Sfstlll life n Bp f HI 1 We, the class of 1976, in honor of the school’s 50th anniversary, are very proud to dedicate our yearbook to the late governor Morgan Gardner Bulkeley, after whom Bulkeley High School was named. The late Mr. Bulkeley was born in East Haddam on December 26,1837. At the age of 9, he and his family moved to Hartford, where he started working in his father’s insurance company, now known as Aetna Life Insurance Company. Even¬ tually, he became the third president Of Aetna, after his father’s death. He was elected as a councilman and later mayor. In 1888, he was elected gover¬ nor of the state of Connecticut. In 1904, he climaxed his career by being elected to the United States Senate. Not only was this unusual man a great social and economic success, but he was also a lover of sports. He organized many baseball teams. And in recognitio n of this, Bulkeley was named President of the National League at its organization in 1870. Thus this eminent man — outstanding in business, politics, and sports — lived a truly full life. We should all be proud to be part of the magnificent school which has been dedicated to this great man — Morgan Gardner Bulkeley. have influenced our growth and maturity; not only have they taught us in academics but in organizations and many areas of life also. The faculty has guided and aided us — we should remember them with gratitude and a smile. As we sojourn through this significant period of our lives — these four years at BHS — we must stop and contemplate important influences on our development. Outstanding among these factors is the faculty — whether it be administrators or teachers. These people 19 ' •’ ■ : iitifi- F lward J. Kusck Vicc-Principal Frank P. Scclza Vicc-Principal Joseph O. All of those participating in activities i learn the value of cooperation. Only benefits result from active participation in a club; one becomes more knowledgeable in his areas of interest, introduced to new concepts and this broadens his perception — of those surrounding him, of his society and of himself. Meeting people, working and interacting with them, is a priceless learning experience. Belonging to a club also carries responsibilities; one must fulfill these duties hence exhibiting accomplishment and matu¬ rity. Success justified every moment of hard, never-ending work and planning on some activity. Although these groups are unified and orderly, they allow each person to express his individuality and display his various tal¬ ents. Let us never stop working toward a goal. We must always strive to achieve dreams and contemplate opportunities as we have in the past. ORGANIZA TIONS Cindy Amadeo BUSINESS BOARD I have more memories than if I were a thousand years old CO-EDITORS Gail Gaffey The yearbook staff should be highly commended for creating a lasting and fond memory — our yearbook. These people have diligently toiled for hours, assembling and collecting bits and pieces of all in the class of 1976 to be placed in this book. Our four years at Bulkeley will always be cherished through this book and those who worked on it shall always be remembered. —• Charles Baudelaire newspaper s news and raise hell, The Chicago Times (1861) TOP TO BOTTOM: L to R. Senior Class Our Senior Class Officers have worked extremely hard to sponsor dances, raise money and plan the Senior Recep¬ tion. This group has encountered many difficulties along its path to success; naming a few, the teachers job- action,” apathy and school regulations. Determination and ambition have helped them along this rocky road. Remem¬ ber them as great leaders and organizers who have always represented you. L to R. The primary difficulty they must overcome is the fear which they encounter as novices. This is their first attempt at leading a class; pizza, flower, and card sales have proven profit¬ able and have demonstrated the powerful qualities these people possess. Thirty-two Club This club consists of the top sixteen boys and sixteen girls of the senior class. These people are well edu¬ cated and have spent a great deal of time and hard work for their studies. National Honor Society The National Honor Society is composed of upperclassmen who excel not only in academics, but in leadership and charac¬ ter as well. Hard work for all four years has given them this honor. 94 The role of government and its relation¬ ship to the individuals has been changed so radically that today government is involved in almost every aspect of our lives. Next year, hope¬ fully, a production will be fully car¬ ried out. Bolkcloj CDirta’ Botto CK onor-Service-zfpuali The medical professions are noble and the students in this club are fortu¬ nate to be exposed to various insights concerning their career choice. This orientation should prove beneficial in the years to come. I 103 ■ Science-Life Club These selected students have gone on science-oriented field trips and sponsored a Kinesiology (body-building) assembly. Through these valuable experiences, these students may decide if their career choice is in the sciences. Peer Counseling The Peer Counseling Group was organized at Bulkeley to get stu¬ dents to help other students. These peer counselors completed a course which trained them in the art of listening to others and pro¬ viding resources where these are needed. The peer counselors work with staff coordinators, teachers, who act as resource persons. The staff went through the training with the students and were formed into units where they help each other as well. Peer counselors see students who want to discuss problems regarding academics or per¬ sonal concerns. 105 Mat Maids This group of girls are faithful supporters of the wres¬ tling team. You can find them at every meet cheering for their team. Sometimes they sponsor bake sales which con¬ tribute money to the team for needed items. As upperclass¬ men we were granted privileges and unified the class in order to maintain success in all activities. In our junior year, pizza sales, flower sales, a roller skating party and social security plate sales contributed to the funds needed for our junior prom — Shunshine of My Life.” For the first time in years, Talent Nite was held; students involved displayed tremendous unity and talent. This school year, 1975-1976, activities have been hindered or delayed because of Board- Teacher disputes. However, such fund-raisers as candy sales, a raffle, and dances will greatly aid the Senior Reception, Memories,” in Txrcoming a success and joyful memory! 119 Get High on Your Mind and Body 122 Veali. I’m a senior, so what about ir? So there ' s only two weeks left of school, and then I’m out in the ' big world. Can’t wait until graduation night . it’s gonna lie great I’ll cruise up front, grab that diploma, say, thanks buddy, and run. S’pose I don’t know where I’m running to, though Before, all I did was follow the rest of those darn rowdies. I knew I could always find someone at a game, a party, or MacDonald’s But now it’s gonna he different: We’re all going to take off and try to make it on our own. I isten to this joke — letting graduation get to him after twelve years of being ' a hard guy. Oh, geez . . . Yea, it’s tilde to make it to class . . guess l might even miss that when it’s over. I’ve always had the security of the school routine and its activities, surrounded by the friends I was so familiar with. Now we’ll all be going in different directions, and I wonder (tow long it will be before the memories that meant so much start to fade. After twelve years of this you would think 1 would he ready to move on, but I feel like I’m leaving a part of me behind. Maybe that’s good though, because I really have changed in the four years that I’ve been here. Well, pretty soon they’ll get to my name. Then I’ll be up there, and it’ll be all over. The Soccer Team was the Class L State Champion; the Basketball Team, for the first time in years, made the play-downs; the Volleyball Team placed tenth in the State. The Swimming, Wrestling and Track Teams fared unusually well; Bulkeley had several individual honors in State Tournaments and success in most City Series Championships. School spirit was tremendous this year and even heartbreaking defeats could not overpower our spirit. Although victory was not always ours, the time and effort spent by athletes and coaches were surely justified by self-esteem and gained respect. FIRST ROW: L to R. This is truly an honor for the Soc¬ cer Team and everyone should be proud of them, for it is the first time in the history of Bulkeley High School that any team sport has won a state championship. There were six members of the team who made the CDC all star team. They are: Robert Cicero, Giuseppe Capasso, Ricky Motta, Mike Motta, Benji Niro and John Nisyrios. Also, Aldo Pantano received hon¬ orable mention. The team scored 65 goals, gave up 7 and had 11 shutouts in all for their winning season, making their record 14-3-0.
