We've had four shifts, around the clock, twenty-tour hours a day. It has all been so sim- ple because there has been square-dealing, give and take and co-otperation on the part of everybody. Harmony has been the watchword of our all-out effort. With it, we'll do more than our share to put Uncle Sam in first place. I There are 5256 of us now in this school. Since luly, 1940, seven ltraining, programs have been conducted here involving a total of 22,431 trainees. We are proud and jealous of this school's record as an Arsenal ot Dentooracyf' We've taken these words to heart. . ln the one and one-halt years just passed, We've gone from peacle-time to defense-time to war-time, and have stepped up our vocational training pro- gram llOO'Wi. Think of it! ln placements of pre-employment trainees alone, We've passed the 5000th mark. This old school is riding like a destroyer in a gale. l I l , I We're turning out men to build vital parts ot bombing planes, fighters and pursuits. Our skilled trainees are Working on trucks, tanks, engines, ships, shells, and machine guns. By running the school doy and night, weve pyr- amid our capacity ond literally added 230,000 sgucire teet to our operating floor space. Our crowded working conditions are os good as we can make them in these abnormal times. Welre guarding our health and safety at work. And we are working harder and faster thon we've ever worked before. We---all of us---boys, graduates, troinees and teachers, ore seeing this job through TOGETHER. As the year passed speedily away, Burgard was to find that among these freshmen were boys that would bring honors to the school. The most promising athletes were Alex Stefaniak playing basket- ball and George Wessel playing football. Aside from sporting events, nothing meritorious was accomplished in our freshman year. Our sophomore year brought great changes. Gone were our freshman days and O45 ambitious sophomores, we were determined to set an exarnple for the fresh- men by excelling in school activities. Alex Stefaniak became captain of the varsity basketball team and scored many points throughout the season. He was also a good player on our baseball team. As we attained the third rung of the ladder of education, our junior year, we went all-out for our Alma Mater. The football team distinguished themselves by winning every single game of the season, including our first Thanksgiving Day, beating Riverside, 6 to O. However, we wound up in third place in the league. lnterclass touch football was first introduced in the school and Group 301 became the school champions. They were also the junior basketball champions. Finally, came our senior year. Henry Banas was our football star. Andrew Bottaro brought glory to the school by attaining the highest rating in scholastic marks in the history of vocational education in Buffalo. His remarkable average was 9925. During his entire high school career, Andrew Bottaro has never been absent, tardy only once, and has been on the honor roll every single period. For our senior class officers we elected our star baseball player, Hay- mond Macieiewski, presidentp our cheerleader, Wallace O'Connor, vice- president: Chester Kryszczuk, secretary, and Rocco Romano, treasurer. As we complete our high school education, we find a war-mad world, torn with greed and hatred. With our own beloved United States battling forits exist- ence, we grimly face the task that is before us. Witli memories still lingering, We depart confident that the training given us at Burgard will carry us through the troubles of life and make us a credit to our Alma Mater. . .VAS ROCCO ROMANO Treasurer GEORGE WESSEL Sports Edifcr in l ' Glafu In the year 1939 approximately four hundred eager freshmen entered Burqard Vocational-high school. Each boy resolved to attain success. He desired to bring honor to himself and to his school. Many distinguished themselves in the field of athletics and in extra-curricular activities. T Two outstanding members of the Iunior class are Robert Walters and Iules Goldberg. They have been on the honor roll for every marking period since their freshman year and, in addition to this, Walters has a record of' never being tardy or absent. The Iunior class has been well represented in interclass activities. During the freshman year, Group 104 won the interclass championship: in the sophomore year Group 233 won the basketball and football championships. The following year showed much talent. Group 331 won both the lunior and School cham- pionships in basketball. l Many Iuniors indulged in varsity sports. Art Amborski is an all-around athlete and the only three-letter man. All-vocational honors were received by Kasper Chermaz and Art Amborski. They were among the first five men in the final cross-country meet. l With these and many other capable students returning to Burgard fdr their senior year, all should excel in academic and athletic endeavors. It is one upon which every other business, every pro- fession, every trade, is in some measure de- pendent. It is a business of which to be proud and one giving opportunity to those engaged in it to have a hand in every branch ot the world's great commercial and social schemes. lt