The major problem that the team faced was its lack of depth. There were however, many compensations to offset this problem. This years team was an expe- rienced one due to the fact that many of last years swimmers were returning. The medley relay team of Shortell, Vissoe, Peatie, and Wilson started the meet off by de- feating their Bristol Eastern counterparts. Raf- falo., Vissoe, Shortell, and Peatie captured firsts in leading the team to victory. An all-too-powerful Sacred Heart swimming team sank the Bulkeley team hy the score of 4-7-29. Outstanding in defeat were Baffalo, Shor- tell, Peatie, and the freestyle relay team of Langhans, Griffith, Karwan and Wilson, all cap- turing first places, with Dave Lynch adding a second. The Bulkeley team nailed Windham by the score of 17-41. Mike Boyle paced the team by finishing in first place with ,lim Bracken second, Al Puglisi third, Bob Mason fourth, Larry Ca- marca seventh, and Harvey McPhee eighth. The New Britain High cross country team handed Bulkeley a loss in a 22-35 score. New Britain, one of the perennial strong cross coun- try teams in the state, proved to be too much for the Bulkeley runners. Outstanding in defeat were Bob Mason second, Jim Bracken fifth, Mike Boyle seventh, and Al Puglisi tenth. With Bill Baron of East Hartford setting a new course record, our Bulkeley harriers placed fourth out of a field of seven schools in the an- nual Greater Hartford cross country meet at Keney Park. Bulkeley 28 L Weaver .. ., Fourth in Greater Hartford meet Eleventh in Sectional meet Seventeenth in State meet On a rainy and muddy aftemoon the cross country team suffered defeats at the hands of Hartford and Weaver. That meet saw the team fall victim to a strong Hartford High team 16-39 and nipped by Weaver 27-28. Leading the team were Mike Boyle, Paul McCollam, and Jim Bracken finishing sixth, eighth, and ninth re- spectively. The harriers ended their regular season by defeating Wethersfield 26-29. Placing second, third, and fourth were Bob Mason, Jim Bracken, and Mike Boyle, while Joe Sinicrope captured seventh and ,lim Moran eighth. After the regular season was over, the cross country team had accounted for a respectable 6 and 5 record. ln the University of Connecticut Invitational meet, the Bulkeley team placed eleventh out of sixteen teams. After this meet, the Bulkeley harriers captured seventeenth place with thirty-five teams entered in the an- nual C.l.A.C. cross country meet at Central Connecticut State College. The initial first of the meet by the medley relay team of Vignoti, Vissoe, Peatie, and Raffalo and was followed up with firsts by Langhans and Shortell. Adding valuable seconds to the team effort were Grif- fith, Shortell, Vissoe, Raffalo, Keane, Peatie, and Vignoti. Bulkeley came out on the short end of a 44-33 score in a meet' with Maloney High. Lack df depth hindered the team considerably in this meet. Outstanding in defeat were Raffalo, Peatie, and the medley relay team composed of Shortell, Vissoe, Peatie, and Karwan, all of whom secured first places. Once again the Bulkeley team lost a very close meet by the score of 40-37 to Middletown High. Bulkeley made a strong bid for victory witli Raffalo, Peatie, and the freestyle team of Keane, Langhans, Karwan and Raffalo capturing first places. Griffith, Shortell, Vissoe, Connelly, and Langhans added second places to what proved to be a losing cause. Bulkeley fell victim to Manchester Highis team, one of the most powerful in the state, by the score of 59-18. With only Shortell being able to take a first, it was evident that Manchester was too much for the Bulkeley team. Vissoe, Raffalo, and Peatie contributed second places for Bulkeley. In the next encounter, the Bulkeley swim- mers were able to turn the tide in posting a 39-38 win over Croft. Outstanding in this close meet were Raffalo and Peatie with a double win for the latter. Shortell and Peatie captured the only first places for Bulkeley, while Griffith and Lynch managed to gather in a couple of seconds. A powerful Hartford High team handed Bulkeley a 52-25 loss. Ralfalo and Connelly com- bined for a first and second in the diving event, while Shortell and Lynch did the same in the backstroke. Vissoe and Peatie captured seconds in individual events. Bulkeley swamped Platt by the score of 44-32 in the final dual meet of the season. Griffith, Shortell, Vissoe, Raffalo, Peatie, and the medley relay team of Vignati, Vissoe, Peatie, and Lang- hans showed the way by securing first places. Connelly and Lynch followed up with seconds in a fine team effort. The swimming team finished its regular sea- son with a five and eight record. Captain Bob Raffalo, an outstanding performer throughout the season, captured Bulkeley's only place in the C.I.A.C. Championships with a third place in the diving event.
