CROTTY Principal 1948-1969 2 GR DU TE OF 1969 After four years of exposure to an educating experience that included a broad enviromental area with just and dedicated teachers, you are about to emerge into an adult society threatening to burst its seams from internal discontent. You have seen your country entangled in a war without prospects of a military victory yet one which has cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars. This war, illegal to some, unjust to some, has created extensive areas of dissension. Some say we are moving into an area of two distinct societies, black and white, separate and unequal, A new president, a new leader of all Americans became the captain of the ship the United States of American in January. His responsibilities become ours. His programs to right wrongs, by ridding our country of the insidious evils of segregation in schools, housing, job discrimination, unfair military draft practices, corruption in government and the Spoils System must have your support. I prophesy that within a relatively short time the election of our president by the outmoded system of presidential electors will be repealed, that the voting age will be lowered to eighteen and that the squalid badness found in the poverty stricken areas and ghettos will be attacked by the might of an outraged populace and with the aid and guidance of an enlightened and determined corps of governmental leaders, and the almighty, will be diminished and eventually destroyed. Perhaps then we will again move into the beckoning space age, brother with brother, black and white, northerner and southerner, American and Russian to a world federation of peace and tranquility. Sincerely Your Principal and friend, 3 MR. ARCHIE ROUSSELLE Assistant Principal 1962-1969 The Burgard student is better equipped than ever to cope with the rapid changes of the Space Age. Perhaps in very few other educational institutions has it been necessary for student and faculty to adapt themselves to changes in curriculum and physical plant. Our graduates of 1969 have been offered an expanded curriculum and have capitalized in an enriched program. In the past four years we have added two New Math course, Physics, Spanish, Small Engine Repair and a Terminal Welding Course. In the Physical Structure of our Building we have added four new classrooms and an additional shop, In the summer of 1968 we conducted our first summer school for credit, allowing students to both enrich their background as well as receive credit for deficiencies in shop and drawing. The willingness of the Burgard Student to accept the challenge and enrich his backround has been rewarding to the student and because of this willingness greater numbers of Burgard Students are being accepted in advanced studies than in the past. 4 - .Q X i 5 ,i - X 3 , Q S? f i s iil f X e i Mr. Crotty addressing the student body X:-r in W ' 5.44 It's a beautiful day I NN, s..f Mr. Crotty and Mr. Hoffman inspecting a diesel engine Mr Roussclia, giving, lnstructions to a substitute teacher MR CHRISTIAN HOFFMAN Automobile Department Chairman AVIATIO DEP RT E The Aviation Department this year celebrates it's Silver Jubilee Anniversary as a certified school under the Federal Aviation Administration. Never in the history of Burgard has there been better opportunities for Aviation Graduates to enter into well paying jobs in this giant world of transportation. Updating both equipment and curriculum is a never ending task. Administration and the Board of Education is attempting to keep pace with all changes. This means that students of this program must also rise to the challenge with efforts to achieve excellence in their chosen field. As future mass transportation moves into the sky the demands for technically trained people on the ground must grow. Future Burgard Aviation Graduates will help fill this need. AUTGMOBILE DEPARTME T The Automobile lndustry has progressed in an amazing manner throughout the twentieth century. Passenger cars, trucks, and busses have been improved so rapidly that it is necessary to offer new models each year, and no one doubts that this search for perfection will continue in the foreseeable future. If an automobile mechanic is to be successful he is obliged to study each new mechanical principle and it's current application. He never has his trade learned. It is not a vocation for one who is lazy physically or mentally, but he who applies himself will find the rewards gratifying. The Burgard faculty, and it's facilities are geared to help each student meet the challenge of a changing industry and a changing world. Apply yourself in all your studies and activities so that you will have the background, skill, and stamina to succeed. nillf 'it Q atrium ali iii 115'-if-it Q? .tt 4-.:.'S:::f. Our freshman year was a year of learning, and as time went on we became more interested and involved in our school. September came all too soon and once again the school was filled with life and vigor. Tragedy marred that year with the death of a great man who dedicated most of his life for Burgard, Mr. William Roberts, Chairman of the Automobile Department. When we returned as Juniors everything was looking great. We felt secure and felt Burgard had a lot to offer. Then tragedy suddenly struck our school once again by the death of Mr. Thomas McCarthy, a very dedicated teacher. Now that we are Seniors and leaders of the school, we realize what Burgard has done for us. We are looking forward to graduation and will be seeking the goals which Burgard has prepared us for. We the Graduating Class of 1969 would like to thank the teachers and many other people who have contributed to our knowledge and skills. 