is a business that demands character, backbone, and intelligence ii one is to achieve even moderate success. Sl X ging lack Baiocco versus Muscles Platek. Oh, by the way, Baiocco beat loe tLouis last month by a close decision. Louis is now enjoying his 70th year as a fighter. As yet, neither boy has appeared, so I will spend some time telling you about the celebrities present. Over there I see George Bailey, owner, writer, and de- liverer of the Buffalo Evening News. With him is Bob Moyer, owner of the Nu- Way Markets in this fair city. Well, here is a surprise. loe Pendolino, the ddie Duchin of our time, has just come in. Accompanying him is his ace dru mer, Gene Krupa Kluytrnan. Sitting a few seats over is Ray Tomasziewski, the gasoline midget, wholowns a string of Gulf stations throughout the country. He is whispering something to George Wessel, who is now physical director of the school 23 kindergarten. I guess almost every sport has its representatives here tonight, for now coming in is Bill Degen, the winner of the Caddies National Open Golf Tourn ment. With him is Tom Harmon Felski, now bench-warmer for the Kindergarten ears. The boys still haven't appeared yet, but here come their managers. Ray owa- lewski is managing Baiocco, while Benny Derenda is the manager of Hlatek. They say a bitter dispute has crept between these two, but we don't believe it. Sitting directly behind us is Don Mueller, who is wrestling here for the cham- pionship of the world. With him is Red Heyer, the great miler the thinksl. Over there three peanut boys, Ganczak, Dobiesz, and Hammer, are g tting yelled at for loafing on the job-as usual. Reiereeing the match is Harry Scharf, who at one time had ambitions bf be- coming a printer. He should live so long! I Hiter the fight, Professors Iohn Hodgson, Louis Konicki, and Ted Paul, having just returned from the National Riveters' Convention of 1962 held in Berlin, Germany tincidently, Germany is now being dictated to by Harpo Hornung, who killed Hitler with a paper wadl wish to tour the town to see how thelPrint- ing Class of 1942 is making out, so we have decided to show them. l The first people we came across were Mutt and Ieit, we mean Fran Tctalsma and Henry Woods, cleaning out the sewer in front of Mayor Baron's oiiice. Being hungry, we asked Tolsrna and Woods where we could get a good meal cheap and were promptly directed to the Amoroso and Neudeck Cliinese Lunch located at No. 5, the Towpath. We soon reached the Towpath and there was the Amoroso and Neudeck Chinese Lunch, advertising c rned beef and garbage as its main plate. After a delicious meal of Phil's c rned beef and garbage, we ordered a plate of oysters. Dick, co-proprietor, tald us that these oysters were brought in every day fresh by the Forster and Fix Oy- ster Corporation. Continuing on our journey, we came to a large sign which advertised a wrestling match between Pounder Pete Blidy and Atrocious Antos, the champ. The next thing that came into our view was the Kosciuch and Hem- merling Press. The five of us almost fell over when we thought that at least two printers had made good. A large sign on the door read Kosciuch and He mer- ling, pressmen. Nuts, we were wrong-it was a tailor shop. Being tired, alle de, cided to call it a day and entered the Ganczak Hotel, which featured the music of The Three Singing lrishmen, Podlesinski, Sacilowslci, and Sledziewvski. These graduates are keenly aware that they are fortunate indeed to qraduate in a course so vital to the nations defense, and at a time when the aviation industry needs trained personnel, ln his senior year each student is allowed to prepare for that branch of the aviation industry for which he thinks he is best fitted. The school year ot 1941-1942 completes the second chapter in the existence ot Burqard Annex. This second chapter furnishes another record of accomplish- ment which can be attributed only to a truly sincere school spirit. Concrete evidence ot this spirit is evidenced by the manner in which the student body responded to every call tor cooperation issued by Mr. Engel. ln addition to studies these may be listed as C11 national defense eitort, C21 attendance records, t31 club activities, and U11 athletic tournaments. The national defence erlort is best indicated by the student record tor stamp and bond sales and in the voluntary contributions ot books tor service organi- zationsf both oi which tar exceeded expectations. The attendance record, not tully compiled at the time ot publication, was well in excess of 95 per cent. ln like manner, the athletic tournaments conducted by Mr. Mineo enjoyed unprecedented success. Tho separate tourneys embracing the entire year were run oil successfully with a minimum number oi torteits. Group 140 won the toucli-football trophy while the basketball trophy was obtained by Group 136. Membership in these clubs was entirely voluntary and all activities were held after school hours. The eagerness of the students served to keep each club at peak registration and enabled the members to derive great benefit from these extra curricular activities. A list of these clubs, as here given, will indicate the varied interests of the student body: