' 3 x',.x W , 1 urgarml I-l 5 1898 iklcharh if Qlarherrp 1951 September 15th 1951 brought the sad news of the passing on of Richard J Carberry beloved Burgard Automotive Shop Instructor He had been 1ll several months but had xxiitten Mr Kamprath stating his return to his duties would be Octobei lst 1951 Mr Carberry had been an Automotive Shop Instructor for 25 years 21 years at Burgard Vocational High School and foul at Elm Vocational with part of the latter four years at the Boys Continuation School. As a young man he was a racing car enthusiast and piloted racing cars in competition at the Lockport and Batavia racetracks. His hobbies in recent years had been photography and gardening. He made man3 film strips which he had used 's visual aid in is is teaching. Mr. Carberry s elementary education was acquired at Annunciation Paro- chial School. His secondary education was at St. Joseph s Collegiate Institute and the Buffalo Technical High School. He also was a graduate of the Buffalo State Teachers College course for x ocational shop teachers. Prior to becoming a shop teacher he owned his own automobile sdrx ice garage and was the ser- vice manager of the Buffalo Oakland Motor Car Company. Mr. Carberry was married in 1938 to Madeleine Olivia Ball who survives him. Three brothers and two sisters also survive. Richard J. Carberry was a teacher of outstanding ability. His natural Irish wit and humor, his sympathetic approach to the students' problems, his deep understanding of their needs and encouragement made him beloved by the Burgard faculty and the student body. We seniors of 1952 look back with fond me ro- ries of our first four years at Burgard. It certainly does not seem very long ago since we were awaiting the news of our acceptance or rejection as freshmen at this school We were hoping and praying that we would be accepted Of our group, 115 have remained here for the four' years We are particularly proud of our class record. In September 1948 we entered as freshmen If, was hectic that year. Razing by upper classmen. breaking grammar school habits. and trying to adapt ourselves to new surroundings were but a few of the problems we faced as freshmen. 'We worked and studied hard and xx hen June ermms came xxe passed with flying colors A feeling of pride and superiority enx eloped the students and facultx of Burgard during our sophomore 5 ear We remember with pr ide the Min strel shoxxs for the Honor Roll Assemblies of 1948 and 1949 We recall Mr Weiss masquerading as Professor Beebaskr and M1 Roberts playing hrs saxophone and the Burgard Trro entertaining us xxrth the talents of Stephen Ambo Louis Sertz and Sam Vaccaro B5 1950 xxe xxere xxrse Juniors or sm xxe as sumed and school lrfe introduced more complr cated and tcdrous tasks Our subjects seemed drlii cult and xxe xx ondered rf xxc xxould haxe th nec s Donald Muehlhauer Vice President Gerard Piccolo President sary patience and stamina to continue. However, it was in 1950 that we successfully defended the Cross Country title. Our baseball team also made a fine record. but we were sorry that we lost a hard fought game to Seneca for the Championship. In this year we had Albert Thompson come in first in the All-Vocational run, while in baseball, we had George Dougherty and Santo Santasiero place on the All-High baseball team. Now that we are seniors we are both proud and a little sad. We have learned the importance of sticking to a job until it is well done. On June 6 1968 I met my frxend Ed Rustowicz who was serv1ce manager of Andy s Motors which was owned by Andrew Przystawski I invited Ed to take a trip around the Unlted States with me and V1S1t all the places where our frlends were making history Ed said some of the boys were st1ll located around Buffalo We declded to see them first Ten mlles outside of Buffalo on Route 5 we stopped to see how John J Walsh was doing in one of h1s SpeC13l ized Jet car service stations We understood that Walsh was president of the company and had estab lished an excellent business comprlsmg thirty sei vice statlons in Western New York We were pleased to see that Walsh was so successful In our chat with Walsh we learned that Ronald Buffum had become President of a nationally famous a1rl1nes company A mile down the route from Walsh s we stopped at Dave Gallaghers Enterprises Incorporated and ald Duffy was Labor Relations Manager Continuing on our trip we stopped at Detroit and v1s1ted t.he famous automobile factorles At one of these we met Henry G Weil the Big Wheel of the auto mdustry He and Robert SCI betta owned most of the controlling stock in two different compames We also met Louis Nunn who owned three banks 1n Detroxt We left the fabulous auto Clty and headed for Indianapolis where Tom Carlin was supposed to be competing in the Indxanapolis races Before the races we stopped at Sus1 s famous restaurant There we met several former Burgard boys including Bob Fienen Susis Manager Werner Achenbach and Jack Paler A l1ttle later we all went to the races Toms Jet O L1ner was being checked by Roger Metzger and Gus Karl the ace mechanics of the raceway Metzger won the