19 ,.. ,AW l ALBRECHT, JEROME AVIATION Bowling Club Rifle Club Library Staff Aviation Explorers Monitors Chess Club Merit Club Football J.V, Football Baseball Hall Monitors Model Club AYERS, EMERY AUTOMOBILE Bulletin Glee Club Monitors Automobile Explorers Inter High Student Council Class Officers Student Council Officers Honor Roll Basketball Intermural Basketball Intermural Track Hall Monitors Student Council Q 5 ANDO, FRED ANDO, SAMUEL AUTOMOBILE AVIATION Monitors Rifle Club Honor R011 Model U.N. The Aviation Department this year in connection with its Post Grad- uate program is celebrating its 25th Anniversary as a certified school under the Federal Aviation Agency. Burgard would like to congratulate the Aviation Department and its Post Graduates and wish them both more success in the Future. 45 BOTTOM: J. Juczkiewicz-Secretary, M. Sullivan-Vice-President TOP: G. Gabel-Treasurer, C. White!President. Do you remember when you were a freshmen? It doesn't seem like three years ago does it. During those three years the Juniors of 68-69 should have many things to remember for a long time to come. In our Freshmen year we were considered the babies of the school. Everything was so exciting and new to us, the assemblies, bowling club, weight lifting, wrestling, stage crew, band and judo, and other things we had never seen before. We made many new friends and were introduced to new subjects. ln our Sophomore year, we felt more important in school because we were in our second year. We were presented with lots of new teachers. We became more interested in sports and many members of our Sophomore class participated in them. Finally, our Junior year is here. Just to think we are the second highest in class made it exciting. A large portion of the athletes were Juniors. Other members of the Junior class participated in other various activities offered by the school, some even in academic areas. S0 you see we Juniors have had a good and successful three years at Burgard, and hope that our last year will be as promising. 47 GROUP 301 M ., f X, Ni' . - - - : X : - f N ROW 1: J. Wofford, H. Burgard offers to the students a variety of activities both during school hours and after school hours. The student who becomes involved in these activities is better off for the time and effort that he has placed in the activity of his choice. Most students who do become involved in an activity de- velop a deeper appreciation for what the school is trying to do for him. The activities that the school offers range from individual activities such as Chess to group efforts such as Band. The student who becomes involved makes Burgard what it is, the student who does not become involved, who looks at Burgard as a place to stay from 8:30 to 3:00 has not taken advantage of Burgard, its Faculty or its Facilities. To the student we invite you to join our activities and become a part of your school. 77 Ki ROW 1 Ed Manhart, Howard Powell, Ervin Cummings, Robert Marbry, Douglas Goston John Juszkiewicz. CRAFTSMAN STAFF This year as in the past the Craftsman Staff hopes that it has produced one of the best yearbooks that Burgard has had. The entire Craftsman Staff has worked very hard this year and much experience was gained which will help us in future Craftsman editions. The people who have worked on this years book deserve the appreciation of the entire school. Ervin Cummings who is this years editor has done an excellent job in both the development of the book and the actual work behind it. Ervin Cummings was supported by a very loyal staff without whose help the yearbook would not have been published. Robert Marbry whose typing ability has helped considerably, David Jacobs who wrote the sports section and will be a big loss to the yearbook next year since he is a senior. Howard Powell has helped during the picture taking and Douglas Goston has made sure that the yearbook was a financial success. These of course are only part of the staff and the other boys deserve as much recognition, Walter Shannon, John Juskiewiacz, David Stewart, Ed Manhart, Anthony Williams, Ken Brown, Ronald Maracle, and Robert Thompson, John Stamates, Richard Lasota. The Yearbook Staff also had a group of faculty members whose time and efforts were indispensible. Mr. O,Toole did an outstanding job on photography, Mr. Cosgrove substi- tuting for the ill Mr. Sherman did an excellent job on the patrons. Special recognition should be given to Mr. Mathein who has given unofficial assistance to the yearbook and helped us stay out of trouble. Also, a special thanks to Mr. Visone who has come to our assistance with art Work. The one drawback that this yearis yearbook had to face was the inexperience of most of the staff. The staff would like to thank the faculty and students for their constructive criticism and we hope that we have included everyone. 