We ctecticate this, our 1954 Crattsman to Aviation which this past year has celehratect its Fittieth Anniversary. It is natural that our thoughts shoulct have tre- quently turneci with respect anci acimiration ciuring the past tew months to those patient hrothers, Wilhur anct Qrville Wright whose success on the ciunes ot North Carolina ushereci in the age ot tlight. Cir Decemher 17, 1903, the Wright hrothers tittect a hiplane glizier with a 16 H.P. motor which ctrove ciouhle screws hehinci the wings. The total weight oi the machine was 750 pouncis. Qrville Wright macie the tirst powereci tlight ever completeci hy man. At a speeci ot 30-35 MPH the plane coverecl. a ctistance ot 120 teet in 12 seconcts. Later the same ctay Wilhur Xvright tlew 852 teet in 59 seconcts. Present-ctay aircratt pertormance comparect with that ot the Wright hrothers tirst airplane reveals astonishing growth anct progress tor so short a span as titty years. The improvement in engines, range, speeci, altitucte, loact, anci weight is remarleahle. Toctay airplanes are huilt with wings longer than that tirst tlight, anti the weight has heen increaseci some 2000 times. The airplane holcis a unique position in the history ot transportation, unrestrictect as it has heen hy the limitations ot surtace harriers. it otters a challenge to the ectucational system ot toctay to see that the youth ot our country are properly intormeci on the many aspects ot aviation trom its technological acivances to the social, economic, anci international olitical implications so that all its henetits may he tully utiiizeri to the hest actvantage. Xwe here at Burgarci are proucl, to have a part in the worlct ot aviation ami hecause ot that part, the taculty anci stuctents are privilecigect to cteciicate this hoolz to Aviation's Golcien Aiiniversary, ancl. to the Pioneers of Flight who marie this anniversary possihle. WALTER E. LYNCH After more than twenty years as a member of the faculty of Burgard Vocational High School, Mr. Walter E. Lynch has filed his no- tice of retirement. Affectionately known to all as Jabber , Mr. Lynch will be missed equally by both students and his fellow faculty members. Mr. Lynch leaves behind a record which reads as an adventure story or the dream of the real American Boy . Mr. Lynch was first a student at Niagara University where he played football, basketball, baseball, and track. In 1915 he entered professional baseball in the old Fed- eral League. In 1916 and 1917 he played for Buffalo in the International League. During World War I he served overseas with the AEF and was decorated. He played basketball with the AEF team. On his return from service he played ball again, this time with the Boston Red Sox. He was associated with such greats of baseball as Ty Cobb, George Sisler, 'Babe Ruth, Eddie Collins and Walter Johnson. During the 1924 season he played for Montreal and in the fall returned to Niagara as assistant coach in all sports. It was that year that he also played professional basketball with the German Ori- oles. His desire to help youth led him to enroll in Cortland State Teachers College from which he graduated in 1928 as a Physical Edu- cation teacher. Mr. Lynch came to Burgard in 1932 and his ability as a Cross Country coach has brought many championships to Burgard. As baseball coach he also led the school to several league championships. As a teacher, friend and coach, Jabber will be missed at Burgard by all who knew him. He is one of those men of whom it can honestly be said, He will be hard to replace . V M HARVEY A. GUENTHER After forty years in the business of prepar- ing young people to earn a living Mr. Guenther is finally to take a well earned rest. In 1913 Mr. Guenther organized the first machine shop classes at the YMCA Tech. In- stitute. In 1915 he organized the first tool-mak- ing classes. In 1918 Mr. Guenther went to Troy N.Y. to teach Shop Mathematics and Trigo- nometry. In 1923 Buffalo was finally able to in- duce Mr. Guenther to return and We were fortunate here at Burgard that he came to us. Mr. Guenther began his career at old Elm in the auto electrical shop. Naturally when Bur- gard was opened he came to the new building as one of the auto mechanics teachers. His teaching career at Burgard shows a tremen- dous versatility in teaching ability. Mr. Guen- ther taught tube bending, metal fabrication and riveting as well as machine shop for the avia- tion department in addition to his auto mechan- ics experience. When World War II ended in Europe the US Army was desirous of establishing trade schools for the army of occupation which was to remain in Europe. Here again the unique talents of Mr. Guenther were recognized and he went to England as the Senior Machine Shop Instructor at the Wharton American Technical School at Wharton England. This was in July of 1945. In March of 1946 back in the United Stateslagain Mr. Guenther became Supervisor of Vocational Rehabilitation for the State of New York. Finally Mr. Guenther returned to Burgard, a fact for which we have all been grateful for he was missed by all of us, teachers and stu- dents alike. This year Mr. Guenther is leaving Burgard and the field of education and we will once more be saddened by the departure of one of the pioneers of Vocational Education, Through- out his entire career Mr. Guenther was a cham- pion of Vocational Education and its benefits to the youth of