The Lance staff, in selecting the theme for the 1963 yearbook, gives recognition to the fact that Bullard in its eighth year has come of age. Traditionally an academic minded high school with emphasis on individual achievement in all forms of competition, the Knights are now recognized contenders in all team endeavors, as well. From the first provisional student government which met in the summer of 1955 to select the theme Knights and the colors Columbia and Navy blue to the Class of l962 who presented the mural for the west wall of the music room, the students of Bullard have held in highest esteem their school and its traditions. Each class has contributed its share of traditions and has pre- served faithfully those of its predecessors whenever possible. Reading these chronicles of the student body of Bullard l963 we see Traditions Qld and N ew

Dedication John Ryska Robin Rush In reviewing Bullard's traditions old and new, the Lance staff finds that there are two out- standing representatives of their fine faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the traditions of Bullard. One, who represents the academic side of school life, began as a teacher at Bullard Ele- mentary School and helped in the establishing of the present Bullard High School in 1955, frequently working into early morning hours in order to help launch the new school. Those first years he coached basketball, taught math and physics, and helped organize many student activities that grew into traditions. No student affair was complete without his presence. Today Mr. john Ryska is still noted for his unflagging interest in all student affairsg and al- though his main task now is to give tests, to hunt for scholarships, and to see that seniors graduate, any student who visits his office receives his undivided attention and comes away a little richer in spirit. The second, representing the athletic side of school life, is a young coach who came to Bullard in 1958 when it became part of the Fresno City Unified School District. Coaching football and wrestling, Mr. Robin Rush enjoys a wide reputation for stressing traditions of sportsmanship and fair play and for being a gentleman. While striving for excellence, at all times he teaches boys first. This has earned him the respect and loyalty of his players and admiration from all who come in contact with him. Bullard's rooting section cheers proudly when this tall distinguished figure strides across the turf. Such outstanding teachers as these two have helped Bullard to achieve the high rating which has become traditional. Therefore, to john Ryska and Robin Rush we proudly dedicate the 1963 Lance. 7
