The Senior Class And Craftsman Staff take pride in Presenting to you the CRAFTSMA if Q w t L M 'L foo X Skin ' 1968 BURGARD VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 400 Kensington Avenue Buffalo, New York MR. JOSEPH F. CROTTY Principal 2 GRADUATE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1968 The end of the school year 1967-1968 will very likely be the end of an era for Burgard as it was originally conceived. As with progressive business, modernization, of equipment, mer- gers of related units and a building program to keep pace with changing needs are part of a new pattern for Vocational Education in Buffalo. Our Printing curriculum will be terminated here in June 1968 and will be a segment of a broad Graphic Arts Program embodying our course of study plus industrial design, art layout and similar Graphic Arts subdivisions, all to be consolidated at the new McKinley Vocational High School. The curriculum planning committee of the Buffalo Board of Education have deemed it economically unwise to enlarge our present facilities so that it is entirely likely that in time a new school will be the future home of our Aviation and Automobile departments. It is the current thinking of our curriculum planners that Burgard will continue to service the needs of our community as conditions warrant. We hope that you have profited by your stay here. If your teachers have contributed to the molding of your character to take your proper place in society, if you have attained the academic and vocational skills to permit you to have a full satisfying life socially and econ- omically, then we have done our job. From our experience, it is safe to say that you will meet disappointments along the way of life that will tend to discourage you. Youth, however, is elastic and from these disappoint- ments you will unquestionably bound back and your resolute character thus strengthened will be better able to withstand and overcome future problems you must inevitably meet. My personal best wishes go with you. Come back to visit and tell us of your progress in life. We hope Burgard Will Always have cordial associations in your hearts. Sincerely your Principal and Friend. MM V l MR. w1LuAM ROBERTS November 23, 1903-May 12, 1967 IN MEMORIAM A mere book is all we have to dedicate, to one who has dedicated his entire life to the cause of vocational educationg a cause that is acknowledged by this Annual. Notwithstanding, we, the 1968 Craftsman Staff, and the Senior Class of 1968 with every ounce of pride we have. . . dedicate this 1968 Burgard Craftsman to the late MR. WILLIAM H. ROBERTS, former Automobile Chairman of Burgard Vocational High School. 4 AN UNFORGETTABLE MAN We the students at Burgard can and will never forget the moments we shared with Mr. Roberts. From the moment we entered Burgard each of us shared a numerous happy moment brought on by that great guy William Roberts. When Mr. Roberts passed away he took a portion of Burgard with him. As you can see by the pictures he was quite an active person and hardly anything went on Without his many ideas to make it better. All we can say is that may GOD BLESSH Mr. Roberts since Burgard will never be the same without him. 5 Eugene Walczak Peter Pucak Joseph Kot-Printing Chairman Burgard Grad teaching others An interested printer Being taught the right way to print 6 BURGARD PRINTING DEPT. Printing, one of the greatest and oldest trades in the history of the world, has certainly, shall we say, left it's mark on this modern world. Books, newspapers, currency, and other means of communication and exchange have proved to be invaluable, all over the world for thousands of years. Of course, there must be a high quality of skill and craftsmenship to be able to hold a position as a successful and capable member of the printing academy . And thatis where the story of Burgard high quality vocational training comes into the picture. The story of Burgard's Printing Department is one of exceptional tradition with a back- ground of exceptional supervision and highly technological craftsmanship. In 1910, the Broadway Vocational School of Printing and Bookbinding opened in the base- ment of School 44 at the corner of Broadway and Krupp Streets. The late Mr. William B. Kamprath was head of this newly established school, and the late Mr. Edward T. Welsh, the first instructor in printing. It was in 1911 that the late Mr. John C. Heinike joined the faculty. Later, in 1912, the school was moved to Michigan and Tupper streets and renamed, Vocational School of Printing. Still later, in 1914, the school was moved to a new location on Elm Street and became known as Elm Vocational School. 1917 saw the first linotype installed, and in the years that followed, more and more rooms were needed to house the printing machines. 