FREDERICK T. BASHOUR Principal 'NJ PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE Where are you going? We know where you have been! For the past twelve years you and the members of all the 1960 classes throughout the length and breadth of this country have participated in the great American dream of a public education for all. Although each local board of education has had its own innovations and ideas of progress, basically all of you have had a similar educational experience. It has been the common aim to afford everyone the basic skills of the 3 R's, to develop character, citizenship, a sense of moral values and, in general, to develop all those attributes which in the aggregate would represent an apperceptive mass from which each and every American student could build a good life for himself, and his family, and contribute to his country's welfare. At this point in your careers, the record changes. Each of you in your best judgment is now to make decisions which will shape the future course of your lives. Decisions concerning college, vocation, military, etc., even marriage. We hope and pray that we as educators have given you the necessary tools to make the proper decision for you. We hope that, in choosing your way, you keep your sights high, your goals definite and worthy. However, in your striving, keep in mind the words of Cicero, who said, If you aspire to the highest place, it is no disgrace to stop at the second or even the third. Do not live for the day alone-live and plan for a tomorrow and do not blemish your tomorrow by nearsighted, faint-hearted and morally poor decisions of today. Always keep uppermost in your mind that the good life is worth the striving, that the Creator endowed each of us with certain inalienable rights, but that with these rights go hand-in-hand the tremendous responsibility of taking our proper and peculiar place in His scheme of things, by contributing something to life and to our fellow man so that one can truly say the world is a better place for our having passed through. I hope that all of you take the high road through life. I hope that your lives will be happy and busy ones, that your actions will reflect the education you have received at Bulkeley and at worship, and that during all your days you will walk with your head high with a justifiable pride in your own accomplish- ments and in your contribution to your fellow man in a common striving for the better life.
