'f .N ..Q MELVIN COLLIER GIRO F NAVARRO Presldent VICE Pres1dent Elan all NCE upon a tlme on a Saturday mornmg nn May 1947 a group of young enthuslastlc boys walted for the doors of golden opportunlty at Burgard to open to them When these doors were opened all entered wxth an object IH mmd to be accepted as members of the Burgard Vocatlonal student body After the 1nterv1ews were concluded we went home and waited for the news of our acceptance The all lmportant letter flnally arrlved To some the news was satxsfymg to others It meant that thelr dreams were shattered When the doors were opened agam 1n the fall of 1947 304 new faces were seen ln the rooms and corrldors We were freshmen wlth one goal G day fgraduatlon dayj Our fir t year was easy We broke our grammar school hablts an d learned the why s and wherefore s of hlgh school llfe We made new frlends and also perhaps a few enemles June ex ams caught up wlth us and w1th much studymg the mght before we were now fully fledged sophs Here we were sophomores and our goal was Just a lxttle closer Thls year our cross country squad brought home another trophy Exery five weeks our report cards come along and everyone hoped he would be on the honor roll Wlth the report cards also came the bug honor merlt and lmprovement roll assemblies One of these 1n partlcular we shall long remember The Star Spangled Mm trels Unfor tunately there were a xexy few of us who had to lt these assemblle out IH the salt mme because we were not on the ball It takes all kunds to make a world By thls tlme we were hlgh and mlghty Jumors and our goal was stxll closer Thxs year was a great one for the prmt mg department All the old outmoded equlpment especially m the Lltho shop was modermzed Through the combmed efforts of our lnstructors and the Board of Edu atlon we were placed h1 h on the 11st of the art of prlntlnff The avxatlon department also had 1ts day wh n It was presented w1th a Curtlss Commando C 46 mak1ng us the only school m the world to own 1tS own transport plane The electlon of class officers and movmg up day brought to vxew the fact that we had one more year to go Came the exams Some salled some sank but now most of us were semors Ah Semor ' We finally reached the top from whlch we will step 1nto llfe Along wlth the xncommg freshmen came a crew of pamters plasterers brlcklayers and carpenters to glve our old Alma Mater a face llftmg We can well re member when half the perlod was spent looklng for our class because lts usual home had been lnvaded by an army of workmen wleldlng deadly pamt brushes Fwhtmg m Korea was heaxv and wxth the pos lble threat of all out war the student body was put on edge Some of our school chums were now carrylng guns lnstead of penclls and rulers Even though a few left to Jom Uncle Sam most of us stayed to flght a dlfferent foe our final June exams How many of us w1ll recelve a dlploma IS yet unknown but we are all work mg hard so that we wont be left out 1n the cold Even though we now hate only one thought to be flnlsh ed wlth school 1n the years that follow we w1ll wlsh we had net CI left To the many who wlll be followmg 1n our foot steps we wlsh to extend wlshes for great success and a llttle ddVlC6 Work Hard JACK D HELDA WILLIAM H HI' LDA Treasurer Secretary v 5 v v '- I 5,,- ik1 2: b . 6.4 rs !'f . In my travels as a reporter cox ermg cond1t1ons m the Army I hax e come upon many facts that were not qulte up to snuff but when I saw Fort Johnson fthe men pmcked out the namej I really was ready to throw IH the towel Throughout the ranks I d1s cox ered buddles of mme who had graduated from Burgard 1n the prmtmg class of 1951 When I arrxved at camp the first place I went of course was the mess hall where I was greeted vuth the sweet aroma of Irxsh stew I found to my su1pr1se that xt was Rlchard Kochmanskl stew1ng xegetables from Ralph Haefners Jumor vegetable garden On my way out I bought an xce cream sand a concesslon from force of hablt Walkmg around the grounds I sp1ed Gerald and Jerome Ledwln and Moose M1nton cleamng garbage cans and close by Adam Greszkowlak and Art Derenda were peehng potatoes falso from Ralph Haefner s Junlor vegeta ble patch, I was lnformed by Master Sergeant VValter Pllarowskx that Paul Mye and Jerry Butler vt ere 1n charge of physlcal educatlon at the fort and that J1rn Degen and Paul Geesey took care of all the forts prmtxng Agaln I took off through the fort and on my way I came upon B111 Helda and Frank Heath shootmg baskets wuth a hand grenade Lnto a bomb casmg They 1nfo1 med me that the grounds are kept clean by Paul Kurtzdorfer and Dan Owczarzak At th1s pomt I had to due under the barracks because I saw Rlchard Boeck commg I knew he was lookmg for h1s half a buck Even under the barracks I met some of the boys Herman and Mxller snatch