national prlze for de signing the fastest speedway car 1n the United States It was little surprise to see daredevil Tom win the race with a new record of 564 mlles per hour We had learned previously from some of our frlends that most of the boys from the class of 52 have businesses in California so after we left In d1anapol1s we sped along on our way In New Mex ICO we bought some of the famous pop corn made by the firm of Eli Williamson and John Grimaldi The buslness made them a million dollars In Arizona we stopped to see Roger McLaughlin who was doing secret work for the government We also met James Meade who sells iefrigerated snow to kids who have never seen the stuff He says it IS a very profitable buslness On June 8 we reached Californla and ran into Sir Wllllam McGranahan who was receivmg a monthly check from the government for his contri butlon to the British and American plans for world kowski the ownei of New York Trucking Enter prises John Rushok owner of the Rainbow Truck mg Transport Co and Gilbert Stagner and Gerald Piccolo owners of the East and West Trucking fleet Donald Lelker and Joe Stadler are the owners of California s lalgest Jet Truck Repan Co From the convention we decided to go to the famous restaurant owned and operated by Mlke Karple While eating our lunch we learned from Mlke that V1ncent Ballach1no had just given a speech at one of the Auto Dealers meetings Don G1meno and Henry Kranz were also in much de mand as public speakers Yes slr the graduates of 52 are really breaking records and making money all over the country Oh in case your wondering how we d1d all these things from June 6 to June 8 you shouldn t wonder because dont forget that this is the age of Jet Pro pulslon . This assembly was used to teach the cheers and school songs to the freshmen. The cheerleaders led the cheering, and Mr. Pearch led the singing. Everyone joined in and helped make it a great success. Oct. 2. Today's assembly began with a movie entitled The World ls Rich. It was an interesting and enlightening film, showing the lack of food and clothing in the war ravaged countries: and the measures being taken by the United States and other coun- tries. Mr. Tilley commented on Saturday's football game with Seneca. Mr. Crotty and Mr. Kamprath concluded the assembly with announcements. Oct. 9. Mr. Crotty introduced the speaker, Mr. E. A. Rolands, who spoke on Hobbies Are My Business. He showed us sam- ples of his now famous autograph collection, including such famous names as Babe Ruth, Henry Ford, and Thomas E. Dewey. Mr. Rolands described other odd and interesting hob- bies and displayed examples, such as: a polished bust made from coal, flowers made from the scales of fish, and candle holders made from records. Oct. 16. The morning was devoted to announcements concerning air raid drills and other important notes. Mr. Sharp spoke about reorganization of the Outdoor Life Club. Songs concluded the assembly. Oct. 23. A public service film entitled You Can Beat the A- Bomb. It explained the different types of bursts, the dangers of each, and precautions to be taken. It also showed what to do if you were at home to prevent injury. It also showed what to do in case of a sneak attack. Announcements about Saturday's game with Ken, and cheer practice concluded the assembly. Nov. 9. Our special Armistice Day program was arranged by Mr. Endres. He also introduced the speaker, Col. John Hender- son. Col. Henderson spoke on being prepared and outlined duties of every loyal American. He also recalled some of his humorous experiences, while in the Army. His talk was off the beaten path of Armistice Day speakers, but was well liked. By the way did you know that Messrs. Collins, Lines, Doe- bert, Johnson, Meinhold, Mullenhoff, Tilley, Mutz, Sharp, Lynch, Englund, and Regan all served during World War I? Nov. 13. Today's assembly was opened with the Hag ceremony. A color film, Nevada and Its Natural Resoursesn followed. This movie showed the many unused acres of land in our least populated state. The factories and industries were also ex- plained. The Glee Club, assisted by the band, and with the student body joining in on the chorus, sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Because of American Education Week there were several parents in the assembly. Under the able guidance of Mr. Russ Garcea and Norm Stadler, the grid- ders racked up one tie. three losses and two wins. The team started off great. with Captain Don Muehlbauer at right guard, Gerry Gorzynski at the T position, Dick Stypa and Bob Gaul at halfbacks, Frank York at fullback. John Grimaldi and Jerry Piccolo at ends, Big John Boyd and Don Schwartz at tackles. Clifford Smith at center. and Ron Ponivas holding up the left guard position. Burgard vs. East 23-0 Gerry Gorzynski, facing a fourth and seventh sit- uation on the East 15, heaved a pass to Frank York in the end zone for the score. Stypa ran over for the point. Early in the fourth quarter, Bob Meyer inter- cepted a spectacular flat pass on the East 30 and raced all the way for the Bulldogs second TD. On the first play after the Burgard kickoff, Bob did