Bowling Club, Town Meeting Club, Hobby Club, Tennis Club, Aviation Clubs ltwol, Chess and Checkers Club, Music Club, Cheerleaders, Monitors Club, and the Press Club. ln addition to these, were the Dramatic Club and Public Speaking Club which functioned during the second semester. The school year was marked by several successful assemblies which included talks by prominent speakers, films on various subjects, and athletic assemblies, at which trophies were presented to intramural champions. Ot special note were the memorable visits to the main building for the Christmas assembly, for the inter-school basketball game and for the Moving-up-day program. We will serve you four and twenty hours a day! -Rudyard Kipling AUTOMOBILE an mstrument of American progress The Automobile Department of Burgard pro- vided the training of truck drivers and repair- men for the United States Army Motor Trans- port corps in 1918. Enlisted men were instruct- ed in the mechanics, practical driving, care and repair of motor transport vehicles. Fol- lowing the War, large numbers oi ex-soldiers were assigned to the Burgard Automobile Department for training in automobile main- tenance and repair. The soldier rehabilita- tion Courses were conducted from 1920 to 1924. Many graduates of the tour year day vocational courses and the evening school trade improvement courses have responded to the call of our country and are now serv- ing in important positions in the manufac- ture, maintenance and repair oi mechan- ized units. Guy Isaac Smith was that Tree of Life. The roots of intregity, fidelity, determination, thoughtfulness, were deeply planted in firm ground. Love of his worvk and ability to work with others were char- acteristics which enhanced his devoted life. His work with boys was a pleas- ure to behold, and one of his greatest joys was knowing that a Burgard boy had succeeded in his work. Fruits of Guy Smiths labors will long be remem- bered by both students and teachers. How sad it is to think that more could not have come within shade of his branches of brotherly feeling and sincere friendship. God sees fit to deprive man of some of his most cherished posses- sions. Few schools have the number ot clubs maintained by our taculty mem- bers who are willing to act not only as teachers but also as advisers. For the mechanically minded student the Electrical Experimenters club, Practical Mechanics club, En- gineering society, Aviation Research club, and Or- namental Metal club are only a few ot the many offered. Then, for relaxation and enjoyment, there are the Outdoor Lite club, Checker club, Chess club, T-lobbies and Models club. A tunelul air is added by the splendid work of the Orchestra, Band, Glee club, File, Drum and Bugle corps and the Harmonica band, bringing us many hours of musical enjoyment throughout the year. A few additional societies are the Camera club. Dra- matic club, Glider club, Speedboat club, Materials Testing club, and the Experimental club. lt is, indeed, an interesting sight to visit any one of the clubs and notice the enthusiasm and pleasure displayed by the members. The contests, projects and campaigns undertaken by these societies all ways provide keen competition and promote the in- terest of the entire student body. This group takes an important part in our school lite. Mr. Weis The Glee club has fifty members and cer- tainly has lived up to the standard of past groups, this year. This club, along with the Orchestra, Dance Orchestra, Hccordion Band and Band members, all played a lead- ing role in the annual Variety show. These musical groups, along with the Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps, certainly offer a Wealth of opportunity to learn and acquire musical experience while at Burgard. In addition to the schooling and wonderful shop experi- ence, Burgard offers as an extra-curricular activity a musical opportunity as fine as that of any Buiialo school. Sept. 10-Mr. Garcea and Mr. Elliott spoke concerning the athletic situation and the sale of ticket books. Mr. Weis asked for a better response to his call for music students. Sept. 17-First cheer rally of the foot- ball season, The cheerleaders introduced new cheers and songs in preparation for the Technical game. Mr. Kamprath read notices announcing the formation of several new clubs. Sept. 24-Mr. Hacker, of the Grosvenor Library music staff, gave a very inter- esting talk on the history of iazz and swing music. His talk was well illustrat- ed by means of recordings of famous personages in this field of music. Sept. 26--Football rally. Mr. Garcea introduced the team to a very enthusias- tic student body. Oct. l-Mr. Collins introduced Mr. Wal- ter Snell. of the Greater Buffalo Adver- tising Club. Mr. Snell extended an in- vitation to attend the annual exhibit of the club in the Hotel Statler. This year's exhibit is to have as i's theme: National Defense Preparation. Oct. 8-Mr. Wall, sales promotion sup- erintendent of the Texas Oil company. gave us an interesting talk on the pro- duction of oil before showing a tech- nicolor picture, Deep Horizons. The picture showed the process of locating and producing oil. Mr. Wall was assist- ed by Mr. Anderson of the Texas