mg a smoke out of srght of the Commandmg Ofhcer who had made a rule about smokmg on the grounds After dodg1ng Boeck I sauntered up to the P X and found Edward Rogala Ernest Kraska and John Dollna preparlng a program for St Patrlck s Haykal who was 1nJured adJust1ng the front s1ghts on a machlne gun when Wllllam Eberhardt happen ed to pull the trlgger Joe Taurlello was also abed He got a broken leg try1ng to be first ln lme for the beer ratlon I learned that one former classmate Tom Borow1ak was deferred because he was mar r1ed and had two chlldren Of course the most 1nfluent1al and respected men 1n the fort were Lee Heuer and LOUIG Terragnoh VV1th thlngs bemg as I haxe reported above do you vt onder that John Boland IS try1ng hard to be d1s charged or transferred I you af e popu ar, ef of vers 0 afff e fdlklflg, 1 wfse, onfy fsfen g f'0 7 ' ' ' KK .73 wich from Jack Bates and Pete Heberlein who ran Day. From Monday , October 16th to Tuesday, December 12th we had no assemblies. We were rewarded for our patience though when we saw our newly decorated assembly, with new curtains and acoustical treatment. Every- one agrees that our new ceilings have done much to add to our pleasure and enjoyment. September 6, 1950. School opens at 9 A. M. The new freshmen are greeted by Mr. Kamprath. The Farm Bureau Automobile Insurance Company sponsored this safe driving demostration consisting of talks by Mr. Parker and Mr. Tewkesberry of the Farm Bureau Insur- ance Co., and Mr. Earl Basehart of the Buffalo Automobile Club. On September 1. a few lettermen returned to bolster the team. Of nearly 100 boys who came out for the squad, S2 were selected by experienced boys and Mr, Garcea. For various reasons 23 of these later dropped from the squad. Of the 59 fellows left. 23 earned major letters and 40 received squad letters. A heavy blow was dealt to the team in the shape. manner, and form of two letters from Uncle Sam . Bobby Bremer and Louis Gagola found themselves in the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after the East game. Bremer had been the promising quarterback of the Bull- dog T-formation. Versatile John Cash moved from the left half spot to take Bob's place. Cash developed into an excellent quarterback, but it took valuable time for him to adjust himself. Louis Gagola left zi hole in the line that showed a vulnerable spot until Dick Kibler corked up the gap. Then on November 26, Kibler left for the Navy. 2 Bi BB! Many times the boys played their best games against the stronger teams in the league. Beginning with a slow start the team won only one game of the first eight. Then they caught fire and won four out of their last five games, ending the season with a record of five wins against eight defeats. The highlights of the season were the well played game against Emerson, John Grimaldi's twenty-five points against Grover Cleveland and the team's record of wins and losses for the season. The team's high scorers were John Grimaldi with 154 points and Eddie Eckl, a hard driving guard, with 147 points. Joe Martucci, an exceptionally small guard, had Q9 points while Capt. John Cash had 85 points. The extremely reliable substitute, Pete Montemarano, had 75 points while Chuck Lat- tuca netted 50 points. Next year an up and coming team will represent the blue and white. Heading the parade of players will be John Grimaldi, a regular this year, and John Lang who started the last two games of this season. Emerson and McKinley followed with seventeen points each. Three Bulldog track men won first places and thereby annexed all-vocational honors. They were Bob Bremer, pole vaultg Jack Karstens, shot putg and Brad Bosley, mile. Bremer was Bulldog high scorer for the meet. He won the pole vault at 10 fcet and ran third in the 200 yard hurdles for a to- tal of seven points. Jack Karstens came close to win- ning a record to go along with his shot put champion- ship when he threw 44 feet 2 inches: only six inches off the record set in 1949 by Jim Smith of Burgard, Brad Boslcy the all vocational cross country cham- pion and record holder copped the mile event run- ning away in 4 minutes 44.5 seconds. He was unde- feated during the dual meet season. In the pole vault the Burgard vaulters scored a clean sweep. Bremer took first, Mel Collier was second at 9 feet, and Jim Innes took third at 8 feet 9 inches. Hank Sevillian, the 1949 one hundred yard dash king was defeated by Ben Vifitherspoon, who came within one tenth of a second of the record in the run. VVitherspoon also owns the 220 yard record of 22.2 seconds and the broad jump record of 21 feet 5l'j inches. Sevillian. plagued by record breakers, placed fourth in the high jump behind three six foot jumpers. Other Burgard tracknicn who scored points in the All Vocational meet were: