FOUR QUALIFY FOR FORENSIC FINALS FRONT ROW; L-R: Norine Blubaugh, Marla Marden, Helen Short, Melody Fales, Terry Woodcock, Candee Landis, Liz Gransden, Kathy Robinson, Audrey Short; SECOND ROW: Jan Foote, Vicki Ogg, Nancy Terwilliger, Gail English, Beth Plueddemann, Beth Hill, Toni Feffries, Barb Hull, Peggy Jackson, Barb Kirk, Fred Warner, Advisor; TOP ROW: Dale Beach, Jared Carlin, Gavin Frantz, Dan Ginter, Fred Brown. The highlight of the 1970 forensic season was the qualifying of four students to com - pete in the state finals, Dale Beach (Oratory) and Mary Linton (Humorous reading) re- ceived firsts at Regionals to qualify. Jim Morgan (Radio News) was awarded a second, and Toni Jeffries (Serious Interpretative Reading) won a third. All four were also rated superior at the regional festival. Toni Jeffries received fifth place at the state finals, A second highlight was Melody Fales, third place finish in humorous reading at the Battle Creek Invitational. Mary Linton and Dale Beach display their plaques for first place wins in regionals. Jim Morgan, and Toni Jeffries (not pictured) placed second and third, respectively in their divisions.

VARSITY DEBATERS Kim Parker, Jan Foote, Sue Peasley, Fred Brown. Resolved: That Congress should prohibit unilateral United States intervention in foreign coun- tries, The Lancer Debaters argued their way into the State Semi- Finals, for the fourth time in seven years, when they finished in a three way tie for seventh in the state. They compiled a total seasons record of 71 wins and 57 losses, many of the loss- es coming from Class A schools. They captured first place in the North Central league, second place in the CMU and the Mid- State novice leagues, and third in the Mid-State Varsity League. Fred Brown compiled a 21-9 personal record and was named top speaker in district compe- tition, thus qualifying for the Detroit Free Press scholarship contest.