1920 to 1927 witnessed the establishment of eight new annexes to Elm Vocational School. In 1925 Mr. George Mullenhoff became the instructor in press work at Elm Vocational High School. Then in 1926, the late Henry P. Burgard offered to donate a six acre site on Kensington Avenue for a sorely needed new school. Shortly thereafter, in 1929, the cornerstones were laid for the foundation of Burgard Vocational High School. That same year, 1929, Lithographic courses were begun and taught by Mr. Cyrus H. John- son. The school as we know it now was officially open in 1930. Since then the printing depart- ment has produced hundreds of printers for the Western New York and throughout the entire country. Through the years the department became rich in knowledge in machinery, and in printers. In 1954, the printing department received new equipment valued at more than 550,000 to further the courses at Burgard. Since that time Burgard has been constantly receiving the latest in modern printing equip- ment we already have, we graduated printers who were capable, and very much in demand. Our printing department has for many years been a symbol of Burgard Quality. But the neverending strive for education has no regard for school spirit or tradition. When it was learned this year that the printing department was to move to the new McKinley Vocational High School, we felt that we lost not a majority of students, and a fine printing faculty, but a part of Burgard that is irreplacable. But the Burgard quality printing department will live on, for many years to come. To the entire printing faculty, and to it's students a sorrowful farewell. This year of 1967-1968 has brought dramatic changes to our school. The Printing Department, to be relocated at the new McKinley High School, provided the most dramatic and momentus change to Burgard in many years. While our Aviation and Automobile Departments will be expanded, our Library will be relocated and enriched, the prime concern in preparation of those students who will transfer to a new faculty and carry the Burgard Banner afield. We have made every effort to inspire each student to strive and develop characteristics of good leadership and sound moral fibers and desirable academic trusts that we of Burgard may be well received and proud of their accomplishments. 20 Q at v L. To R. D. Loomis-Vice-President, E. Serwacki-President, D. Hopkins-Secretary Senior Sidelight We entered Burgard in 1964 in the month of September, just to find out how different Burgard was compared to the Grammar school we had been used to in the previous years. We took the title of Freshman, and being the underclassmen of the school, we made it through the first forty weeks. After an exciting vacation we returned to take the role of Sophomores. During this year we went on to more exciting and advanced learning. Many of us got to know our teachers better, and could look for them as friends as well as teachers. The following year each of us realized the good friends we had and that we could look upon each other when help was needed. For many of us our Junior year flew by and we now reigned as Seniors. The fourth year, being our final, was the most exciting of them all. Many of us took part in assembly programs and activities to make this school a better one for our future student body. The Seniors, now being young adults, have so many to thank that it is impossible to thank everybody, so thatis all we can say is Thank You, Burgard. 21 AMATO, CARL ANDERSON, RAYMOND ANNUNZIATA, PATRICK AVIATION AUTOMOBILE Honor Roll Merit Roll BAKER, JOHN BARR, BRUCE AUTOMOBILE AUTOMOBILE Bowling Club Weight Lifters Monitors Driver Education Student Council Merit Roll Junior Achievement Intramural Basketball Merit Roll Intramural Track 22 AUTOMOBILE BARTNIK, DENNIS PRINTING Craftsman Staff Editorial Staff Printing Explorers Student Council Class Officers Honor Roll Merit Roll Cross Country Wrestling BARTULA, JOHN AUTOMOBILE BEAMER, ROBERT PRINTING Craftsman Staff Editorial Staff Bowling Club Printing Explorers Merit Roll Intramural Basketball BASS, DAVID AVIATION Craftsman Staff Bowling Club Rifle Club V.I.C.A. This year the post graduate course of Burgard 1967-1968 was composed ofa large group, and each of the young men surely gained the extra knowledge they will need out in the trade. The post graduate being the upper classman even to the seniors, sets a good example for underclassmen and especially next years Post Graduates. After completing this course the Post Graduates are given a series tests by the Federal Aviation Agency to which the successful ones receive the Airframe and Power Mechanic licence. We the students and faculty of Burgard congratulate these boys and wish them all the luck in the future. 