' ■ 111 m if 33 language courses gain popularity among students the language department this year . . . had to hire three additional teachers . . . to meet the ever-growing demand of these students . . . who wish to take italian . . . french . . . german ... or latin . . . mais pourquoi . . . why have all these students taken such an interest in language . . . perhaps it ' s the use of new techniques and materials . . . such as . . . filmstrips and slides ... or the many trips the classes take to view a play ... or to hear a speaker . . . at the end of the course . . . the students may ... all these make up bulkeley ' s first supply mart . . . the distributive education store . . . efficiently run ... by eager business students . . . distributive education is only one phase ... of the business department ' s multi-faceted training program . . . others include office practice . . . bookkeeping . . . secretarial training . . . and shorthand charles hart louise druffner june for their present employment ... as well as for future occupa¬ tions . . . these students put their knowledge to use . . . and gain satisfaction ... by making furniture in the general woods department . . . planning for a future home in the drafting department . . . printing material in the graphic arts department ... or going creative in the general metals department . . . the classes offer tangible training and education to their students . . . and meet their practical needs . . . the students 7 enthusiasm and pride in these classes ... is reflected in their newspaper . . . which keeps the faculty and student body informed of the happenings in Ja ... the drafting and general woods departments are co-ed . . . and although many girls have taken advantage of this . . . the odds are still in their favor II limited space . no hindrance in the far end of the third floor . . . inconspicuously tucked away . . . between the Italian class and typing room ... is found a room . . . the walls are covered with sketches . . . drawings ... oil paintings . . . the counters are overloaded with busts . . . statues . . . the desks are filled by wide eyed students . young picassos . . . rodens ... da vincis . . each bit of artisti c clutter . . . represents a part of the course . . . basics are taught in the first year . . . then comes painting and art figures . . . and finally . . . delicious . . . just like home aromas . . . escape from the home economics room ... martha w ere anderson girls enter knowing how to make toast . . . and leave masters of cheese souffles and chocolate mousse . . in between they learn . . . sewing . . . child care . . . and interior decorating. - • with girls becoming culinary experts a new future is revealed for the boys • • • margaret a chefs club is being planned . . . for heppner all those boys who rush home to practice cooking . . . eventually family education courses will also be offered . . . seems ar off . . . maybe . . . but whoever sprained ankles in basketball . . . pulled ligaments in cheerleading . . twisted fingers in gym . . . such accidents require first aid . . . administered by our school nurse . . . mrs kycia . . . and our school physician . . . doctor uricchio mrs kycia . . . new to bulkeley this year . . . oversees the health of every student . . . works with the doctor . .. during physical examinations . . . and any emergency that may occur . . . at . . . another sports injury 43 . . . however . . . the better space distribution allows for more gymnastics with a varied array of apparatus . . . and more after school recreation for the sports minded individual never before in bulkeley ' s history . . . have boy and girl gym classes been held simultaneously . . . making for smaller classes ... a chance to be more personal . . . and the opportunity to accomplish more . . . unfortun¬ ately a curtain is being used to separate boys and girls elizabeth boudreau new dietician introduces tasty culinary treats after dedicated long term service . . . miss whitelaw retired as head of the cafeteria staff . . . leaving the important position of chief dietician open . . . beginning her first year at bulkeley . . . mrs mulhern was placed in charge of bookkeeping . . . menu planning . . . and general management of the staff . . . under her supervision . . . new feats in cooking were achieved . . . for the first time in bulkeley history . . . foods such as glorified rice pudding . . . luscious swiss steak . . . and juicy . . . thick cheese¬ burgers . . . have been served to the students and faculty you may have seen one standing over you in detention hall ... or checking your attendance during a study period . . . or even eating an ice cream while proctoring the cafeteria . . . they even type up some of your tests . . . and correct many of your papers . . . who are they . . . they ' re paraprofessionals . . . specially trained teachers ' aids . . . new this year . . . who under mr ivanowsky ' s guidance . . . have taken on some of the more time consuming jobs around bulkeley . . . thus leaving our teachers with more time ... to devote to more important classroom matters a school day without custodians . . . unthinkable imagine the condition of the school if the custodians ceased their endless duties . . . stairways would be covered with mounds of dirt . . . causing passing time to be extended five minutes ... to allow the students to wade through the debris . . . echoing through the halls . . . from behind closed doors . . . would come the panicked cries . . . no bathroom tissue . . . the auditorium would be buried with pennies . . . forcing the students to throw them somewhere else . . . no need to panic . . . the custodians are here . . . there . . . everywhere ... all the discontent and dedication looped around their necks . . . bulkeley ' s first picketers . . . sympathetic students supplying coffee . .. inside . . . students line the doorways . . . waiting in steamy warmth ... the seconds tick . . . the minutes pass . . . and the hands turn . .. turn until the bell sounds nd the corridors flood on signal es have been read . . . call slips passed out . . . attendance taken . . . and the students are organizing for the resource period . . . talk quietly . . . others do last minute studying ... or honor their call . . many gather in the auditorium for the hum anities film ... or meet informally in the kienle room . .. all is busy for an hour . . . then students gradually return to their home rooms . . . where they sit poised . . . ready to leap at the sound of the bell . . . and make their way through the halls ... to their first period class attention lags ... a student naps in study hall . . . another stares out the window . . . daydreaming . . . others stir in rest¬ less anticipation . . . the rhythmic thump of a basketball is broken by girlish shouts of excitement ... as they try for baskets . . . hungry students swoop down on the cafeteria . . . invade the lunch lines . . . and crowd the tables . . . some eagerly devour their food . . . hoping to pass time in the rear yard ... if the weather is good . . . others eat leisurely . . . more intent on good conversation than satisfying food . . . jcc posters line the halls as students pass . . . collect afternoon books at their lockers ... or sign out on work study . . . others leave after 5th period ... a happy relief from sixth period study the majority of students . . . however must wait for the 2:06 dismissal bell . . after which they frantically grab coats and books from lockers . . . and surge out into the fresh air some students remain in the building . . . detention hall fills ... a hush presides ... in contrast the gym is filled with laughter and noise ... a basketball scrimmage is being held . . . . i I 1 . ... 1 lilSI . ■. ... ilMli the students who leave . . . pass the flag pole and head for home ... or board buses which will take them to jobs downtown . . . here they work for a few more hours . . . often harder than they did in school . . . finally they escape into the briskness of the night . . . travel home . . . where supper . . . homework ... a hot shower year . . .for the first time ... the torch published a September issue ... for the first time ... the paper and size were changed . . . and various features such as . . . public opinion polls . . . were added ive the torch a new look ... to match its new office bigger is better along with the usual girls league and boys club membership drives at the start of the year . . . was the drive for dial subscribers . . . this year however . . . the dial presented the most original subscription campaign ever to hit the bulkeley lobby . . . slogans and posters announcing the new . . . larger size of the dial . . . hung in every corner . . . and letters strung across the lobby . . . the campaign . . . foreshadowed the accomplishments of the literary magazine . . . the larger size and greater amount of pages . . . offer students more room for their literary works ... as well as their artistic masterpieces . . . student influence is so strong this year . . . that even the printing is handled by students martha pryshlak . . . ann treglia . . . debby bartman . . . maria skevas . . . barbara anderson . . . melanie jones . . . james mahoney seated . . . debbie forte . . . cecilia molleur . . . alice blazins . . . mariette pizzoni . . . standing . . . frances delucco . . . mary rudewicz . . . terry seals . . .