the world. i Engfislz ancf Sociaf Stuafies Richard Braclzen Wallie Engiuncl Monroe Harris Iames Lanz John Brinizwortli Anne Gould Margaret Heaps facie Migliore 5 Joimn Demeriy Allan Hague Daniel Hulse Mary Scanlon IIIIII I I I I IIIHIINI III I I4I I I Ill I Illll I I I I I I I I I I I I lllll I llllllllllllllllillllll III IllllllIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIlllllllllllllllllllllIHIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIII Related Teclznicaf and Plzysical Education Harry Aclner James Finley Ailnert Meinlioid Henry Urban Paul Carrigg Russell Garcca Carlton Pearcli Harry Wright Charles Declzer Kari Helfrich Elmer Rouclenlousii Charles Elliott Waiter Lynch Lloycl Tilley i as 4 Aviation, Printing, ancf Boat Buifaling Ciycie Becker Staniy Fliss Cyrus Ionluson Charles Bumpus Vincent Harmon Alvin Lines Gregory Ductor Alva Henderson George Muiienlioif Eciwarci Farciimin John Heiniize Waiter Poyton Kari Sizinner Angelo Suozzi IIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIHIKIIHIIIIN IHII IH!! F l l l LM, DONALD LUTHER President JOSEPH MAIORANA Secretary Treasurer Class l-listory: lt does not seem very long ago that we were waiting for news of our acceptance as a student at Burgard Vocational l-ligh School. Many sleepless nights were spent in anticipation until the good news finally arrived. ln September of l95O we were admitted to the halls of Burgard for the first time as a student. During that first hectic year we did many things that today seem much easier than when we were asked to do them, as we cleaned around our table in the cafeteria we wondered what it had to do with our chosen trade, and the fear of the Senior Monitor with his t curt you stay was an awful moment in our lives. Gradually those habits and customs of our Grammar school days disappeared and before we realized it the final exams were upon us and we became full-fledged Sophmores. During our second year the Cross-Country team came through with another championship. Our assembly programs seemed to be getting longer and better. A few of the highlights were Mr. l-larris's Dramatic Club in Summer Comes to the - Diamond G , and the varied full length movies seemed to ease the burden of continued school work. But once again we found ourselves sitting. at an examination desk and the worry of passing was on our minds. y At lost we were another step toward our chosen goal. ln our lunior Year came a big event in the history of Burgard, Burgard at the Philharmonicu. With Mr. Roberts in charge we had many fine assembly programs and eventually we proved to everyone that a voccitional school can and will support the highest forms of culture. By this time we had lost many of our comrades to the Services and to the trades, but we hurried on to our Senior year with every hope. Finally! the top of the ladder, we were Seniors. Along with interesting instructions on how to dress properly we were induced to have our pictures taken for the yearbook. Many grumbles were heard but each of us was secretly proud of the result. Teachers became more friendly and helpful and we suddenly realized a new road lay ahead of us. As we now take our first step along that road we think back on the days that have gone before and only the pleasant memories seem to stand out in our minds. Four years at Burgard is a good start along any road to success and for that start we are ever grateful. , J Q N if 1: , -- . 1:1 . - Sai 1 1 f if ' -V., .sqm -S-..,,, -I-. -fran, mfg, -Q.. Uh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silfvered wings, Sunward Poe climbed and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things You'fue not dreamed of .... Wheeled and soared and swung, High in the sunlit silence Hoflfring there, Poe chased the shouting wing along And flung my eager craft through footless hall of air Up, up along delirious burning blue Poe topped the wind swept heights with easy grace, Where never lark or even eagle flew. And while with silent, lifting mind I trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space Put out my hand, and touch the face of God. by John unior Cfass Ofjqcers Leff to Riglzf DENIS PASSfV10RE . . . The pur- pose of this organization is to create, maintain, and extend the high standards of Christian living throughout the school and the com, munity. All the members of the club, under the leadership of Mr. Helfrich have objectiveS of better health, service achievment, mental development, and spiritual environment. Their Gail Whitaker slogan is Clean living, clean sports, clean speech, and clean scholarship . The members meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 10:00 P.M. at the Humbolt YMCA. At these meeting the boys enjoy basketball, swimming and other athletics in addition to the regular business meeting. We have great hopes for the future of the Hi Y here at Burgard. The team, comprised of seasoned veterans, eagerly defeated Bennett for their first win of the season. Building up our hopes based on our first victory the students and the squad were disappointed in the next game when we lost a close decision to East. This loss seemed to provide the spark needed and we sent Lafayette and McKinley to defeat. In the Kensington game disaster struck, we not only lost the game but the services of three regulars. The final game saw us missing these players badly and we went down to defeat before Seneca. With a .500 