfect the talents of the up and coming stars. Acedevo, The Burgard 1969 Track Club had an outstanding season, iinishing in Iifth place. Their determination was shown at the meets as they placed high in the final stand- in s. iurgard had outstanding performers this year. One was Jackie Smith in the 880 who started out as a freshman and in his sophomore year did an excellent job. He placed first in most of his meets and sometimes second. Another one is Richard Gay, Richard was gifted with the ability to run, and he did just that. He ran the 440 and long jumped and placed high in both. And there is Moses Graham who was running track for his iirst year. Moses ran the 880 with Jackie and between the two he would either come in first or second. There are many more that must be congratulated and should be. Although we did not place well this year, Mr. Guariglia, the coach of the Cross Country team, is hopeful that next year Burgard will enter the winning column. The 1969 Tennis season for Burgard was a year of inexperience and misfortune. Because most of the candi- dates were newcomers this year, the team did not chalk up many wins. Although the team had plenty of enthu- siasm, they were hindered somewhat by the lack of in- spiration on the part of their fellow students. The results were discouraging, but the boys refused to give up. Mr. Banas, the team coach, feels confident that a larger turn- out of Tennis candidates would have meant victory for our team. He hopes that more Burgard students will take an interest in Tennis and join the squad in April. Size, talent, determination, and bench depth were the necessary ingredients Burgard Opponent that Burgard's team possessed while posting a successful season with 9 wins 49 Bennett 48 and 4 losses. With this record Burgard was able to qualify for the Section VI, 53 Riverside 66 Class AAAA playoffs, something new for Buffalo schools this year. The team 75 Grover Cleveland 61 captained by Derrick Powell and Paul Edwards finished third in final Yale 63 McKinley 49 Cup standing. 46 Lafayette 44 Paul Edwards 6'2 , wound up as the teams leading scorer. He had great 93 South Park 65 touch from the outside and was a great help underneath both the offensive and 57 Seneca 43 defensive boards. Edwards was known for his outside shots and his quick 60 Kensington 7l hands. No zone, or man to man could contain Edwards. 52 Hutch Tech 75 Derrick Powell 6'2 , was up until the teams seventh game the leading 64 East 7l rebounder and second leading scorer. He obtained a shoulder injury which 66 Emerson 55 caused him to sit out the next four games, but returned afterwards. Powell was 64 Bennett 56 a great driver with adequate touch from the outside. He also possessed great 79 Riverside 61 body control which he demonstrated in making difficult shots. Our center Gordon Plummer a senior commonly known as Skyhawk was gifted with great jumping ability. Although not a great point producer, Plum- mer intimidated opposition by blocking a good number of sure shots. H. L. Lewis a junior, was the key man in Burgard's zone defense and press. Lewis was also the team's playmaker, in which he possessed a great knack of unselfishness toward his fellow teammates. Burgard is looking forward to seeing H. L. Lewis next year. Joe Scott also a junior, is a clutch player with a scent for following the ball. Scott provided the team with a more than adequate point production, and also, even though a guard, contributed some big rebounds. But even the other members of the team should be recognized such as Eugene Jones, Wilbur Hooks, Fate Harris and Elroy Knight. THE NEGRO MOTHER by Langston Hughes Children, I come back today To tell you a story of the long dark way That I had to climb, that I had to know In order that the race might live and grow. Look at my face-dark as the night- Yet shining like the sun with love's true light. I am the child they stole from the sand Three hundred years ago in Africa's land. I am the dark girl who crossed the wide sea Carrying in my body the seed of the free. I am the woman who worked in the field Bringing the cotton and the corn to yield. Remember my years, heavy with sorrow- And make of those years a torch for tomorrow. Make of my past a road to the light Out of the darkness, the ignorance, the night. Oh, my dark children, may my dreams and my prayers Impel you forever up the great stairs- For I will be with you till no white brother Dares keep down the children of the Negro mother THE VILLAGE BLACKSMITH by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Under a spreading chestnut-tree The village smithy stands, The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands, And the muscles of his brawny arms Are strong as iron bands. Thus at the flaming forge of life Our fortunes must be wrought, Thus on its sounding anvil shaped Each burning deed and thought! WE MUST BECOME BLACKINIZED by Dwayne Donovant by A pride for black in which colored folks lack, It's a fact which supports the generation gap' Now determination we must strive, In order to keep together and stay alive, We must become Blackinized. r Instead of trying to rob and kill each other, Stay together let's be brothers, The man's so happy to see you fight, He goes around looking for trouble every night. If you're not hip to this, please take note, And don't be called colored folks, You must be strong, healthy and free, For we must be brothers to strive for liberty. Don't say it's too fast, your wrong it's too late, Only a fool can wait for freedom at this late date, For freedom now you will receive peace at last, In order to create a more glorious past. Because in time we will survive, If all us brothers become Blackinized, You know what we do is right, You Negroes and colored people your a strike. Now let's show the man that we are bold, Because we are the young and not the old, And that's what makes us twice as bold, Like I said we will survive, But we all must become Blackinized.
