w CONTENTS FACULTY SENIORS i SCHOOL LIFE 1 ACTIVITIES ■ ATHLETICS |B CLUBS We, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and eighty six dedicate our yearbook to the 350 th anniversary of Hartford a city full of culture and rich in history. Its diversity has given us strength to achieve out goals and confidence to strive toward them. Our class is proud to be part of Hartford. Dear Class of 1986, The end of the school year. The end of your senior year, and so, the end of 12 years of school. It s been a long time coming, this graduation. Probably you have few clear memories of anything that happened in the years before you started. Whether you wanted to or not you organized your life around school. It was, after your family, one of the central facts of your life. It became a habit. In fact, school helped to shape your personality and character, your habits and your way of doing things. Nothing you do from now on will be quite the same as attending school. You had very little choice about school, but you will have choice in what you do next. Some have already made the decision, some will get jobs. And you will think from time to time that it s very much the same. You will get up early in the morning, and you will have commitments, things you have to do all day. But it will be different because you will have chosen to do whatever it is you are doing. You will have made a selection from several possibilities. You will be responsible for the big thing you are doing as well as all the little things. It is this which makes graduation a Commencement. Congratulations. Ralph T. Conlon, Jr, Principal __ r Every Step of the Way ”71 L. The team will be lead by Captain Kevin Soucey, a senior and a 3 year letter winner. Soucey is a two year all league All Star Team, City Medalist Champ, qualified for the State Tournament and has an excellent chance of winning All State Honors. Junior Josh Smith, All City 3 years and 2 year letter winner will play a large role in this years team success. Senior Richard Jenson 2 year return¬ ing letterman will be called to pull a few surprises like he did last year to contribute to the teams point totals all city one year. Promising Junior Chris Mooney will be expected to con¬ tinue to improve his steady performance of last year. He could be the key to a tremendous year. Two Freshmen who will give the others a real battle for the starting spots will be Robie Davis and Sandy Czunas, the first girl ever to try put for the Bulldog team. She is the sister of Bulkeley ' s golfing great Nicky Czunas of two years ago. Coach Suitor expects great things of Freshman Robie Davis. He has all the tools to be another Bulkeley great in the links. Coach Suitor, in his 19 years as a coach, is closing in on 250 victories. Senior Captain Kevin Soucey, 102 Back Row: Monica Bowman, Wanda Simmons, Cappy McDowell, Tina Eligio, Coach Phillip, Front Row: Nermala Ramdahar, Jackie LaBoy, Gloria Cruz, Loida Reyes, Nelida Vasquez. The Bulkeley Girls’ Tennis Team is optimistic about the ’86 tennis season. Coach A1 Phillips believes that even though the ’85 team had a record of 3-11 the girls still managed to win its 10 th straight City Series Champion¬ ship. Another reason for optimism is that the top three players of the ’85 season are returning. The key returning players include Senior Tina Eligio who had the best record last year with 9 wins and 5 losses. Junior Jackee Laboy who had an 8-6 record playing in the tough number one position. Junior Cappy McDowell, who was 8-6 last year, should contribute with some good tennis to give the Bulkeley girls a solid 1-2-3 punch in 1986. With these things in mind, the ’86 tennis team should win more matches and also capture its 11th straight City Series Championship. Coach Phillips with top returning players; Jackie Laboy, Cappy McDowell and Tina Eligio. 