average we had a good season and although Burgard may not always win they will always fight until beaten and then fight some more. This season is the last for Norm Stadler as assistant coach, as he is entering the Service. Burgard will miss Norm and he will be hard to replace. In this game Bob Harling was high scorer with ten points. The team was not downhearted as they proved by beating South Park in their second game, 52 to 43, with Gary Polik high with Z2 points and John Peeler and Bob Harling doing an excellent job. The boys won two of their next six games, beating Lafa- yette and Grover Cleveland. Then-cameiour game with Seneca. Both teams were evenly matched and Burgard was determined to win this game to avenge their defeat to the Indians last year. When the final gun sounded we found the Bulldogs determination had paid off as we defeated the Seneca Indians by a score of 67 to 53 with Big john Peeler high with Z8 points and Gary Polik close be- hind with 20 points g gg Coach Garcea looks forward to a splended season next: year with most of this years team returning. Of these, 25 were selected after several days of tryouts. The team and Mr. Elliott, our coach, anticipated a good year because of a veteran team but hopes were dimmed when the Bull- dogs lost their first game to Tech by the score of 8 to 6. Burgard finished the season with a 5 and 3 record, losing to Seneca, Tech, and Kensington. Twice the Bulldogs played Bennett, and twice they defeated the Tigers by the same score, 1-0. Two players made All-High team: Gerry Gorzynski in the out- field and Dan Paprota at shortstop. Gary Polik made the second team at first base. , The Junior Bulldogs had a good season in American Legion Ball, winning their post championship but losing to Canisius in the play-offs. All the boys who too first place honors were placed on the All Vocational High Tean Gerald Chudy, Don Moody, Arra Edwards, Bob Gibson, and A Harris, Tony Zuppa tied for first place in the pole vault. The dual meets which preceded the All High gave the boys an 01, portunity to practice against real competition and these meets are big factor in determining the final team. Next year the new singl league competition and the new triangular meets will make it diff cult for the vocational schools but it is expected that Burgard Wi hold its own against the best in the city. T I Zin iltflemumam 4 CHARLES DUKE WELCH 1890-1954 Charles Duke Welch first became associf ated with Burgard in 1939 when he worked with Mr. Pierce and Mr. Carberry helping them with the school hockey team. After hockey was dropped from the list of Burgard athletics Duke turned his interests to our football teams. This was the position in which he was best known to the boys and faculty. He was assistant coach and his main interest was the lun - ior Varsity eleven. This group of boys was his Varsity . They meant a lot to Duke and he meant a lot to them. He drove the boys hard out on the field but they respected him all the more because of it. All these services he rendered to Burgard were done without any pay whatsoever. To him they were not services at allg he did them out of the kindness of his heart and his deep feeling for the youth of Burgard. He was at one time a timer for the Buffalo Hockey Club and more recently he officiated in amature hockey in Canada. . Even though Duke Welch has passed on, his memory will always live at Burgard. The things he said and the tasks he performed will be remem- bered as long as Burgard exists. The boys who be- come athletes now will never know the man that we knew but they will hear much about him, for we are proud and honored to have played under him and to have been associated with him. lt is with this rememberence that we pay him our last respects. 5-Elf ,M E -we - A GROUP CHAMPIONS Freshman Group Sophomore Junior Senior School Intramural Football This season under the direction of Mr. Russell Garcea and the Varsity team the interclass touch. football program was run. This is one of the most popular of Burgard's extra activities. We are indebted to the members of the varsity who contributed so much of their own time to the sucessful promotion of this activity. David Huels and Louis Zitola deserve special commendation. Twenty four group teams took part and the elimination games of the early season cut this figure down to the four champion groups of each class. From these four the school champs were decided. The aviation seniors, undoubtedly because of their familiarity with air offense and defense were able to come through to the final goal and they became the league leaders. lntramural Basketball This was the second year of intramural basketball and a very succesful season was enjoyed. Twenty-five group teams were en- tered but this number woreudown as the elimination contests devel- oped. It was anticipated that the Senior Pressmen of Group 450 would move on to the school championship but in the final games a major upset occured. Group 202, the sophomore auto mechs scored a surprising upset Victory to take lst place in the team standings. Interclass sports are an outstanding example of good sportman- ship in action. Competition is keen and each group participating en- joys the best athletic activity the school can offer. Many thanks are due to George Karalus, Jerry Caruso and others who helped the Physical Education staff so much in the handling of these games.
