Traditionally an academic minded high school with emphasis on individual achievement in all forms of competition, the Knights are now recognized contenders in all team endeavors, as well. From the first provisional student government which met in the summer of 1955 to select the theme Knights and the colors Columbia and Navy blue to the Class of l962 who presented the mural for the west wall of the music room, the students of Bullard have held in highest esteem their school and its traditions. Each class has contributed its share of traditions and has pre- served faithfully those of its predecessors whenever possible. Reading these chronicles of the student body of Bullard l963 we see Traditions Qld and N ew J-3 FRESNO CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION LEWIS S. EATON, Clerk of the Boardg MRS. MARGARET R. LAWRENCE E. TODD- HUNTER, Assistant Super intendent, Elementary ' A Education J. C, TROMBETTA, Assist- ant Superintendent, Business Services . V. Dedication John Ryska Robin Rush In reviewing Bullard's traditions old and new, the Lance staff finds that there are two out- standing representatives of their fine faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the traditions of Bullard. One, who represents the academic side of school life, began as a teacher at Bullard Ele- mentary School and helped in the establishing of the present Bullard High School in 1955, frequently working into early morning hours in order to help launch the new school. Those first years he coached basketball, taught math and physics, and helped organize many student activities that grew into traditions. No student affair was complete without his presence. Today Mr. john Ryska is still noted for his unflagging interest in all student affairsg and al- though his main task now is to give tests, to hunt for scholarships, and to see that seniors graduate, any student who visits his office receives his undivided attention and comes away a little richer in spirit. The second, representing the athletic side of school life, is a young coach who came to Bullard in 1958 when it became part of the Fresno City Unified School District. Coaching football and wrestling, Mr. Robin Rush enjoys a wide reputation for stressing traditions of sportsmanship and fair play and for being a gentleman. While striving for excellence, at all times he teaches boys first. This has earned him the respect and loyalty of his players and admiration from all who come in contact with him. Bullard's rooting section cheers proudly when this tall distinguished figure strides across the turf. Such outstanding teachers as these two have helped Bullard to achieve the high rating which has become traditional. Therefore, to john Ryska and Robin Rush we proudly dedicate the 1963 Lance. 7 we 2 Q W f My-W mm My wma mmwmwwdbwmwxw Q - Faculty Traditionally the faculty and staff of Bullard High have been noted for the vigor and enthusiasm with which they share their wisdom and for the gracious and generous support of student body activities. Seniors Entering Bullard as freshmen, the CLASS OF 1963 held the first off-campus prom in its junior year, and this year, exemplifying the spirit of this class, introduced the SPIRIT JUG, a tradition that is bound to last. Tom Badge r, P . reside nt Warren Houston, Vice President Jill Utter, Secretary Mike Lucas, r Treasurer Cheryl Jordan, Fa Social commissions Following tradition, the Seniors sponsored two car washes, a cake sale, the Senior Formal, and a booth in the Key Club Carnival. Orientation day for new students, which is held before school starts in September, was handled, as usual, by the Seniors. A new tradition started this year was the selling of Bullard bracelets, link style with blue enameled shields and letters spelling the school name. The class sponsors were Mr. Paul Andersen and Miss Kathrine Stone. Fall Student Government ln an attempt to welcome new students in the Fig Garden area, the Executive Council of the 1962 Fall Student Govern- ment initiated a summer courtesy committee which functioned during the latter part of the summer. New friendships were made and old friendships renewed at the Hi-Knight Dance, the first social event of the year. A victorious team in the Football Carnival increased in- terest in the fall sport, resulting in the winning of the Sports- manship Bell, Card tricks were expanded to include six colors instead of the traditional two. Capping the season was the Homecoming festivities, featuring the queen on her royal float, at the victorious Bullard-McLane game. As a result of the game Bullard tied with Roosevelt for the Championship. The first exchange rally with Bullard's Friendly Rival Edison culminated with the presenting of a knight and tiger trophy to be held by the school which defeats the rival. The trophy will be awarded for each sport. During the fall semester the executive officers drafted amendments to clarify the constitution, appropriated funds for a new trophy case, established better control over school ad- vertising, and made suggestions for the landscape project to be carried out by the spring student government. Committees were to be selected by the president to plan the landscape project through which it was hoped to complete the beautifying of the Bullard campus . The Spring Government continued the sale of student body directories which were compiled by the fall group.