103 TENNIS Top Row: Miguel Miranda, Manish Tanejah, Luigi Frasca, Luis Lopez, John Watson, Jose Negron, Eddie Valentin, Anibal Colon, James Jeong, Coach Joe DiChara. Bottom Row: Jimmy Flores, Joel Sanchez, Isidro Rosado, Chad Dever. Team Record 6 wins 9 losses City Series Champs 4-0 Seniors, graduated — John Watson (4- 9), Jose Negron (0-2). The Boys 1 Tennis team was very com¬ petitive and was only one player short from winning in the strong CCC Southern Division. Seniors, Eric Valentin (8-4) and Luis Lopez (9-6), led a group of promising young players, which should make the 1986 team very c ompetitive. Coach DiChara 1. A determined Jimmy Flores anticipates his oppo¬ nent’s returned shot. 2. Eddie Valentin returns a “smash.” 3. Luis Lopez concentrates as he plans to deliver an overhead smash. 4. As the ball is returned, James Jeong goes for a hit. Bottom Row: John Niles, Israel Resto, James Toland, Manuel Falcon, Ramiro Nobre, Luis Fiqueroa, Allen Piementa, Matt Pacocha, Coach Yertefeuille. Last year’s outdoor track team was a hard work¬ ing young team that showed much promise. This year the team will be led by Captain John Niles and will have the following members of the team Captain John Niles and Coach Mr. Vertefeville. returning: Jonathan Greenfield, James Niles, Howard Tyson, Shawn Pressey and many more. Coach Vertefuille says that he anticipates an ex¬ citing season and that if the field events improve they will be a competitive team in the new league. 107 Front Row: Matt Palocha, Tomas Claudio, Sarah Oliver, Tawanda Jomes, Angie Lee, Latrice Johnson, Sharon Clarke, Joanne Falcon, Second Row: Coach Bellucci, Carmelo Claudio, Darnell Kizer, William Rivera, James Toland, Eric Allen, John Niles, Migdalia, Coach Martin, Back Row: Sal Kyle, James Niles, Carlos Ruiz, Damon Esposito, Robert Davis, Leonard Lollar, Jukio Colon, Thortoti White, Returning from a disappointing ' 84-85 Indoor Track season, their first losing season since 1974, the Bulldogs of Coach Martin achieved an 8-3 dual meet record. The men finished 5th and the ladies 3rd in the CCC compos¬ ed of fourteen teams. Losing one senior Coach Martin ex¬ pects next year to be a much more competitive season. With too many up and coming athletes to mention, next year ' s team should improve immensely and eliminate mistakes that proved to be costly in State Class LL open meets. 108 09 Bottom Row: Seniors Wanda Garcia, Mary-Beth Davis, Regina Long. Top Row: Manager Michelle Thomas, Janet Lopez, Kattya Lopez, Barbara Lynch, Tracy Green, Lucy Marchigano, Marilyn Rosa, Coach Mrs. Duval. Last year’s ' 85 team finished with a 6-12 record. The season was a constant battle for victory. One of the most outstanding victories came against Bristol Eastern. The Lady Bulldogs managed to sustain a last inning surge by B.E. and chalk up one for a victory. The score was 4-3 and the winning pitcher was Mary-Beth Davis. The ’85 team graduated 5 starting seniors and saw the retirement of Mrs. Billie Duval who has been the coach of the Girls’ Softball team for ten years. With the help of returning seniors Mary-Beth Davis, Wanda Garcia, and Regina Long, the Bulldogs look forward to an outstanding season. 110 BASEBALL The 1985 Bulkeley Baseball Team entered its first season in the tough CCC Southern Conference with six victories. The team added its long stretch of consecutive City Titles by winning its fifteenth straight. Led by seniors Jimmy Cyr, Co-Captain Angel Diaz, Co-Capt. Ariel Rosario and Javier Rosario the team was a threat every game. Willie Gonzales led the team in batting with a shocking .403 average with seventeen runs batted in. Sophomore Jose Perez was second with .341 followed by Ariel Rosario at .340. Frank Villafane was outstanding at third base defensively and did a same story pitching in the mound. Ariel Rosario was the teams number one pitcher getting credit for