Captains Log ll of us who sailed in USS BUNKER HILL during the events depicted in these pages particwated in making history. The past year produced watershed changes in our world, in our Navy and in ourselves. The signwcance of some changes may be lost on younger crewmembers since their total Navy experience base is still relativehf short. For us Old Salts and Cold Warriors, the pace and scope ofthe changes were quite dramatic. We witnessed the passing of familiar places, practices and assumptions we had grown up thinking were permanent parts ofthe landscape. Concurrentbz, we saw the emergence of new priorities, policies and attitudes that were' often quite unfamiliar to our previous Navy environment Let me summarize a few of the high points of the past year: 'We hid a sad farewell to ninetyfour years of US. Navy presence in the Republic of the Philippines. 'Waking up one day- to the sudden absence of major adversaries at sea and vainbl scanning the horizon for the next signwcant naval threat .we realized that the era of blue water naval warfare may have passed from the scene forever. 'As BUNKER HILL visited familiar ports, we learned that regional allies will require new rationale to sustain the close ties that we had come to take for granted during the Cold War. y -Participation in Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and various regional littoral exercises conhrmed that all future US. military operations will be joint operations. -Such diverse events as T ailhook, end ofthe Cold War and election ofa newfldministration in Washington have all done their part in sounding the death knell of business as usual conduct of our ajfairs. We must now cope with revised standards of conduct and drasticalbf constrained resources while demonstrating receptiveness to new ideas, unaccustomed roles and unfamiliar scenarios. We in BUNKER HILL are not afraid of change, because change is essential for progress. These will be exciting and challenging times for us. Most of us joined the Navy to see the world, but also to do something personal about making ita better place. Naval forces will have a key role in assuring regional securigf and stabilizy We sailors can be on the cutting edge of domestic social development inside the lifelines as well. Send us in, coach! B UNKER HILL has always been where the action is and is likebf to remain in the forefront in the months ahead. Lest we forget the real sacrmces are borne by those wonderful wives and loved ones we leave behind to fend for themselves, safeguard our treasures and cheer us on. Without your steadfast support none of our efforts or accomplishments would be possible. Your love and encouragement keep us going and sustain our belief that we are dedicating our lives to something worth jighting for. It is to you, our families, that this B UNKER HILL Cruise Book is ajfectionatebf dedicated Captain, US. Navy Commanding fi I , . I Y Q T i