45 L. To R. M. Graham-Secretary, S. Smith-Vice-President, D. Matusak-President, J. Lee-Treasurer J unror Class History From the Fall of 65 to the Fall of 68 we have changed greatly. We are not the babies of the school anymore, we are not the underclassmen anymore, we are ready to take over the leadership of the school. We are ready to become Seniors. Last year we found our High School education was half over with. We were gaining real pride and school spirit in Burgard. Now in the third year, everything is falling into its proper place. We keep plugging toward our ultimate goal, the title of Senior. -V We are sure that our final year will be our best, not only because of Graduation and the Prom, but because we will be the leaders of the school, ready to give a helping hand to the underclassman. 47 GROUP 301 ROW 1: P. We look back, and find that our faculty and fellow students have taught us many things, one of the most important, being responsibility and the ability to work as a group. As we watch the year come to an end, we eagerly look forward to our Sophomore year. 69 GROUP 101 ROW 1: L. Gilbert, S. Hernande, K. Dunkle, J. Batcho. ROW 2: F. Paruki, A. Banks, A. Bellezza, M. Leading patron seller gives advice. Our Assemblies, throughout our four years at Burgard, and especially this year were both educational and entertaining. They varied from the assembly about Viet Nam to a program on the care and use of firearms. Each assembly was informative and many of the students gained valuable information from the guest speakers. Wild assemblies such as the Election Day Assembly brought the roar of the crowd shaking the rafters in the School, but it was all understandable fun. Our more serious assemblies went on quietly as each student as well as teachers appreciated spared moments that bettered our education. 80 Burgard hero returns. Burga.rd,s Lawrence Welk. CRAFTSMAN STAFF This year the Burgard Craftsman staff worked their hardest to put out a book which we hope is the best yearbook that Burgard ever had. The whole staff worked very hard, and after many used up oencils and sore typing fingers, we produced the Craftsman for 1968. The editor, Dennis Bartnik, and assistant editor Robert Beamer headed the staff through much difficulty. The long hours of toil, along with the hard work by Chester Bilewicz, Nick Angelo, and Thomas McMahon gave us the fine pictures, layouts, and articles. Being the first year on the staff, we ran into many difficulties, but thanks to the expert guidance of Mr. Peters and Mr. Mathien, we proudly present the student body and faculty with this years yearbook. Mr. Sherman and his boys took care of their end of the burden very well, by taking care of the patron sales. Many problems arose with the pictures, but thanks to Mr. Mathien and his photography crew, the problems were ironed out. lt was he who produced many of the candid and sports shots that were badly needed. The sports were covered very well by our sports editor who wrote many of the write-ups. The staff this year was very large and it would be impossible to congratulate every one for the fine job done in developing the Craftsman for 1968. We thank them for the hours of tedious work spent, and we hope you are pleased with the best yearbook for the best school. 84 Craftsman Editors: Dennis Bartnik, Robert Beamer. This is because the Printing department which was very busy with its' moving to Mc- Kinley, could not give the bulletin the needed time and effort. However, the staff was hard at work, under the direction of the editor, Percy Lambert. They gathered much information and many new ideas that will be used for next years issues, which should be the best Burgard has ever seen. Bulletin Editors: Lambert, P., Stewart, D. FORD TECHNICIANS The competition rages on in the Automobile busi- ness, so some of the boys took advantage of the Ford Technicians Program which gave them an extra step ahead. The use of Mr. Peter's Mustang shows how Ford has advanced and will keep on advancing. We know that Burgard will keep on participating in this move. Student participation in this program has the fol- lowing advantages: lj Valuable reference for future jobs. 2j Increased product knowledge at no cost. 31 Employment opportunities with Ford Dealers. 41 Rewards to outstanding students. 