The story of Burgard's Printing Department is one of fine tradition with a background of fine craftsmanship. ln 1910 the Broadway Vocational School of Printing and Bookbinding opened in the basement of School 44 at the corner of Broadway and Krupp Streets. Mr. William B. Kamprath was head of the newly established school, and the late Mr. Edward T. Welsh, the first instructor in printing. lt was in 191 1 that Mr. John C. Heinike ioined the faculty. Later, in 1912, the school was moved to Michigan and Tup- per Streets and renamed Vocational School of Printing. Still later, in 1914, the school was moved to a new location on Elm Street and became known as Elm Vocational School. 1917 saw the first linotype installed, and in the years that followed more and more rooms were needed to house the printing machines. 1920 to 1927 witnessed the estab- lishment of eight new annexes to Elm Vocational School. ln 1925 Mr. George W. Mullenhoff became the instructor in press work at Elm Vocational. 10 PRINTING AND

Today every phase of aviation is taught and few schools in the world could boast of full size flyable aircraft in their classrooms. From the history making Flying Tiger through the Bell Helicopter to the full size iet powerplants Burgard leads the way in the train- ing of the aviation workers of the future. From the faculty viewpoint probably no school in the world can equal Bur- gard in quality instruction. All Burgards teachers are li- censed aircraft mechanics. Both Mr. Ductor and Mr. Farch- min are licensed CAA examiners. Many of our teachers are pilots both private and instruction and Mr. Catalano is well known as a parachute rigger and iumper. Students of our Aviation Classes have gone into many im- portant positions in the industry not only in this area but throughout the entire world and there is little that goes on in aviation that somehow is not reflected at Burgard 9

LITHOGRAPHY Then, in 1926, Henry P. Burgard offered to donate a six acre site on Kensington Avenue for a sorely needed new school. Shortly thereafter, in l929, the cornerstone was laid for the foundation of Burgard Vocational High School. The same year, l929, lithographic courses were begun and taught by Mr. Cyrus H. Johnson. The school, as we know it today, was officially opened in l930. Since then, the Burgard printing department has produced hundreds of printers for Western New York and throughout the entire country. Through the years, the department be- came rich in knowledge, in machinery, and in printers. ln 1954, the printing department received new equip- ment valued at more than 550,000 to further the courses of printing in Burgard. Last year, l956, Mr. John C. Heinike retired from his teaching career. The department suftered a great loss,but with the effort, enthusiasm, ambition, and spirit of Burgard, the printing department shall continue to prosper and grow, producing tomorrow's citizens and printers. ll