most of the league victories. Although the team will be without those seniors there will be seven seniors returning that will form the nucleus of a good squad for the 1986 season. Top Row: Lori Graci, Benjamin Jurado, Cecilia Falcon, Coach Pete Kokinis, Second Row: Antonio Santiago,’ Jose Perez, William Gonzales, Mike Snyder, Frank Villifane, Third Row: Jimmy Cyr, Ariel Rosario, Javier Rosario, Angel Diaz. 112 ' % UW GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY Bottom Row: Gloria Pagan, Joanne Falcon, Captain Sharon Clarke, Penny Howard. Bottom Row: Alex Cruz, Manual Falcon, Ramiro Nobre, Capt. John Niles, Capt. Chris Williams, Mgr. Co-Captains John Niles and Chris Williams along with a fine 9th grade run¬ ner Tomas Claudio who made all con¬ ference team in the Southern division will be returning along with other promising athletes. 116 Seniors: Kevin Soucy, Jacque Watson, Lagwana McMullen, Katrina Foster, Aretha Minion, Anibal Colon. VOLLEYBALL Top Row: Coach Rich Hornkohl, Mgr. Anibal Colon, Bonnie Ursery, Migdalia Cruz, Milagros Rosa, Sandy Reyes, Teresa Simmons, Jacque Watson, Lourdes Fernandez, Charmin Kendall, Mgr. Kevin Soucy, Asst. Coach Mike Brescia. Bottom Row: Gloria Vasquez, Gloria Cruz, Katrina Foster, Aretha Minion, Lagwana McMullen, Mary Ann Medina, Carmen Velasquez. 118 BOYS’ GYMNASTICS The Boys’ Gymnastics Team this past season should be characterized as a young team with a core of returning let- termen from last season. The lack of overall depth and ex¬ perience led to a mediocre season. The younger members of this year’s team, showed steady improvement throughout the year. We expect that next season the team will form a strong nucleus with which to build an ex¬ cellent team of committed gymnasts. Much credit should be given to the following students who finished the season and did an excellent job for Bulkeley: Jerry Rosa, 6 in the state in Pommel Horse, Javiel Resto, city champ in Parallel Bars, Luis Ayala and Saul Ayala along with ever- improving Juan Correa who excelled in the vault. GIRLS’ SOCCER Top Row: Coach Carlo Magno, Dawn Amore, Lissette Laboy, Capucine McDowell, Eritzaida Rodriguez, Damika Esposito, Tracy Green, Kattya Lopez, Asst. Coach Lynda Glover. Middle Row: Emma Ortiz, Carmen Echevarria, Marjorie Pimienta, Wanda Rodriguez, Carol Falcon, Iffet Araniti, Iris Estronza, Liz Noli. Bottom Row: Maritza Otera, Rosa Falcon, Mary-Beth Davis, Rosanna Quinones, Tammy Sanchez, Jackie Laboy. The Girls’ Soccer Team, although composed of young members displayed much effort throughout the season, Its teamwork has been without compare. They refused to allow injuries and challenging op- posers to impair their strategy. They managed to hold down major opponents like Newington and Southington. With the help of senior Mary-Beth Davis, juniors Kattya Lopez, Jackie Laboy and sophomore Tracy Green, they obtained victories against Bristol Central and Maloney. As the season progressed the team’s performance improved dramatically. The confidence with which the girls played was unbelievable. The unity, dedication, and determination of the team helped their way to a successful season. BOYS’ SOCCER Bottom Row: David Syrene, Ralph Fierro, Guy La Chance, Chris Mooney, Dino Signorello, Peter Ganci, Angel Cotto, Cecil Espejo. Top Row: Coach Frank Budaj, Wayne Casey, Lucio DiLoreto, Mario Mezzio, Joe Gennuso, Juan Rivera, Tony Goncalves, Frank Capasso, Steve Mihelis, Joe DiBlasi, Dominick Cristofaro. This year’s soccer team was very competitive. With the help of Seniors Gerardo Bello, Joseph DiBlasi, Peter Ganci, Antonio Goncalves, Mario Mezzio and Dino Signorello, the Bulldogs were a challenge to many of their competitors. Although they did not have a winning season, they never gave up. Their hard work and determination finally became apparent in their victory against New Britain. Coach Frank Budaj and Captain Frank Capasso 1. Dino Signorello manuevers the ball toward a victory for Bulkeley. 