This is an indication of the high regard which you and your parents hold this comparatively new form of high school training. Now you are graduating. Most of you will stay in Buffalo and become a part of the business and industrial life of the city of your birth. The principal railroads serving Buffalo are: Baltimore and Ohio Lehigh Valley Canadian-National New York Central Chcsapeake'Ohio Nickel Plate Delaware, Lackawanna Pennsylvania Erie Wabash ln addition the Canadian Pacific operates into Buffalo over Toronto, llamil- ton and Buffalo and the New York Central. All told there are twenty'six classifica- tion yards, with 600 miles of trackage and a capacity of 57,000 cars. lnside the city limits, and just to the Northeast, there are three belt lined Railroads tapping all sections: The New York Central, The Erie, and The Dela- ware, Lackawanna and VVestern. Two switching lines serve the inner harbor area, the Buffalo Creek and the South Buffalo Railway. Wafer Transportation UFFALO'S water borne freight, averaging 20,000,000 tons annually, estab- lishes the Queen City Of The Lakes as the largest inland port of the nation in value of traffic handled and second largest in volume of tonnage, being surpassed only by Duluth. Along the busy waterfront are stretched nearly 40 miles of piers and docks, truck terminals, railroad sidings, freight stations, mammoth grain elevators and warehouse facilities. The interchange of freight is handled quickly and at low cost. An economical link between the Atlantic Ocean and Buffalo is provided by 800 miles of New York States Barge Canal System. This waterway handles as much as 5,000,000 tons of freight annually, made up largely of grain, scrap iron, and oil. The Erie, Champlian, Oswego, Syracuse, Utica, Schenectady, Albany, New York City and other Interstate points Navigable about eight months of the year. This inland waterway gives Buffalo a thriving business advantage over many other industrial centers in the east. K 0 aaa ia My .... T SEEMS like yesterday that we walked into Burgard Vocational High School with a bewildered look on our faces, wondering what the forthcoming years would be like. Well it wasn't long before we found out. Our Freshman year was the most hectic. We were always worrying whether we were doing the right thing or not. We soon learned the ways of the school, and accustomed ourselves to the daily task of learning. Soon, exam time was here, and we passed with flying colors. One more step was taken to better our education. Now we were Sophomores, and felt pretty big. We looked at the Freshmen and wondered if we looked like them when we were in their shoes. This year Burgard sponsored the Philharmonic. We wanted to prove to everyone that we could have a sell out, and we did. It was the event of the year and Burgard was well spoken of for their accomplishment. As usual, June arrived and it was exam time again. We were all worried, but our worries came to an end as we took our place in the school of Juniors. Our junior year was going to be a great accomplishment in our minds. We realized that one more year and we would be Seniors. With this as inspiration, we worked hard, and when the exams came along, we were rewarded by reaching the top rating of Seniors. Our Senior year, like our Sophomore year, was a historic one because it mark- ed two important events. An Explorer Post and Kcy Club were formed during this eventful year. We realized that if it hadn't been for the patience and understanding of our teachers we would have never made the grade which we now hold-graduates of Burgard High. Seventy percent of the wheat ground becomes flour, the rest feed. Naturally the predominance of Hour and feed milling which Buffalo has derives from geography and freight rates. When the railroads were forced to sever their shipping interests, and with- drew preferential milling in transit privileges from Minneapolis in 1920, Buffalo gained a decisive transportation advantage. The city now boasts the two largest mills, including General Mills, mammoth 3,700,000 pound plant. As one can see, Buffalo is the nation's foremost producer of flour, and Hour which makes the bread that we eat which makes the human cycle turn round. The Buffalo Municipal Airport, handling an average of eighty-five flights a day is one of the most modern in the nation. Daily service is maintained by planes of the American Airlines, Capital Airlines, Robinson Airlines and All American Airlines. All this providing excellent commuting by air from any major point in the nation. These airline companies offer many a good chance for a Buffalo youth to make good in the aircraft field by main- taining service centers for their airplanes here. Buffalo, because of its strategic location as the hub of the industrial North- east is well fitted as an air terminal. The use