78 Middle: Ervin Cummings-Editor. Senior halfback Calvin Silmon ran for two touchdowns and the defense held the Knights to eighty-five yards total offense. In the next game the overspirited Burgard team suffered a great loss against Ben- nett. The third game against East, Burgard won by a narrow margin. Again Calvin Silmon scored on a long run. Burgardis defense held the East team three times within their own ten yard line. After a long week of hard practice Burgard had plans to improve their air attack. In the next game against South Park, Bulldog's quarterback Dennis Rosolowski threw a bomb to end Richard Frazier on the first play from scrimmage. Later in the game Silmon ran twenty-seven yards for a touchdown. The day of the Burgard- Tech game, one of the hardest fought games of the season, had at last arrived. This game decided whether Burgard would stay in the race for the League II Title. In the first quarter, Tech got the lead on Burgard, but the oversparked Bulldogs came back with a Rosolowski-Frazier combina- tion to tie the score. At half-time Tech led 14-7. Following half-time Tech scored again. Early in the fourth period, fullback David Jacobs scored Burgard,s last touchdown. At the end of the Burgard-Tech game Burgard's backs David Jacobs, Calvin Silmon, and Robert Kerr were in the top ten in rushing. Burgard lost 29-14. In the final game against Burgard,s arch-rival Seneca, the Bulldogs suffered a defeat 6-0. We would like to thank the football team for the good job they did this year. 106 ROW 1: B. Berry, A. The team played well and some of the games were pretty close. Emery Ayers, Burgard's best, was named All-High with an average of 20.5 points per game. He posted fine playing all season and his style was of professional rating. His sharp eye had him swishing baskets from all sides of the court. Dennis Rosolowski played fine ball through- out the whole season and dazzled many opponents with his good shots. Derrick Powell with his long stretch knocked down many sure baskets. Powell should be looking better next season. Forest Richardson had a very good season pulling down a lot of rebounds. He had his opponents taking ground passes, because there was no getting over his hands. Louis Carrion played his last season with skill. Though not a high scorer, he came up with many precious interceptions. Louis was fast, played well, and showed good sportsman- ship. Louis was without a doubt one of Bur- gard,s most valuable players. Gordon Plummer didn't see too much of the action this year but with his ability to leap he will be threat to next years opponents. Paul Edwards played almost a part of each game this season. He has a good set shot and will be even better next season. Congratulations to Coach Banas and his team for a fine season. This year's events fore- cast a championship team next year. Flading CROSS COUNTY Coupled with the graduation of Burgard's All-High runner Russell Gaiter and the transfer of the Printing Department to McKinley, the 1968 Cross Country team was left in an emaciated state. Our team was left third in the entire city in 1967 and found itself at the bottom of the heap after the season closed. Sad consolation but the fact remains, now that we are on the bottom, there is only one direction in which we can go and that is up. With some help from the students body we are hoping that Burgard will again take it's rightful place in the top bracket of the cities public school Cross Country League. 116 -. O' :SQ 1' ' f, , X . Bob Kraft a graduated Senior boosted the team,s moral and displayed good style with the will to win. The boys practiced hard under the fine leadership of Mr. Goatseay. Next season, most of the team is returning and the prospects for the next year are pretty good. Burgard was a formidable threat for the Scalp and Blade Trophy but due to the defeat by East and Bennett we finished third in all round competition. Coach Garcea commented that some of our boys had a good chance for All-High Honors, but due to some disturbances at All-High Stadium the All-High meet was canceled. Burgard had outstanding performers this year. One is Jerry Spates in the 880 who was formerly of the record breaking 880 relay. He lost only to East and Bennett. His running mates were Harold Shelton and Jackie Smith who also did a good job. Cornelius Redden did an excellent job pole vaulting losing to only one opponent. In the mile Russell Gaiter had one of the best seasons times missing All-High by two seconds. We have hopes for Louis Carrion and Ken Bryant in the hurdles who could well take it next year. Other outstanding teammates are Arthur Williams, Robert Wilson, of the 880 relay, and Richard Gay of the 440. After a shaky start the boys finally achieved a 4 and 5 record but more important learned the valuable lesson of all for one and one for alll,-they either all won or all lost. Without the support of the student body in the patron drive the yearbook would not be published and so, we wish to thank those students who have bought or sold a patron and hope that next year we will get even more support from them. The faculty members who have given of their time are also thanked. The Craftsman staff hopes that this Yearbook 68-69 represents Burgard and hope that next year we will be able to do an even better job. 135 AUTOGRAPHS V,,,,w.. ..,, , ,,,,.,:q,51 ,.,f,i.f7 , ,,,1M,31g,yE, .L 'H W A . ,.., ,W- fvqgw .W Amflmw'