51 Certification received at the completion of the program. BOWLI G The bowling club consists of eight teams of four men apiece, and meet on Wed. after school from 3:15 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.. This is one of the schools extra curricular activities that meet no matter what season it is, or what the weather is. The President of the league is John Busalachi, Vice-President and Treasurer is David Bass, and the secretary is Douglas Godston. Through the years the bowling club has furnished a means for its members to taste the sweets of victory and the sours of defeat besides having a lot of just plain fun. Ford Technicians: Durham, J., Feist, W., Fiegel, M., Krathaus, A., Heniich, L. BAND This year the Burgard Band had a poor start but with the fine leadership of Mr. Harry Bash, who is at Burgard for his first year, we must say a fine job accomplished. He brought the sour notes into the sweet sound of music and hopefully may have started a new career for many of the boys he has given lessons to. The band entertains us at a majority of the assemblies, and we at Burgard give them a big hand for their fine efforts. ROW l: Williams, B., Grable, A., Giza, D. Under the leadership of Mr. Norman Mathien the members learned a numerous amount of knowledge concerning the camera and its many functions. This will be especially im- portant to them since the camera is an ever increasing means of communication. Dave Stewart our 'LFuzzy Focus l968,' was on the job at all the assemblies and got us more than enough pictures. GLEE CLUB Just organized last year, the Glee Club has given us many fine performances at assemb- lies. A job well done by Mr. Bash as he took a group of fine voices and harmonized them. LIBRARY ST FF The library assistants help Mr. Flynn, our librarian, in many ways, Before classes start they help check out books, accept books for return, and place the books in the proper places back on the shelves. Magazines are ar- ranged in an orderly way on the racks. These and other clerical duties, allow Mr. Flynn to perform the professional work of answering reference questions and helping students to find the resources to complete their assign- ments. MODEL UNITED NATIG S The model U.N. is a club we at Burgard are privileged to have. There are about 110 in Buffalo and the surrounding rural areas, who are chosen to represent a country of the world. Every year the model U.N. studies about a particular country. Towards the end of the school year they are called together in a joint meeting to dis- cuss their problems with other nations. Much of their work has been on display in the fourth floor showcase throughout the year. CHESS CLUB This years Chess Club was one of our most ambitious within recent years. Under the able, inspiring dynamism of Mr. Knier, the club embarked upon an Inter-High Chess tournament. What is interesting and exciting about the tournament was the fact that Bur- gard encountered teams from the parochial schools as well as our own public schools. From the parochial schools we played: Cani- sius, Turner, Ryan and Saint J oseph's. From the public schools we fought South Park, Tech, Bennett, Riverside, Kensington and Seneca. Although the team's showing was only fair, they deserve much credit for the ambitious program which theyire in. WW? CAFETERIA STAFF Mrs. Ratajczak making one of her old home remedies. The most unappreciated staff in the school is our good cooks of the cafeteria staff. This group of hard working women are the ones that keep the student body going through the last few hours of the day. The fine lunches were well appreciated by everyone and never was there a bad word to say. This year the use of box lunches was brought in more extensively and many of the students now buy their lunch instead of bringing them. We thank the cafeteria staff for a delicious year and many of us look for another delicious semester. 100 BURGARD'S BULLDOGS ' nike. VARSITY In this season's Harvard Cup Competition, the Bulldogs of Burgard were expected to do very well. Judging by the schedule we had, it was one of the easiest schedules we have ever played. Our first 3 games matched the Bulldogs up with the 3 weaker teams in the entire league. Over anxiousness, penal- ties, and a non-team effort cost the Bulldogs a 12 to 7 loss against a weak East High team in the season opener. Spirit- ed Kensington also stopped our boys by the score of 25 to 18, giving our boys their second defeat in as many starts. In the Emerson game, our boys finally pulled themselves to- gether for a hard fought 12 to 6 victory. We hoped that this game would snap us out of our slump, but the host Bennett team revealed that our hopes were only dreamsg we lost the game by a score of 18 to 0. Then, probably our fi- nest game of the season was brought to us by the hands of Hutch-Tech at All-High Stadium. In this game, our hard hitting defense, led by All-High tackle Bruce Carter, really let Tech know that Burgard was not to be run over. Al- though we lost that game by a score of 19 to 6 we proved to the world that Burgard plays for keeps, the hard way. Our final game of the season was against arch rival Seneca. Now you've got me mad, and you're