N Wa Senior History CLASS FLOWER f GARDENIA CLASS COLORS -- BED AND WHITE In the spring of l9b9 thirteen graduates of the Bureau Township Grade School re- ceived their eighth grade diplomas. They were Lester Meisenheimer, Jack Andersen, Donald Johnson, Damian Girten, Barbara Johnson, Shirley Lange, Greg Saxum, Shirley Hubbard, Phillip Naffzlger, Elizabeth Sims, Luclle Brigham, Roger Swanson, and Jerry Klingenberg. Except for Barbara Johnson, who went to Manllus, all returned as fresh- men in the fall of 1949. Donald Steele joined us from Walnut. During the first year we elected Greg Saxum, president, Lester Meisenhelmer, vice president, Jack Andersen, secretary, Donald Johnson, treasurer, and Lucile Brigham, reporter. Miss Naomi Ra- venscroft was the class sponsor. As a money making project the members popped corn and sold it at the games. Soon after this project was started, the school purchased a popcorn machine. The use of this machine was shared with the Juniors. The group was given the traditional initiation by the Sophomores. For three days festivities were carried on, cllmaxed with a party., The girls in home economics class celebrated their birthdays by making birthday cakes. On two occasions the boys were invited to refreshments prepared by the girls. An all school Halloween party was sponsored by the class. Several of the class members took part in the one-act play contest. The play tied for third place in the county contest. During the Sophomore year, Greg Saxum enrolled at princeton, and Roger Munson Joined the class. Damian Girten left at the first of the year. Later we were sorry to hear of his death. Elizabeth Sims moved to Tiskilwa in December. The class offl- cers for the year were, Lester Melsenhelmer, president, Donald Johnson, vice presl- dent, Shirley Lange, secretary, Lucile Brigham, treasurer, and Phillip Naffziger, re- porter. Miss Ravenscroft was again the class sponsor. As Scphomores, the members were privileged to initiate the freshmen, have charge of the commencement flowers, and have the candy-selling concession for the school year. At the start of the Junior year Phillip Naffziger enrolled at Princeton. Class officers were elected as follows: Lester Meisenheimer, presidentg' Lucile Brigham, vice president, Donald Johnson, secretary, Jack Andersen, treasurer, and Shirley Lange, reporter. Mr. Gillingham was the class sponsor. As Juniors the members spon- sored the Junior-Senior banquet which was held at the Hotel Kewanee. The class play, 'A Pair of Country Kids' was presented and enjoyed by all. Donald Steele had charge of the stage production. ' Now, it is our Senior year. There have been no changes in membership and Mr. Gillingham is again our class sponsor. Two new faculty members, Mrs. Iona Burgess, and Miss Donna Skinner, Joined the high school staff. The class officers elected are Donald Steele, president, Jack Andersen, vice president, Lucile Brigham, secretary, Shirley Lange, treasurer, and Roger Munson, reporter. Naturally, the main activity of this year was the production of the 'Beuro'. We were given an early opportunity to organize the staff and contract for the book. Ads were sold and much copy of the book was mailed for printing before December 15, 1952. As this goes to press we have had our Chicago trip and are looking forward to our class play, Senior Banquet, and graduation. fw na. s Q Kb! kg Su 6 Senior Prophecy It is spring of 1953 and we are graduating, wondering what the future will hold for each of us. Perhaps if Old Mother Nature would gaze into her crystal ball she would see such scenes as sheep peacefully grazing over a five thousand acre ranch in Texas. In the distance are several oil derricks slowly pumping away. Yes, Donald Steele 1s doing very nicely for himself. Many of the largest woolen mills in the country purchase the wool from his sheep, and the oil from those wells is just an added way to increase his income tax troubles. Sons Harvey. Noel. Alfred, and Joey will be taken in as partners before long. Don believes this will interest them in the ranch and keep them from going to the big city to live. the bright lights of Hollywood and a movie theatre. After a time a class meeting was called, with Mr. Franklin serving as class sponsor, and the following class officers were elected: Richard Mills, presidentg Rita Hoover, vice-president, Harold Carlson treasurer, Carol Cohrs, secretary, and Jay Meisenheimer, reporter. During their first year in high school, this group sold ice cream bars and coffee at the home games and during the noon periods to raise class funds. In future years the student of today may serve his community as a school board member, an alderman, a trustee, a supervisor, or a legislator. He may serve society as a treasurer of a church, a lodge, a hospital, or a parent- teacher association. In each instance he will need an under- standing of fundamental principles of business. These courses prepare the student for life ahead. Yu.. in HOM MAKING DEPARTMENT The goals of a home making department from their very nature set themselves apart from other phases of the high school curriculum. Because of the great importance given it, the State and National Government concern themselves in its subject matter and procedures. A democracy rests upon the foundation created by its concerns itself with not only information getting, but a practice in a work shop as nearly comparable to a home as life here is carried on purposefully in an atmosphere of the efficient leadership of Miss Skinner. The goals of Bureau Township are the same as stated nat1on's homes. Home making learning of skills put into can be obtained. Our school ease and friendliness, under so well by one Illinois Home Economics Educator, Isabel Befier. nWe learn here to make our homes socially respon- sible and spiritually insp1r1ng.' The Bureau Township Band activities of 1952-1953 were started on August ll, 1952 at which time the band took part at the Illinois State Fair. Of twenty-five partici- pating bands in the small school class, Bureau Township won first place. In a school assemble on September 12, Mr. Blocher presented the Governor's Trophy from the Fair, along with medals to all band members. On Saturday, November 1, 1952, the band journeyed to Macomb, where they partici- pated in the homecoming festivities at Western Illinois State Teachers College. These activities included a street marching contest and an opportunity to take part in the making up of a mass band. A second rating was received in this contest. The certifi- cate of award ls now framed and has been placed ln the hallway to the new gymnasium, On November 28, 1952, for the third consecutive year, the Bureau Township band marched in Peor1a's WSanta Claus Day' parade. On Friday, March 27, 1953, the band will present its annual spring concert for the community. In April the band will represent our school at the District Music Con- test at Toulon, Illinois.
