'He graduated from Cathedral Latin School in 1972, and the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1977 where earned a Bachelor of Science in Operations Anahrsis. After graduating from the Surface Warfare Officer School in October 1972 CDR Thompson reported to the USS CONNOLE CFF 1 0 5 6 Q. He was assigned as First Lieutenant and subsequenthr asAnti-Submarine Warfare Omcer completing deployments to the Mediterranean in 1977 and 1980 In February 1981, CDR Thompson wasasszgned to thestajfofCommander3 NavalSurface G'roupFourinNewportj RhodeIslandasCombat Systems Officer: In May 1983, he received aMasteris Degree in MarineAf7fairs from the University ofRhodeIsland After graduating from the Surface Warfare Department Head course in December 1983, CDR Thompson was sent to the Charleston based Destroyer USS DEYO CDD 9892 as Operations Ojjicer He participated in special operations in the Central American region, several fleet exercises in the Western Atlantic and drug interdiction operations in the Caribbean basin. In january 1986 CDR Thompson was transferred to the Guided Missile Destroyer USS KIDD CDDG 99 3 Q homeported in Norfolk, Wrginia. In 1987 he completed a deployment to theArabian Gulf which included A Operation EARNEST WILL, the escort of lreflagged Kuwaiti tankers during the Iran rlraq Tanker-war. He participated in f Operation NIMBLE ARCHER, the US. retaliatorystrilee againstIranisRevolutionary Guard facility atRostam. After graduating from theArrned Forces suyjfcozzege injubr 1988 he was assrgrwaio headquarters ofthe Commander in Chief US Atlantic Command as an exercise planner and Head joint Training Branch. He also served as Naval Liaison Officer to the US Southern Command during Operation jUST CAUSE the US invasion of Panama. He became the Executive Officer of USS BUNKERHLLL CCG-522 inNovember 1990 He participated in Operation DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM during which B UNKER HILLserved as theA'ntiAir Warfare command ship for the largest coalition of maritime forces Since the Second World War CDR Thompson was Momoted to his current rank in june 1991.