of air travel to centrally located areas of population has become a common system of the American transportation program, both for freight and personnel. The air transportation future in Buffalo presents an endless horizon of improved facilities and better service with a real place in the transportation system of the nation. Aviation Industry SINCE CURTISS WRIGHT left in 1946, Buffalo has made no complete conven- tional aircraft, and does not expect to. But Bell Aircraft, whose sales power, derived from 317 million dollar peak to a 12 million dollar postwar production has recently received a quarter billion dollar defense order. Bell and the recently added division of Ohio's Twin Coach Co. are Buffalds important participants in the Aircraft lndus- try today. With 8,500 workers Bell is now the city's second largest employer Cafter Bethleheml. It makes helicopters, guided missals, jets-engine nacelles, experimental aircraft, and has a 2,000 man engineering department working on research and development of guided missals and rocket engines. Twin Coach, under john Lee, Curtis Wright, Buffalo Manager, in World War II, turns out complicated center sections and wing panels for Cunsman. Twice big plane companies have moved away QConsolidated left in the l930'sD disrupting employment. Bell and Twin Coach are now subcontracting themselves to avoid employment pyramids. Mr. Garcia who has served faithfully for many years, retired as football coach. Mr. Murph Mineo, well known sports figure of Buffalo took over as head coach. His first move was to change Burgard to the sin- gle wing formation. Mr. Mineo seeing the job before him aquired the able assistance of Tom Powers as line eoaeh. After lining up the team the rugged practice before the hrst game was started. Mr. lVlineo constantly stressed eontlitioning. llis theory that fl VVELL CONDITIONED TEAM HAS LESS CI IANCE OF INIURYH proved very true. The Burgard team at one time came very close to being eham- pion, but minor injuries and bad breaks soon proved otherwise. They Played a very good offensive game and the best defensive ball of all the high schools. We are extremely Proud of Ronald Dashner who made lirst string All-lligh and Iohn Peeler who made seeond string All - High. VVe are equally proud of llobert liuhland, Lemuel W1'iglit, Everett Ruhland, and VVarren 'Stevens who made honorable mention. The student body at Burgard awaits the next coming football season with great anxiety. At the start of the season sixty-eight hots reported lor try outs, hut hy the time of our first game Mr. Elliott haul cut this numher clown to thirteen to nialte up the final team. This group went on to beat llast and South Parlt which boasted the lincst teams in the league. The 1955 season looks good to Coach Elliott with most of the team returning. Rurgard came in seventh place with at total of six points. The boys that came through were Israel Waislmingtorm in the broad jump, Robert Harling in the 220, and the relay team came in fourth. In the triangular meets, the squad did as much as they could. The major letter winners back this year are Israel Wzishingtcmn, Lemuel W1'ight, Iflugh Arnold, Robert Harling, Iiarnhain Lyon, and Donald bloody. This should be Rurgarcls best season. This year's team was coached by Mr. Garcea due to the retirement of Mr. Lynch. The team finished seventh in the All High meet over a muddy course. The squad had Ronald Gibson, Farnham Lyon and Robert Green as major letter winners from last year. A Fresh- man who did exceptionally well was Eugene Neely. In the hrst two meets he finished ninth and tenth and shows promise of improvement for next year. Other Freshmen who did well are Ed Berti, William McMillan, Leroy Coleman, Herman Porter, Joseph Muscarella, Richard Gilbraith, Richard Moore and Eugene Schmitt. Robert lrlarling returning from the l9'5'l squad was a great inspiration to the team. Ronald Gibson of Group 340 was Burgards top run- ner and Farnham Lyon will be the only major lettermen to graduate which augurs well for the coming season. This year's squad was capably managed by David Nlajchrzak and we thank ii him for an excellent job. We have hopes that soon Burgard will return to its former place in thc Gross Gountry history of the city. Burgard defeated every Vocational team and South Parla, finishing in 7th place, one point below Technical High School. In the Freshma division Group 106 was victorious. Group 204 lead the Sophomores while 305 too the lead among the Juniors. This grou went on to win the school champion- ship. Baseball 0 ln interclass baseball groups 105, 231, and 333 were the respective winners in their divisions. The school champions were finally determined to be the Soph- omores from 231. The season sawa total of 312 participating and was one of the most successful ever operated by Burgard.