really going to get it. A hard hitting gameg we came out on the short end again by a score of 19 to 7. There were many, many outstanding players on this sea- sons team, despite the record. On offense, Howard Ander- son, a Post Graduate, played as fine a football season as could be played. Coming off a serious knee injury from last season, Howard was simply fantastic this season, and we are sorry to see him leave us. Bruce Carter, our 2 way tackle, kept up the tradition of Burgard All-High linemen, in this, his first year out for football. Such standouts as Cleveland Wilson, Harry Pender, Jim Billings, Louie Chichester, Ed Kirsits, Joe Wagstaff, Eddie Doss and Cornelius Redden, were all over the field. A special vote of thanks also goes to Darryl Washington, Burgards manager for this season. He did his job with in- telligent skill and leadership. A well liked personality by both teachers and students. A vote of thanks also goes out to Coach Garcea and Coach Banas, who year after year try to perfect the talents of up and coming stars. With the ma- terial that the Junior Varsity has shown, watch out for the football team next year. We hope to be stronger than ever. On this play we'l1 really massacre them. Faced with the never- ending task of organization, learning new techniques, and perfecting natural ability, we gave all our time and effort for the cause of Burgard victory. But thanks to our coaching staff, we have received a greater, useful understanding of teamwork, pride, leadership, and respect. Things we will experience long after our football playing days are over. So, the seniors of the 1967 Burgard football squad thank head coach Russ Garcea, and assistant coach Hank Banas for the excellent physical and mental guidance that they have given us. 104 Edwin Kirgitg-Left Tackle Bruce Carter-CA11 Highl-Right Tackle , X hr Cornelius Redden-End and Half Back Robert Carlson-Guard Dennis Carrigan-Guard Cleveland Wilson-Half Back Harry Pender-Left Half Back Louis Chichester-Center and Guard 105 Watch out for my finger will ya. We would like to see more student atten- dance at the games to see these budding athletes, some of them becoming stars in professional ball. The team compiled a mediocre record of five wins and four losses. However it was an exciting veteran team to watch, eight of nine starters being seniors. The team was sparked by such performers as Jerry Sitek, Walter Majtyka, Walter Iwanenko and Bob Williams. We hope this years team under the positive coaching of Mr. Guariglia will be even more successful so that a championship trophy can be brought home to the Bulldogs. In dual meets the Bulldogs were 8 and 3 losing only to East, Bennett and South Park. Revenge came in the All-High run when Burgard finished ahead of East. Eddie Doss the squads back up man, also tied the record of the 220. Russ Gaiter a mile contender finished third place in the all high meet and we have high hopes for him in the 1968 season. Our pole vaulters did their best and Victor Torres and Cornelius Redden finished fourth and fifth at the All High stadium. All the members of the squad played with true BURGARD spirit. Although the team had plenty of enthusiasm, they were hindered somewhat by the lack of in- spiration on the part of their fellow students. Mr. Goatseay feels confident that a larger turnout of tennis candidates would have meant victory for our team. He hopes that more BURGARD students will take an interest in tennis and join the squad in April. The prospects for next season are hopeful. We hope that a substantial number of students will join the squad and drive our team to a BURGARD victory. Check out that fancy step PUTS FORTH CHARGE Is he afraid to get hit in the face? The Craftsman was composed only through the fine efforts of many teachers and students, but We havenlt time to thank them all. The only way to have a good book for a low price is by having 10076 patron sales, and we hope next year more students will help the Crafts- man along. 135 IN MEMORIAM We arrived in school that one Monday morning, ready for another week of school work. However it wasn't long before we obtained the shocking and depressing news of the death of one of Burgardls finest shop teachers, Mr. Thomas McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy was no ordinary teacher. A fine example of self-determina- tion, he obtained not only a Bachelor's but also a Master's degree at the Uni- versity of Buffalo. In the classroom Mr. McCarthy was a firm but fair disci- plinarian. Always creative, he provided inspiration to his learning, fledging students. To the veteran teachers, he was an example of avoiding compla- cency. Our hearts go out to Mr. McCarthy. He is and will be sorely missed. 136 iv W l 5,55 4 6 ,2- .v-f 'd L r I r I
