Golliwi Last J une, Burgard lost one of its finest instructors in Mr. Francis Collins. He retired from the teaching position after 31 years at Burgard and Elm Vocational. Mr. Collins is a graduate of the State Normal School and has earned a bacheloris and master's degree from the University of Buffalo. Hire served on the faculty at schools 53 and 21, and served in the Army in World War I. His work originally was in English and social studies. He became admin- istrative assistant in the day school and principal in the .evening session for several years, alternating with other faculty members. Wi-eshall always remember that the beginnings of our dramatic work at old Elm were in the hands of Mr. Collins. He is responsible for many firsts in this school. He is now living with his wife at 1320 6th Avenue North, St- Petersburg, Florida. We are looking forward to having Mr. Collins visit his old school whenever he visits his nativve city. Best wishes and good luck from all at Burgard! Ma. Zell Mr. Truman Dell is another one of Burgard's fine instructors who has left recently. He joined Burgard's faculty 31 years ago in the automobile de- partment. On October 24, 1952 Mr. Dell left to become assistant professor of teacher training at the New York State Department of Education. From 1940 to 1945 he was with the State Education Department and did teacher training work at Bell Aircraft, the Curtis Wright Corp., and the New York Central Railroad. He also wrote instructional monographs for the State Education Department. Mr. Dell was given a dinner party October 30th to celebrate his promo- tion to the State Educational Department. Doctor Benjamin C. Willis was the main speaker. Mr. Kamprath and Mr. Doebert also spoke. Mr. William H. Roberts was the general chairman of the party. . The State Education Department has received a very fine addition to its educational resources with Mr. Dell, who was always a faithful advisor to his students and conscientious in the performance of his duties. Best of everything, Mr. Truman G. Dell, from all the Burgard boys and faculty! . Ma. Sieffen Mr. Steffen began as an instructor at Burgard in 1917. First, he taught automobile mechanics. In 1923, Mr. Steffen started the first public aviation course in New York State. In 1924 he secured his pilot's license and started the formation of three Burgard Flying Clubs, owning the Eagle Rock, Waco, and Commandaire ships. Three years ago he helped in the development of the marine engine and boat building course. Now that he has retired, Mr. Steffen wishes to travel to Europe with his wife. At the present time he is on a trip which will include the Atlantic coast to Florida, through the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans, and then to California and up the coast to Washington. He also hopes to spend much time in boating and hunting. Together the Steffens run the Steffen Construction Company which is now building ranch type homes on Grand Island. With him go the best wishes of the faculty and students for the realization of his fondest dreams. His 35 years of faithful service to Burgard is indelibly recorded. WILLIAM B. Among the many honors that can be achieved by a Burgard student, the honor roll is one of the highest. There we stood in front of this building in which we seniors leave our memories of unforgotten days. That was the year of 1949 when we too hoped we could wear the blue and white with pride, as those before us have done. Three hundred of us stood on the steps and in a line down Kensington Avenue hoping to gain entrance into one of the three desired courses, aviation, auto mechanics, or printing. Our graduatng class was referred to as the Forty- ninersf' The awaited day came when we received our letters of acceptance, for now our future schooling was set. Came September and we were gathering in the beautiful staged auditorium with the hun' dreds of strange faces which would become our friends and companions through four years of high school. Oh, the fortunate ones who escaped the hours of initiation as we had our first view of the upper classmen. We looked forward to the day when we as upper classmen could look down on the en- .tering crop of freshmen. Little did we realize the rapidity with which we would become acclimated to the habits and ready to carry the responsibilities of Burgard. The June ex' ams for which we all studied so hard were sweated out by everyone of us, but the results were in our favor for we were now sophomores. We now felt more at home for we developed a feeling of pride an-d success. But we were all sad at heart and worried about our futures, for in the summer of 1950 the Korean War broke out and again Democracy was put to the test of defending its beliefs. Another outstanding addition to Burgard started that year for the boat building course came back to Burgard after being dropped during the last war. In the field of enter.tainment, one can recall the Minstrel Shows, the honor roll assemblies. Mr. Ro' berts entertaining with the organ, and Bob Mag' gio, who many can remember playing his favorite song Lady of Spainn, and then appearing on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. Outstanding was the pantomine quartet of the Four Shadows in which Louis Seitz starred. These memories are put away among our cherished thoughts. 