2. Peter Ganci looks for a passage as a defender from Bristol Central attacks. 3. Concentration is the key as David Bello protects the ball. 4. Frank Capasso does the “Can-Can while a player from Bristol Central defends the ball. Bottom Row: Manager Kelly-Ann Brennan, Lori Bouley, Monica Lindo, Regina Long, Wendy Williams, Laurel Pierce, Helene Martel. Middle Row: Effie Sakis, Coach Diane Callis, Serena Resto, Coralee Torres, Wanda Simmons, Linda Caruk, Lynn Rugan, Diondrea Holloman, Manager Hector Torres. Top Row: Karen Kilimas, Maribel Torres, Monica Moquin, Marisol Torres, Nilsa Rosa, Manager Edwin Brown, Manager Edgar Burgos, Manager Jarles Florez, Manager Edwin Ruiz, Manager John Jiminez. The 1985 Girls’ Swim Team finished their season with a 3-11 record, but the team’s record is by no means indicative of their in¬ dividual efforts and achievements. Coach Diane Callis saw her swimmers and divers gain experience and demonstrate enough strength to win their last two dual meets and qualify five swimmers to the Class L State Swim Meet. The strong medley relay team made up of seniors Regina Long, Laurel Pierce, and Wen¬ dy Williams, and junior Linda Caruk con¬ sistently took top honors all season. Their time of 2:05.15 broke the school record and placed 9th in the state meet. Co-captain Wendy Williams also placed 9th in that meet posting a 57.86 in the 100 yd. freestyle shattering her old team record. The success of the individual swimmers and divers proved to be an indication of the girls’ talents at BHS and hopefully an inspiration for the future success of girl’s swimming. Coach Diane Callis, Co-captains Wendy Williams and Regina Long. FOOTBALL Top Row: Coach Harry Bellucci, Reggie Allen, Raphael Solla, James Tolland, Larry Nails, Miguel Lopez, Rich Gilbert, Basillio Ortiz, Rodry Faver, Robert Davis, Sean Pressey, James Niles, Paulo Reyes, Coach Graham Martin. Bottom Row: Eric Flores, Dejemal Araniti, Frank Villafane, Craig Dixon, Mike Snyder, Teddy Mathis, George Pegeas, Leonard McKenzie, Marc Caouette, Jason Farrell, Ken Jordan. Bulkeley High School ' s football team was still relatively young, but fought with determination all season. “Tying two games and winning none certainly was not an indication of the potential that these young men possessed,’’ commented Coach Graham Martin. Although not compiling an im¬ pressive record, the team fought hard to keep themselves motivated. Led by Captains George Pegeas, Mike Snyder, and Teddy Mathis, the Bulldog machine continued running. Tri-Captains: Mike Snyder, Teddy Mathis, George Pegeas, with Coach Martin. “Flutie on the run” George Pegeas anticipates the count Craig breaking through Offense ’86 BOYS’ SWIMMING L-R Bottom-Top: Hector Torres, Edwin Ruiz, Robert Bouthet, Jarles Florez, John Jimenez, Sean Lord, David Caruk, 2nd Row: Dominick Cristofaro, Richard Collins, Edwin Brown, Nino Giammarco, Michael Williams, Brett Swanson, 3rd Row: Everett Hillman, Jimmy Ganzalez, Leon Pierce, John Saunders, Larry Velez, Edward McDowell, Mary-Beth Davis, 4th Row: Dana Will lams, Robert Davis, Jose Espejo, Juan Ganzalez, Nugyen Vii, Jason Shira, Edwin Cruz, Roger Caruk, Maribel Torres, Marisol Torres, Back Row: Coach James Brophy, Alfredo Cardona, Pedro Rosa, Cecil Espejo, Michael Ball, Wendy Williams. The 1985-86 Boys’ Swim Team had a season typical of the successful teams of the past. The team completed its 11th straight winning season and was 1st in its league with a record of 5 and 0. Led by captains John Jimenez, Edwin Ruiz, and Hector Torres, and Seniors Robert Bouthet, David Caruk, and Sean Lord, the team broke 2 school records and qualified for 21 places in the State Championship. A large group of underclassmen, who came to the pro¬ gram with little experience, have worked long and hard, and will surely carry on the winning Bulkeley tradition. 