an encore by snaring Lageman's aerial on the Orien- tal's 32 and sprinting down the left sideline for an- other TD. Burgard vs. Seneca 6-13 In the second period Burgard stormed 70 yards in 11 plays to send the Indians back to their Tee- Pees. Seneca retaliated with a 70-yard scoring drive after receiving the second-half kickoff. The Indians registered their other TD on a 35- yard pass a minute before the final gun. Burgard vs. Bennett 0-0 With neither team able to get an attack rolling Burgard and Bennett spent most of the afternoo battling between the 30-yard stripes. Burgard came up with a scoring threat midwa through the last period but Dennis Bright, Ben nett's captain and guard, stymied the drive by inter cepting a pass after the Bulldog's had reached th Tigers 12. Althougth the boys played a terrific game, th score ended in a deadlock 0-0. Burgard vs. Kensington 7-14 Kensington downed Burgard 14-7 in a har fought game. Burgard's Gerry Gorzynski score on a bootleg around right end. Bob Gall wen through tackle for the point after touchdown. Russell Gattuso-Right nqw there isn't much of a team, but by the time of the All-Vocational meet, we should hit our peak. Bob Solsbak-Even though we might lose a meet, or two, we should Norval Kranz-If our men gain experience and get into shape quickly we should win the All-Vocational meet. Next year the team will be better because this year there were mostly freshmen and first-year seniors on the squad. Joseph Kuklewicz-If we get info shape quickly, we can Vocational championship, RESUUTS This years' Bulldog harrier team did b etter than expected, Lynch and his associates by coming in second in the All-Vocational pionship meet. In the first meet Emerson defeated a squad of inexg by a score of 27-30. In the next meet, the Bulldogs by a score of 17 - 44 for their first win. In the meet e harriers lost by a sad score of 18 - 44. This year we can again give praise to a membarj df the squad, who made the honor of being All-Vocational, This Russ Gattuso of group 450. The team as a whole did Very well, behind Seneca. Major letter winners are Russell Gattuso, Joe John Hicks, Bob Solsbak, Norval Kranz, Don Standard, Stephen Joe Kuklewicz, and Tom Hore. The returning Major letter winners will be Tom Hore and Joe Eccles. Another unexpected setbzck came when two of our starting players were injured, but our coach took these unfortunate incidents in stride and put a team worthy of Bu.rgard's colors on the court. Hats off to Mr. Garcea for his masterful coaching job! With out him it would have been impossible for us to win a game Here is a brief summary on the starting five. NORVAL KRANZ - Forward Norv, the captain, was most accurate from the corner where most of his 101 points originated from. His high game was 17 points against Riverside. GARY POLIK-Forward Gary, a sophomore, was the team's top scorer with 133 points, his high game coming against Lafayette scoring 16 points. JOHN GRIMALDI - Center John was the teams most valuable player. He was one of the top re- bounders in the league and had a terrific inside shot. He hit the cirds for 85 points, his top scoring effort, 21 points, came against East. RICHARD STYPA - Guard Every team has a standout defensive performer and ours was Dick. His 'finest performence came against Fosdick- Masten where he intercepted passes left and right to lead us to our first win- He scored 72 points, his top output was 14 points against Hutch. FRANK HALL - Guard Frank was our high scoring guard scoring 132 points this season. He is only a freshman and we are looking forward to a great future for him next year. Basketball games cannot be won with only five men and we are grateful for our able substitutes who pressed the starters every minute. When Norval Kranz and John Grimaldi were injured, these boys proved they could play good ball. The event is known as the All-Vocational track meet. The four major vocational high schools are represented in this major event. They are Burgard, Emerson, Mc- Kinley, and our arch rival, Seneca. Burgard defeated two of the three rivals, but was unable to down the Seneca Indians. The Bur- gard trackmen made stiff competition all during the season. When all the statistics were tabulated, it was found that Seneca was the All-Vocational champ with 45 V2 pts., Burgard was runner-up with 28, McKinley was third with 251f2 and Emerson had 21. In individual competition, Burgard's Don Prusa- kowski captured All-Vocational honors in the shot put, with a heave of 40 feet 4 inches. Al Tompson ran a pretty second in the mile run. Paul Kurz- dorfer and Roy Crabtree ran third and fourth in the 100 yard dash. Emmett Draper registered a third in the alf-mile competition. The re- team composed of Bob 4 . mons, Ed Kimmick, Roy 'fi abtree, and John Cash fin- , ished third. Edward Schersing and Joseph D'Allesandro were responsible for winning the match against South Park. Edwin Peck and Charles Koster were the other players of the doubles matches on the team Most of our games were played at Mungovan Court in South Park and Schiller Park. Technical was rated top team followed by Bennett.