com- pany. Mr. Weis introduced Mr. Anthony Pecora, well-known concert violinist. Mr. Kamprath read ln Flanders Fields and then talked of the necessity of defend- ing what others had dled for. The scope of the defense program was described to show the part that the schools are taking in the present emergency. Nov. l7-First victory assembly of the football season. Our team won their first victory when they pounced on Masten to the tune of 20 to 0 in the last scheduled game. Nov. 19-Thanksgiving assembly. Mr. Roberts played the organ while the students marched into the assembly. The lights were dimmed and a picture of the Pilgrims on their way to church was flashed on the screen. After several Thanksgiving songs were sung Mr. Ellicott presented the Hmerlcan Legion Baseball trophy to the Burgard team. Nov. 26-Mr. Harvey Guenther paid tri- bute to the memory of Mr. Guy Smith who passed away Monday, Nov. 24, in school. The assembly sang Abide With Me. and remained standing in silent prayer. Dec. 3-Mr. Doebert introduced Mr. Schreiber of the Cleveland Twist Drill Co. Mr. Schreiber spoke briefly on the importance of intelligent handling of drllfs. Mr. Gar- cea introduced Mr. lames Peele, ass't professor of physical education at the University of Buffalo. Mr. Peele, who is also coach of the University team, gave a very interesting talk on football. Mr. Eugene Hofmeister, supervisor of physical education in the high schools, presented the letters. Dec. l7-Bill of Rights anniversary assembly. This program consisted of several readings by boys from the senior class. Feb. ll-World Brotherhood Week. Rabbi H. Elihu Rickel of Temple Beth El spoke on Abraham Lincoln. His talk was, at the same time, appropriate to the observance' of World Brotherhood Week, Feb. l8-We were privileged to wit- ness an excellent picture depicting the career cf the Great Emancipator from his childhood in a crude log cabin in Kentucky to a martyr in the White House. Feb. 25-Honor Roll assembly. Mr. Welsh congratulated the pupils on the honor roll before introducing Mr. Breach. music supervisor of the Buffalo schools. Mr. Breach acted as a narrator in an excellent Songalcgue of America which traced American folk music from early time to the present. We Americans have always proved to be great sportsmen and are willing to take a victory or a defeat with a smile. Sports in high schools are very essential and should be encouraged at all times. This sports section is to give people who are not acquainted with our school a better idea of oru' extensive sports program, in war or peace, and to honor those athletes who have devoted their time to make great sports teams for Burqard. The necessity for a high school education is of the utmost importance. Likewise a better knowledge of sports and an active participation is essential. While young people earn their Way through lite an education will prove very valuable, and their understanding of sports will enable them to make friends easily. A I - Mr. Garcea Aw-5, V ' Mr. Lynch The BULLDQG The Burgard Football team opened its regular season against Technical high school. ln this first game, a much outweighed and inexperi- enced Burgard eleven was beaten by the En- gineers of Tech to the tune of 20 to 6. Although the .game ended disastrously for the Bulldogs. they managed to gain much experience for fu- ture tilts. The second Harvard cup game was with South Park high. They also tamed the Burgard Bull- dog, this time doing it quite decisively, with the score standing at 25 to O, in the Sparks fa- vor, at the games end, ln their next clash against East l-ligh, the Bull- dogs once again were taken into camp. Once more the now ever-improving Bulldogs, were completely outweighed and were matched against a more experienced team. However, the Bulldogs held their own remarkably well and gave the Orientals a good scrap. The fourth game was against our traditional ,.vals, Seneca. ln this game the Bulldog ground attack was clicking heautifully, but the team's weakness against a passing offense decided the game. The Bulldogs had more first downs than the lndians, but an intercepted pass and a completed pass helped Seneca to win, i4 to U. The fifth and final game on the Burgard sched- ule was against Masien. For the third time in the season, the Bulldogs were outweighed but were not to be outdone in experience. The Bull- dogs got off to an early lead and followed through with another quick touchdown to lead at half time, l4 to O. Then in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs scored their third and final touch- down on the recovery of a blocked punt in the end zone, making the final score 20 to O. Down he goes before he gets started. B .... The Burgard quintet opened the season at home against McKinley and won 39 to 30. The Bulldogs won their second game at Lafayette, but when they invaded the Kensington court they were in high spirits but were soon hum- bled by the Knights 32 to 30. The Burgard lads once again broke into the Winning column by defeating South Park 38 to 27. This was the second year that the Bulldogs had defeated the Sparks. In the next three games, all the aspirations the Bulldogs might have had for first place tumbled