It is natural that our thoughts shoulct have tre- quently turneci with respect anci acimiration ciuring the past tew months to those patient hrothers, Wilhur anct Qrville Wright whose success on the ciunes ot North Carolina ushereci in the age ot tlight. Cir Decemher 17, 1903, the Wright hrothers tittect a hiplane glizier with a 16 H.P. motor which ctrove ciouhle screws hehinci the wings. The total weight oi the machine was 750 pouncis. Qrville Wright macie the tirst powereci tlight ever completeci hy man. At a speeci ot 30-35 MPH the plane coverecl. a ctistance ot 120 teet in 12 seconcts. Later the same ctay Wilhur Xvright tlew 852 teet in 59 seconcts. Present-ctay aircratt pertormance comparect with that ot the Wright hrothers tirst airplane reveals astonishing growth anct progress tor so short a span as titty years. The improvement in engines, range, speeci, altitucte, loact, anci weight is remarleahle.
