Rai! T7'd7Z5100ff6lfZ.07Z ERE is oNE of the largest rail centers in the nation, served by ten major rail- roads having fourteen freight terminals and five passenger stations. The principal railroads serving Buffalo are: Baltimore and Ohio Lehigh Valley Canadian-National New York Central Chcsapeake'Ohio Nickel Plate Delaware, Lackawanna Pennsylvania Erie Wabash ln addition the Canadian Pacific operates into Buffalo over Toronto, llamil- ton and Buffalo and the New York Central. All told there are twenty'six classifica- tion yards, with 600 miles of trackage and a capacity of 57,000 cars. lnside the city limits, and just to the Northeast, there are three belt lined Railroads tapping all sections: The New York Central, The Erie, and The Dela- ware, Lackawanna and VVestern. Two switching lines serve the inner harbor area, the Buffalo Creek and the South Buffalo Railway. Wafer Transportation UFFALO'S water borne freight, averaging 20,000,000 tons annually, estab- lishes the Queen City Of The Lakes as the largest inland port of the nation in value of traffic handled and second largest in volume of tonnage, being surpassed only by Duluth. Along the busy waterfront are stretched nearly 40 miles of piers and docks, truck terminals, railroad sidings, freight stations, mammoth grain elevators and warehouse facilities. The interchange of freight is handled quickly and at low cost. An economical link between the Atlantic Ocean and Buffalo is provided by 800 miles of New York States Barge Canal System. This waterway handles as much as 5,000,000 tons of freight annually, made up largely of grain, scrap iron, and oil. The Erie, Champlian, Oswego, Syracuse, Utica, Schenectady, Albany, New York City and other Interstate points Navigable about eight months of the year. This inland waterway gives Buffalo a thriving business advantage over many other industrial centers in the east.