Ed Michalowski, second in the hurdlesg Al Thompson third in the mileg Dick Grourchow, fourth in the 880g Don Prusikowski, second in the shot putg Paul Kurz- dofer and Al Barth, third and fourth respectively in the broad jump. The relay team which placed third was composed of Bob Simmons, Ed Micha- lowski, Ed Andrzejewski. and John Downs. Quen- tin Steele, a member of the 1949 championship and record holding relay team, suffered a pulled leg muscle and failed to recover in tune for the All Vocational meet. Returning for the 1951 season are: Don Prusa- kowski, Al Thompson. Paul Kurzdorfer, Bob Sim- inons, Ed Kimmick, Dick Stypa, Ernie Turner, who competed in the All Vocational meet, and Walt Meier, Clifford Lutz, Alois Przywara, and Bob Tate who ran on the freshmen relay team which placed second. The outstanding performance of the year came in the high jump, when Aaron Page of Seneca set a city scholastic high jump record of 6 feet, ZM1 in- ches. Bob Wilson of Seneca broke the 440 yard mark of 53.3 seconds set by Burgard's Frank Gawlik by two-tenths of a second when he ran that event against Burgard in our dual meet with Seneca. Other members of the Burgard squad who com- peted during the season were Donald Standard, Frank Heath, Thomas Borowiak, Ernie Turner, Ed Canty, Joe Miller, Henry Vogt, Russell Gattuso, Harold Parker, and Donald McClune. Of these, those returning will be Don Standard, Frank Heath, Russ Gattuso, and Henry Vogt. Seneca ahead of Thompson in the mile. ,.,:V5,fHf?.2 RYA Q wah 1 1 -f 'Eid ffff I 5,2 3 ,Q I xv 37104151 This year s intramural football was a great success Nearly every roll call group participated there be 1ng 37 teams in competition when the season started on September 18 and finished on November 10 The champion groups were 140 204 330 and 401 The latter became the school champions Thls team had many outstandlng players such as Al Schmitter Nlck Dmezza Don Patt and Fred Lmdner In the sem1 finals the freshmen beat the sophomores 6-0 and the seniors defeated the Juniors by the same score The champ1onsh1p game was 12 0 in favor of the sen1ors Wlth 38 roll call groups represented by teams the mtramural basketball season this year began on January 2 and ended March 1 After successive ehmmations group 100 won the leadership of the freshmen group 206 showed itself leadmg the sophomores group 302 won over its junior competx tors and group 401 led the semor teams In the final game for the school championship group 401 again came to the fore wmnmg the basketball tournament as it had won the football crovm The softball intramural competltlon began in mid April too late to report in this account Last year s competltlon 1n which 35 team s took part was won by groups 107 251 304 and 451 In the playoffs for the outstanding softball team of the school the Jumors of group 304 walked off w1th the honors It is expec ted that this years competitlon will be as mterestmg and as well part1c1pated in as was last year s 4f 'ff' '- The spring of 1950 got under way with a new ad dition to the busy season s sport program Through Mr Crotty s fine coaching and superv1s1on the tenms enthus1asts came out with high hopes for a success ful season Surprisingly enough they acquired sev eral good players cons1der1ng the fact that It was the first year a varsity seven was teamed at Burgard Among the th1rty some odd players who were 1n terested m makmg the team twelve were chosen Of these twelve men seven were chosen to part1c1 pate and the squad was composed of the remaining five The varsity seven mcluded Ken Miller top man of the team who played first singles position with tremendous form In second smgles position Chuck Herman gave h1s opponents a net full of trouble because of his fast and smooth style in covering the court The third singles man was Al Lewls, who al ways gave a fine performance with his hard smash services and pass balls The first doubles mcluded Dick Voght and Dick Tudor who were quite vlcton ous in their matches because of the team work be tween them In second doubles Sam Gonnella and helllly Anne pldyeu Edlcll IIIHLLII wnu Cdllllfblf uxstcl. mmation to win relying on their tr1cky net playmg and accurate services The matches got underway after weeks of hard practlce The opener was with the defending cham p1ons Kensmgton who blanked Burgard 5 to 0 The second game was with Techmcal who equaled Ken s strength and score After playing two of the best schools of the league the team saw what lt was up against Gammg ln knowledge and that much needed experience the team went on through the eleven matches winning three of them When it 1S consider ed that this was Burgard's first year ln tennis com pet1t1on it must be admitted that the showing made by the team was more than satisfactory I , ' . . . . . 9 - , - , , .. .