1951 came rolling along and we were now happy juniors except for the thought of the Korean War still raging in our minds. Many young men were dying for the cause of right. During this year we had Jerry Gorzynski placed on the AllfHigh Foot- ball Team. The basketball team was holding its own. The track team had the honor of placing Gibson, Meyers and Chudy on the AllfHigh Team. Mr. Elliott became the new baseball coach and was wished much luck as he took over the team from Mr. Jabber Lynch. Villa Pontiac and Erie County Dodge dealers donated new dual control driverftraining cars this past year. Two of our teachers are using these cars to teach students the finer points of driving. Seniors, a title which we finally achieved after three full years of hard work was now bestowed upon us. During this year we were well aware of the presidential election because of its importance in choosing the man to lead our country at the time in which we will go out in the world of industry. We will leave Burgard with mixed feelings. Surely we feel proud to receive a diploma in our chosen field, but sadly we will say goodfbye to our classmates, friends, teachers and our school. The school year of 195263 was a year in which Burgard became a school of ref nown. The fall season was a very active one, with the band playing at all the foot' ball games in their fine dress uniforms. Then one Sunday afternoon when Santa Claus was being welcomed to Buffalo, the specators saw the one and only band from any public high school. That band was Burgard's. Next came the biggest event of the year. Burgard was to play at the Philharmonic. On March 6, 1953 before a house of three thousand people the band began to play a selection of stirring marches. The band. which is directed by Mr. D'Agostino play' cd so that thc ovations of the audience were overwhelming. Burgard's share of the proceeds will be used in part for the rehabilitation of old instruments and for new orchestrations of music. The team was managed by George Karalus who did a fine job. The boys who did their share of the work and won major letters are Ron Gibson, Bob Hurling, and Art Schmidle, all freshmen. There was a number of seniors who majored. They are Don Gutowslci, Tom Hore, Bolo Preston, Nick Przystowski. From the junior and sophomore classes came Don Rogenmoser, Ken Williams, and Ronald Williams. The Cross Country Team displayed the familiar Burgard fight and spirit and We are proud of their efforts. The third one was won by Seneca. ln the All Vocational Meet, Burgard placed second. ' We are proud of the fact that Burgard was represented on the All Vocational Team by Gerald Chudy, a sophomore who tied for first in the pole vault. Our relay team composed of Bob Meir, Bob Gibson, Joe Eccles and Don Moody won the varsity relay and therefore automatically became members of the All Vocational Team. The remainder of our major letter winners are Cliff Lutz, who ran the 440, Bob Tate, who ran in the sprints, Ara Edwards, in the shot putg Bob Solsback, a mile runner, and Dick Stypa, who represented us in the hurdles. We are proud of the record of this fine team, and especially of our five All Vocational men. This year we expect to have a top track team because there will be a large number of experienced men returning in all the events. 1. Finish of Freshman Relay. 2. Gary Polik hit for 13 points and Bob Harling had 10. Hard luck then fell on Burgard and the once spirited players lost most of their drive and determination which was displayed by the win over East High School. Then came our annual game with our favorite opponent, Seneca. The Indians', tried to scalp us early in the game but all they did was make the Bulldogs try all the harder to win. Trailing 35-16 at the half, the Bulldogs hit for 21 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth to pull with- in nine points of the bewildered Seneca Indians . The game ended with Seneca on top by the score of 58-49 but Burgard was far out in front in spirit. Gary Polik led the attack with 24 points and jumping Jerry Gorzynski sank 8. This as the many spectators will agree, was a game long to be remem- bered. Returning next year will be an experienced quartet, Gary Polik, who captained and inspired the team, scored 171 points this year, is returning along with Roy Lay - up Lumpkin, who had 121 points, Bob Harling, 50 points and two able substitutes, Dan Co-ughlin and George Karalus. Karalus is to be congratulated for the fine job of guarding he did against more experienced players, gadfeiaff Burgard ended its season tied for second place with Bennett and Seneca They lost the playoffs to Bennett by a score of 10 to nothing In the interleague playoffs Burgard lost a very close game to Emerson by a score of 5 to 4. The Burgard team was just breaking in a new coach, Mr. Charles Elliott who replaced Jabber Lynch. He had to work from scratch with his new team. Despite being handicapped by a new team Burgard ended up winning 4 out of 6 regular games. . . Kaye Murphy carried' the bulk of the pitching staff. He had a 2 hit game against Bennett and just missed making All High. jerry Corzynski batted a lusty .368 to lead the team in the hitting department. He was followed by Norv Kranz, who batted' 348. Norv was picked for the second team of the All High. . Mi'. Parents H OW HAPPY Dad and Mother are tonight. Hannv for themselves and for you, too, for this is your night. After four long years of conscientious effort and study, tonight you graduate. Lest you lose sight of the important role that Dad and Mother played in this, your high achievement, may we suggest that without their help none of this would be possible. Nothing in the world is as important to parents -as their children. And you boys who are graduating tonight have only partially paid them back for all their great love and care. Not until you have reached the maximum of efliciency in the crafts for which you have been trained, and have attained the highest rank in theesteem of your fellow craftsman, will you have ful- fiilled for them the greatness which in their hearts they had always hoped for you. They are so proud of you tonight. Won't you promise now-now on the eve of your graduation-that you will never do anything to tarnish that great love they have for you, and that you will work to shape your life so that the highest hopes in the hearts of your Dad and Mom will be realized in the fullest measure.