130 131 GYMNASTICS Back Row: Rosamma Quinomes, Diondrea Holloman, Donna Pinard, Erica Rodri¬ quez, Coach Reilly, Front Row: Cpts. Lori Bouley, Linda Caruk, Gina Giachello. This year’s team is led by a nucleus of 5 girls; Linda Caruk, Lori Bouley, Gina Giachello, Diondrea Holloman and Rosamma Quinomes along with a supporting cast give the team some added depth. The team will be losing 3 out-going Seniors; Lori Bouley, Gina Giachello and Donna Pinard. This will leave a base for next year’s team but some additions will be needed to make a strong team. We are looking forward to an experienced team next year after struggling a bit this year. Coach Reilley with Captains Lori Bouley, Gina Giachello, Linda Caruk. BOYS’ WRESTLIN Front Row: Coach Roger VertefeuiUe, James Veseskis, Isarael Resto, Reyes Guzman, Heriberto Resto, Jose Narvaez, Luis Quiros, William Mooney, Asst. Coach Rome, Middle Row: Javier Resto, Anthony Tedeschi, Antonio Rodrigues, Greg Beebe, Alex Rios, I id ward Santiago, Juan Rivera, I.uis Ayala, Back Row: Robert Lee, Curtis Lollar, Cormac Foster, Antonio Valentin, David Colon, Edwin Negron, Saul Ayala, Wesley Jackson. This year’s team consisted mainly of young and inex¬ perienced freshmen and sophomores. However, led by retur¬ ning Senior Captain Anthony Tedeschi and Juniors Wesley Jackson, Israel Resto, and Co-Captain Curtis Lollar, the team ended the season with a 7-10 record. Behind the strength of Wesley Jackson, James Veseskis, and Curtis Lollar, the team faced strong competition and emerged victorious. Two highlights of the season were winning the City Champion¬ ship and scoring a stunning 55-11 victory over Wethersfield. The team qualified for the states and should place well. Jackson, Veseskis, and Lollar should place 1st or 2nd in their weight classes. Anthony Tedeschi and Javier Resto should also do well. 134 Co-Captains Anthony Tedeschi and Curtis Lollar $ ilBLSf i GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach Phillips, Jacque Watson, Regina Long, Coach Haliums. The team accomplished many things during the season. The achievements included Bulkeley’s first city-series cham¬ pionship since 1975 qualifying for the state tournament, win¬ ning the most games in a season, and setting a record for scoring average per game. The ’85-86 team was a veteran team made up of eight seniors and a junior. The following players made im¬ portant contributions to the success of this year’s team: Regina Long, an excellent defensive player and finished her career as Bulkeley’s all-time career scoring leader. Jacque Watson sup¬ plied the team with scoring and rebounding as a power forward. Tina Eligio provided depth as being the team’s leading free- throw shooter. Lagwana McMullen showed alot of hustle as an offensive rebounder and surpassed the old record. Aretha Mi¬ nion in the center position used her speed and quickness to add strength to the defense. Katrina Foster supplied the team with hustle and intense defense. Faye Anderson was a “spark plug’’ of hustle and enthusiasm adding excitement to this year’s team. Jackie Hall contributed with long range shooting. Junior Kattya Lopez was the teams top scorer and set a single game scoring record of 28 points. To this date in Bulkeley’s history this was the best girls’ basketball team. 136 137 BOYS’ BASKETBALL Front Row: Robert Manson, Darcy Miller, John Owens, Stacey Lawson, Greg Merritt, Back Row: Coach Lyons, Kevin Wilson, Dwight Gordon, Mike Hodges, Ralph Hawes, Jonathon Greenfield, Rafael Otero, Coach DiChiari. The team’s ac¬ complishments included qualifying for the State Tourna¬ ment with a 14-6 record, winning the CCC southern division championship for the second straight year with an 11-3 record, and dividing the City Series games with a 2-2 record.