when the Bulldogs lost to Riverside 28 to 27, Technical 36 to 20, and to Bennett 45 to 34. This did not stop the Bulldogs though. ln their next game against highly rated Grover Cleveland, the Blue and White scored a decisive 48 to 32 victory. The Bulldogs then went on to defeat their two vocational school rivals, Seneca and Emerson. Our next game against lowly rated Masten was an upset for the Bulldogs, losing 2l to 35. ln their last regu- larly scheduled game, the Bulldogs gave a close decision to East High 34 to 30. The last game, which was a post-season encounter against Hutch, was sweet revenge for the Bull- dogs. Last year Hutch beat Burgard by one point and this year the Bulldogs turned the tables and beat the Brownies at their own game, squeezing out a 37 to 36 victory. 'Track The Burgard Track team in 1941 opened its season against Emerson High school and won its first meet with little oppo- sition. ln this meet the Bulldogs placed a first mari in eight of the eleven events. The second meet of the season turned out much the same as the first. The Bulldogs once again were victorious and confident of an easy victory over Seneca in the final dual meet. In their final preliminary meet of the season, the Bulldogs were against a surprisingly strong Seneca team and through overconfidence were easily subdued by a wide margin. Gene Ziombek leading the way Wfgihai .lk - 'hack ln the final and most important meet of the Track season the Bulldogs Went into the meet with a firm determination to upset the lndians and once more to win not only the H11-Vocational, but to capture the Butler Trophy. Although they possessed the willingness and determination to win. the Bulldogs lacked the ability to do the trick. They lost the final All-Vocational meet by two points. The final standings and scores of each team are as follows: Seneca- 48w, Burgard-MSM, McKinley-l4,and Emerson-l2. ln the final Hll-Vocational meet, Burgard placed five men in first place, Seneca five, and McKinley one. The only double winner of the meet was William Wilson, who scored not only in the Pole Vault but also in the High lump. Bill Wilson ready to break the all-vocational pole vault record. B The Burgard Bulldog Baseball team closed the l94l season with four wins against two losses. The final standing ot the team in the Yale Cup League contributed largely to the reason for the Bulldogs ending in second place for the Butler trophy stand- ing. Early in the season, the Bulldogs were rated with a slight chance ot ending among the first ten teams. To the amazement of everyone, including Coach Mr. Lynch, the Burgard team played heads up ball. At the end of the regular season, the Bulldogs were in third place in League two. ln the playoff between league one and two, the Blue and White played Bennett High school to decide which team would end filth in the final standings oi both leagues. H8 xy t A ' J ' 1 . 04444 eau As in previous years, Burgards hill and dale bcys practiced strenuously at Delaware Park under the watchful eye ot their :aa-th, Mr. Lynch. Twice around the lake is the regular dual meet curse, about 2.7 miles in length. Arthur Qmborski, without any doubt, was the best runner. The spark plug ot the team, however, was Kasper Chermaz. Reveal- ing his school- spirit, he pepped up the boys before each race, thus helping his team mates win three meets tor Burgard. The tirst meet gave Buraard a victory over Emerson by the score at 120 to 28. ln their second encounter, our team lost the meet to Seneca with a score of 25 to 30. They were victorious in the third -:ontest with McKinley, having a score ot 27 to 28. The most important meet of the year, the All-vocational Cross-country run brought another victory to Burgard with rr score of 4l points. Every moment, day and night, for twenty-four hours round-the-clock, Burgard Vocational high school's production lines have been working to train men and women for America's war industries. The air- craft factories, the armament plants, the steel mills and ship yards are on all-out speed-up schedules and we have joined with them to produce the workers to keep 'em rolling and keep 'em flying. Since Iuly, 1940, this old school has been riding like a destroyer in a gale. Five thousand, six hun- dred and eighty trainees who entered as green help and took pre-employment courses are already placed in jobs: and from thirty to fifty others join their ranks each week. Eighteen thousand, two hun- dred and fifty-six students from the war plants came to take supplementary and upgrading courses ranging from mold-loft work to leadmanship. Burgard's rivet guns have driven millions of rivetsg metal saws have cut countless templets as patterns for parts: high speed electric motors have drilled thousands of holes: gas and electric welding torches have fused together myriads of steel sections in shipyard construction: spot-Welding machines have passed electricity through miles of non-stressed alu- minum sections: lathes and grinders and millers have turned out endless varieties of machined parts. Men have been busy learning how to get things done. And women's dexterous hands are now tak' ing over to fill the gaps left by those leaving for the front.
